1997 Denise Richards and Dina Meyer absolutely mog any actress working right now. I'd say both of them are at least 9s.
Clearly there are scores of other reasons any remake is doomed, but that's the most obvious one. In the age of DEI, superhumanly attractive women are extinct.
Starship Troopers the movie wouldn't have reached half of its cult status if not for gratuitous titties spread throughout it, and I won't hear any other opinion. The movie's "endlessly quotable status" being acknowledged almost perfectly coincides with boys who were 9-13 when it came out reaching adulthood and talking about it on the internet using their coincidentally perfect memory of the movie.
Jokes aside, the movie only works because it had the perfect balance of parody to "don't care, awesome" level. So both sides of the camp got what they wanted to pull from it. Verhoeven managed this by accident due to his love of ultra violence mixing with "NAZIS SCARY" politics.
No one in Hollywood has the balls or ability to walk that line, so it'll end up being a shallow Leftie wet dream that uses "REFERENCE TO LINE YOU LIKED" to act like its clever.
It was a brilliant casting job. To roughly paraphrase Red Letter Media, it was an amazing collection of hot-as-shit 20-somethings with soulless, dead eyes.
It works!
The only one who stands out among that is Denise Richards, who put in such a soulless performance that she actually fails to even accomplish the task of not dragging down everything in every scene she is in.
She doesn't get naked, she isn't likeable, she makes everyone around her suffer worse (while she gets off each time), its painful.
Ya but so hot tho
Every other woman in that movie is flashing tit, I don't need to be staring at a robot who can't emote in a full suit.
A hot Robot
I mean, let me count the ways it will fail.
It will fail in the same way the original movie did, by not understanding the source material and understanding the actual message of the source material. (Yes, Starship Troopers has multiple levels of messaging, including a meta level making fun of itself.)
Starship Troopers, at it core, is a book where a guy who has looked his entire life at how cultures work proposes how a culture could work, if we started from a point where he extrapolated we would be when he wrote the book. Heinlein wrote the book in the 1950s, looking ahead to the 21st century, and realizing that the trend line of Western society was headed down.
The reboot movie will fail because Verhoeven, while being an idiot and Dutch and seeing Nazis in everything, could actually write satire.
The original movie didn't fail, come on you ape! It wasn't in line with Heihlein's message, but it was pretty dam entertaining.
I read the book. It wouldn't have made a great movie. The ending alone is too detached and depressing where it leaves Rico. The movie did a really good job of turning that around and making it the propaganda element throughout. Then they gave it a cynical and detached but actually "heroic" ending. It was the right call.
I still love the book but liked the movie.
I disagree. Obviously you couldn't tell the story the same way it is being told in the book but the story itself and it's themes could most definitely make a great movie. Essentially it would just be a serious version of the movie we already have.
The story boils down to Rico's observations during his military service. If they took that seriously, it has a good chance of doing well in the box office. Think along the veins of We Were Soldiers.
With elite soldiers zooming around planets in mech suits shooting nukes from their shoulders instead of cannon fodder charging like the Red Army into the meat grinder.
Yeah. Mr Krabs captured the brainbug.
The movie barely broke-even at the time. Not a fail, but it was considered really out of place in the 90s.
There's a Starship Troopers remake?
I would like to know less.
Maybe the new shower scene will feature Rachel Zeigler's back hair.
50% chance they will add a tranny to the shower scene
Shower scenes to send people running.
The only good remake is a dead remake.
I'm from Buenos Ares, and I say CANCEL THEM ALL!
It will fail because the people now don't understand that the source material was a mockery of a culture to HIGHLIGHT THE BENEFITS OF THE CULTURE. They will only make it a mockery, missing the point.
Restricted citizenship is good. A focus on strength and natalism is good. Defending your homeland from enemies is good.
B-but if we really reach and headcanon a lot, then the bugs logistically couldn't have thrown the meteor across space because something something Einstein, so it was all a false flag and humans were the evil invaders attacking the poor
nigger muslimsorcsbugs that dindu nuffin but sit on their planet before being viciously oppressed. That is the commonly accepted read of that movie by the "media literate" Lefties and its absurd.
We should have invited the Bugs to live with us and mandate that companies need a certain percentage of their workforce to be bugs. Also give the Bugs a bunch of free stuff.
See now, that’s a satire I’d pay to go see. A satire of modern leftist idiocy set in the starship troopers universe.
Every time a bug kills a human, there’d be other humans saying it’s really our fault because we oppress them with our xenophobia, and besides that, humans kill humans all the time too.
Also, replace the propaganda videos with ads featuring bugs married to human women, and Netflix documentaries about how George Washington was actually a bug.
Thered be hentai of bugs raping human women.
... Fuck, are we living in that satire already?
The only abortion made illegal would be killing a chest-burster Alien, because Privilege + Power bugphobia.
That's only because they didn't explain that the bugs make starships by hollowing out asteroids. They didn't "throw" anything, they piloted it.
Ofc is it because they are the ones who push that nonsense in the first place, but they did throw asteroids at earth, so....
Heinlein was about self reliance. He wasn't mocking it to highlight the benefits he was describing how empty they leave the individual even when they are ultimately necessary.
They’re remaking it cause we liked the first one too much
They'll probably pull a Joker 2 and turn it into a musical.
They already did that with 3 and TotallyNotJustinTrudeauInSpace,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YB6Xq-jjzeE
And yes do take note of the DEIversity backup singers that wouldn't make basic training requirements.
And do take note that the guy is a pussy in the movie, not someone others aspire to be (and that's also made obvious in the movie).
And the Marauder team looks like they do pass those requirements.
This is the correct answer.
It will fail because "satire" is a meaningless nonsense word. One that liberals use solely to try and degrade anything they perceive as insufficiently in line with their warped, wrong worldview.
It will fail because rather than being a funny satirical film, it will be a thinly veiled attack on White people who dare to not bend over and let globohomo I mean poor bugs beat them up.
Why is this being remade? The original is practically timeless.
Normal white guys liked it, so it must be destroyed.
There is probably some truth to that. An iconic piece of western culture in general so it must be immolated so they can replace it with their global vision.
Just look at what they did with Joker 2 because the wrong people liked the first one in the wrong way. We've got decades of that kind of spite writing ahead of us even after Trump won.
All the remakes of Verhoeven's classics have failed one way or another, and mostly for exactly the reasons you stated. But, his films were classics chiefly because he helped culminate the 80s in what would become a political talking point throughout the 90s (and eventually lead to Hollywood and video games being neutered) as "ultra-violence".
One of the books they wrote about it had RoboCop as the poster-child for that movement, even though technically that film came at the end of the 80s following a string of other ultra-violent films (and realistically it was the 70s that started the trend, but I digress).
But what was interesting is that Verhoeven was the only one from the 80s to make a film in the late 90s that still carried the ultra-violent edge from the 80s.
McTiernen's Die Hard With A Vengeance was a brilliant 10/10 action film for me, but it was nowhere near as violent as the original two films. So even he neutered a popular franchise to make it a little more palatable for -- at the time -- "modern audiences". Again, it was a great film ,but it had a lot more comedy and levity compared to the first two films, and the squibbing was nowhere near as bloody/gory.
StarShip Troopers stood out amongst the herd because in many ways it was an 80's film with 90's technology: Big boobs, hot babes, handsome lead, and tons of unmitigated violence.
Hollywood's penchant for subversion won't let them leave well enough alone. Rico will be Hispanic (because that's the only way we'll get a handsome lead, but he probably won't be very masculine), and he will inevitably have a black friend (who they might cast as a replacement for Carl), and a gay friend (because of course) (or they will try to kill two birds with one stone, making Carl both black and gay).
Oh, they will definitely cast Idris Elba as Rasczak.
Dizzy will likely be played by Zendaya and they will make her a girlboss. And if they keep Carmen white they will either make her a lesbian or bisexual to cuck Rico from getting with his dream girl. Alternatively, they will make Dizzy white, but kill her off, and then make Carmen Zendaya, so they can keep pushing the interracial nonsense.
That is pretty interesting. The 90s SFX definitely enhances the experience.
I see Pedro Pascal's next role. Lol
Lmao he's too old and too unathletic to pull off half of what Van Dien did on the set.
Wasn't he Filipino in the book? I wish they would just keep the characters in their original gender and ethnicity when they're adapting books.
Indeed. PG13 Robocop and Total Recall. The latter might have got away with it if it had a good story and was well made but the former is about a robotic or cygborg cop blowing away criminals. You can give it a deeper message if you like but on the surface that is what it needs to be.
The Starship Troopers remake/redo will absolutely fail. It will be full of memberberries. It will be quippy like every character is Tony Stark. It will be a thinly veiled reference to Trump. I seriously hope it stays as a rumor and never makes it into production. [EDIT] This is a good post on what to do/not do and how they will screw it up. https://xcancel.com/TheManlet_King/status/1895857870702362987
RoboCop was the worst of the remakes because they actually hired a writer/director who COULD have made a film that was compelling.
Jose Padilha did the Elite Squad trilogy, which is a fantastic series of films that I would rank right up there with the original RoboCop or Godfather. The second film especially is just about perfect -- highly violent, too (also one of the things that stood out to me the most was what happened to some SJW journalists in the film that ran afoul of the local cartel. There was no deus ex machina or woke safe bet to intercede. Film was brutally honest about what really goes on in those situations).
I remember Padilha's production notes that everything he wanted to do, the studio execs shot it down because they wanted to maintain a PG-13 rating.
A real shame, because had they let it be R and let Padilha work his magic, it MIGHT have been decent. Hints of brilliance was on display, especially with the opening and the ED-209's being used to wipe out the terrorists.
As for your assessment -- I fear you're more right than wrong. It will be a "Drumpf bad!" movie with Marvel-tier "comedy".
The Twitter list isn't bad, but I think they're way too optimistic. I also think with the power armour, less is more. It needs to be showcased as an ace up the sleeve rather than a regular part of the armament. I think the animated TV series did a decent job of finding that balance, I think they later got jetpacks? I know in one of the animated films it was cool how they had Rico show up at the end in a decked out power suit. That's definitely how it should be treated, but meh, it's Hollywood... it's best left alone since there's no way they're going to make anything half as entertaining as the 97 film.
I'm just so over remakes. Would be nice if Hollywood could remake some originality.
They can't. The system that created the current Hollywood won't allow it.
Budgets are too big. And most of the people working in Hollywood today lack any life experience.
They're even making a Mobile Suit Gundam movie now. Just started production, don't expect it for at least two years.
It's going to suck hard, unless things turn around very early on in development.
They're out there, but we don't allow them to be seen in public these days.
In the book all the starship pilots are women and they shave their heads bald.
This will be the only 100% true to the book part of it
Starship Troopers was a good fun movie with a great cast.
Accidentally based. Because the director failed at what he intended to do ( ''militarism bad'' ).
A remake would paint the bugs as sentient victims of human / White xenophobia.
I like the format of "It will fail because....."
We should have a weekly it will fail/did fail because post.
The remake will fail because they will make it to meta, making a movie that exists to mostly mock the original movie and it's fans. It will be another Joker 2 with them pointing out how retarded and bigoted the audience was, and making it perfectly clear you liked the wrong stuff.
They arent gonna find a white dude with a masculine jaw to play rico. Theyll assume argentina is all brown and look for a brown actor lol. Even though in the world cup, the argentinian soccer team is more white than most european soccer team lol.
If I had control of Heinlein’s estate I wouldn’t let Hollywood anywhere near it. I love the book and I doubt they will show any respect for the source material
A lot of comments alluded to it, but I'm surprised no one explicitly called out the concept of "fascism" for why this will fail.
The 1997 version is a well-known parody and critique of fascism.
Essentially this remake is doomed from the start because you can't sublimate 50s fash to 90s fash to 2025 fash.
It's was heavily politicized from a left-progressive angle, treated women as superior pilots (relegating men to the front lines as grunts) and had 'unisex' communal showers.
Also, the original book had the entire cast as Filipinos or something, which means they will most likely turn everyone 'brown' (except for the obligatory one white guy that has to suffer through humiliation rituals in order to regarded as human) and claim that it was always the original author's intent.
I'm sure Zendaya will be cast in place of one of them
Tired of this zendaya..
If you were a male of a certain again in the 1990s, just saying “Wild Things” was enough. Denise Richards. I bet she’s dumb as a rock, but man was she hot.
Yeah I'm not looking forward to seeing Zendaya and Ellen Page cast in this movie.
Add in Timothee Chalamet and Rachel Zeigler and you’d have Hollywood’s dream cast.
Blegh.
What roles will Zendaya and Pedro Pascal play in the remake?
