They could have avoided this had they explicitly chosen to ban those groups only along with any other questionable group as long as they were transparent and indicated this properly.

Poal has removed all "problematic" posts, AOU routinely removes points (which means users can't post, respond, etc) from accounts he deems to be a problem, which is anybody challenging his bullshit. He personally begged me to come over from Voat. I did for awhile, then I don't know what the fuck happened to him. Mine and many others were put into a "Suspicious Behavior" category. I (correctly) pointed out that the site's rules would naturally devolve as the views of the administration shifted. Free speech would be entirely temporary.
I think the others pretty much covered it. Poal was better than saidit, it allowed discussion of the chosen ones, but it has some fuckery with paid memberships and tremendous butthurt about downvotes. Voat of course was the best, but then it went private and required a log in to even lurk, so I never went back to it. Do note: I never made an account on any of the other sites, including reddit.

Banning pornography is not really comparable to banning political discourse. I don't think the original argument to have it covered by the 1st amendment to the Constitution of these once-united states was particularly strong.
I might be misremembering because I never used Gab but I recall the porn ban was precipitated by loli posters (but I don't recall if it went as far as porn). Lolicons who got banned elsewhere gave Gab a shot, the owner (Torba something) saw it and basically said "fuck that you're outta here" which resulted in the porn ban.
Gab seems to be surviving despite (or because of) it.
