Because it turns from a passion project or hobby into a source of income or "something my name is attached to."
Which means now they want to look respectable and protect their source of money, usually by sanitizing it for ads and journo back pats.
For most Google Adsense is the only viable way to passively generate enough income to run the site, and to use it you need to adhere to Google's content restriction requirements.
I think a lot of people even here don't understand how much of a stranglehold Google has over clearnet.
Pretty much every site and every content creator is heavily incentivized to censor their content, and punished for producing verboten content.
It's why there's such a massively artificial and samey feel to what makes it to the "top" content these days. The creators are glorified actors that don't even realize or care they're reading off a script.
Exactly. The problem is when you sell yourself as "Free speech" principled, but then go back on that to make money.
That's by definition "selling out" and removes the single reason people used your product in the first place, thereby making the ads useless anyway.
This is why Andrew has been promoting Gab's Adsense alternative in his email updates. If there's a viable Adsense alternative, the shackles can come off.
