Fuck. Looks like complications of a head injury? What a shame. He's a legend for anime and manga. Not to mention his character designs for the Dragon Quest franchise.
Sand Land, another game that uses his character designs, is coming out next month.
Japan Times reports it was a bloodclot in the brain.
https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2024/03/08/japan/dragon-ball-akira-toriyama-dies/
The article says Dragon Ball's official website says it was a blood clot, but if you check Dragon Ball's official website it only says it was a subdural hematoma, which is bleeding of the brain after a head injury.
Pro wrestler Katsuyori Shibata got exactly this, after delivering a full-force headbutt in a match.
Not only did he almost die, but he didn't wrestle again for five years.
Pretty sure that started life as a manga he wrote.
Subdural Hematomas are impact injuries, so I wonder what exactly it was? Whatever the case, this man has changed the lives of millions of people, and will be missed.
It's possible he fell and hit his head, but assumed he was fine. Might have even tried to sleep it off and died instead.
One of my favorite Japanese singers randomly collapsed during a livestreamed concert shortly after getting vaxxed and hit her head. Died a couple years later due to complications from some hematoma caused by it.
Technically they can occur from other causes that damage or obstruct the blood vessels between the dura and the brain, like tumors, just direct impact is by far the most common cause.
He's just charging his next attack.
He also designed characters for Chrono Trigger.
did a lot of the design work for Dragon Quest too...
And Blue Dragon.
guy could definitely have been forgiven for referring to his penis as his "dragon" lmao
Back in the days of the Chrono Trigger port, I recall wondering why the bonus animated cutscenes looked DBZ-ish.
Oh silly me.
Everyone in Mexico is on suicide watch right now.
Should have collected all the dragon balls before hand
My buddy at work was telling me that cartel activity reduces by a measurable amount whenever a new Dragon Ball product drops. Not sure if true, but I would believe it.
He and Miyamoto have probably done more for Japanese security than anyone else.
Everybody loves Mario and Dragon Ball. Nobody would stand for any attacks on Japan.
It's true. Japan is probably one of the few countries on earth where I'd be ok with the US deploying military forces to defend. Not sure if that should be my stance, but it is.
That kills me, man. What a punch to the gut that is.
Rest in peace, Mr. Toriyama.
It feels like a one-two punch after losing Kentaro Miura just a few years ago. Probably two of the most important men in the whole of media and titans within manga without question.
Rest in peace.
Also losing Yugioh creator Kazuki Takahashi too
The day when Tomino passes away too will be 3rd hit finisher.
If Miyazaki dies next I will be despondent.
i still remember the feeling i had in my gut the day i watched the final episode of dbz.
Prepare for the IP to go woke in about 3 seconds...
Wtf that is terrible. I really connected with my brother over Super. You will be missed based Super Saiyan man.
Wonder how they will dessicrate his corpse? I mean by corpse as in his works and intellectual property/art in the future??
Master roshi will be a feminist? Goku black will literally be black?? Gohan will get cucked??
depends on if shonen jump is dumb enough to license to a western company again.
given dragon ball evolution, I'm gonna guess (hope and pray) they've learned their lesson.
aw hell, one more link just to drive it home how bad this movie sucks
Bank on it 😒👍
Time to call Shenron.
I get the joke, but Shenron can't resurrect someone who died of natural causes, which is what this counts as.
I have Porunga on speed dial.
I was hoping to ask Shenron to find the lost key to the GG time machine instead.
Toriyama might very well have been the most famous Japanese person on the planet. His works were beloved across so many languages and cultures. Damn, this one hurts. What a loss.

Its been a long, Long time since i watched dragon ball stuff
but now after this grim news i'm gonna binge the entire series (from start to finish) in his honor
he left a massive legacy after him so at least his name will be forever rememebred
Or play Chrono Trigger. He designed the characters, and I wouldn't be surprised if he gave pointers for the story too.
Or Dragon Quest
I'll add it to the backlog
currently i'm playing Berserk Boy and its a blast
might as well add the dragon quest series to the pile... man had an impact, just saying...
too bad the original dragon quest games are not on steam, but i suppose i can always emulate them...
...if you're going back to the NES, look for "Dragon Warrior." For some reason, they changed the name when they localized it int he 90s
ah, that makes sense
They’re all excellent and well worth playing, 3,4,5,8, and 11 in particular. Eight might be my favorite Jrpg of all time.
4 and 5 have pretty good NDS remakes, and 3 is supposed to get a remake of its own pretty soon.
It's incredible how big his impact was in the realms of gaming and anime.
I don't think there will ever be another Akira Toriyama.
RIP Mr. Toriyama. Prayers to his family.
His incredible legacy will live on.
I disagree a lot with the man's choices regarding his own work, but that same work is basically the foundation of both my own love of anime and anime/JRPGs as an industry.
All creators wish they could be not only so massively influential, but also so completely without controversy or scandal while doing so.
That was very sudden
Sad, he wasen't even 70.
So in Japanese years it's like dying in your early 30's. /s
Horrible news.
Toriyama created one of the most world acclaimed series of all time.
Truly a sad day.
I literally checked just 2 weeks ago (Feb 25th on my browser history) to see if he was still alive and kicking. We lost a legend and a key figure of my childhood... I going to bed sad now :-(
I remember playing the NES DBZ game Dragon Ball Z II: Gekishin Freeza and I didn't speak or read any Japanese but loved Dragon Ball so much that I trial and error it and ended up pretty far in the game. I'm watching Red vs Blue and some DBZ movies this weekend.
you should try some of the super famicom DBZ fighting games(any SNES emulator should be able to play them, it's basically the same console, less some cosmetic differences). they had their faults, but I think they might be some of the best dbz games of all time
RIP to a man who was basically to Japan what Walt Disney once was.
I just fear for his legacy.
Dragonball never really grabbed me all that much but I respect a leader of the industry who practically saved it back in the day.
RIP Mr. Toriyama. Tell Goku to stop faffing around in the afterlife and get back to his family for us
I like to think he went to chill with King Kai as it should be. RIP, will sorely be missed.
Damn, Requiescat in pace you talented creator.
noooooooooo
There's probably nobody you can give more credit to for making anime and manga popular worldwide.

Rip King:)
Manga artists seems to routinely self destruct by working themselves into an early grave.
Cue the Majin Buu saga outro theme.

i'm feeling real scared about Oda and Murata at this point
