I think it's just better facial capture, and I'll tell you why. The black woman who plays her is that ugly in real life. That's why it looks like she's made of wood, that's why she's so uncanny valley even in the first game. Because they stuck a ginger's color palette on a black woman's face.
Also, for those of you who don't know. Face capture is 1:1. There is no such thing as the technology doing weird stuff to the mesh.
Any and all of the distortions/deformity come from the clean-up crew. The tech only captures exactly what's there.
Here's how photogrammetry works (which is what it's called when someone is photo-scanned into a game):
(EDIT: This video gives you a very quick 3 minute overview of the process from scan to in-engine asset) https://youtu.be/99NO_wzg9Qc
Indie devs oftentimes use photogrammetry/LiDAR to drastically cut down on costs instead of having to manually generate/design models/assets/sculpts.
Big companies also use it for the same purposes as well.
This myth that the tech is screwing up the faces is more bullcrap spread around to mitigate the blame from developers purposely making the women hideous. It's why the male model in Mass Effect Andromeda came out looking like a 1:1 of the real actor and the female model did not. The mesh/modeler team purposely made the female look hideous after scanning in the mesh data.
In reality, the clean-up crew should literally only CLEAN UP and remove excess vertices before sending the model/mesh through the retopology phase. With woke designers this isn't what's happening, instead they're going in and purposely making the females look worse than they do in real life. Widening the jaw, bloating up the cheeks (like in Aloy's case), broadening the forehead, shrinking the eyes, protruding the lips, etc., etc., etc.
Anyone who knows anything about model design knows what they're doing is deliberate.
Wow! I don't know who to blame more, the disgusting SJWs that wish to corrupt beauty, or the idiot consoomers who eat their shit up.
I know it's "just a game" and we shouldn't take it too seriously, but it feels like there's a primitive evil behind the desire to take something pleasant, and warp it into something "bleh". It's like what Tolkien's bad guys would do.
I know it's "just a game" and we shouldn't take it too seriously, but it feels like there's a primitive evil behind the desire to take something pleasant, and warp it into something "bleh". It's like what Tolkien's bad guys would do.
Two things.
It's not just a game. If this happened in a vacuum then you would be totally correct and none of this would matter. It's our ENTIRE Western culture that we're seeing this happen to.
You're absolutely right that this is a primitive evil taking what we enjoy and warping it into something ugly. It's happening across the board in comic books, movies, video games, and streaming content.
You can blatantly see the difference in design/creative philosophy when you compare Western abominations to Japanese, Korean, and even Chinese media, where they still appreciate beauty and continue to produce huge selling products based on that idealistic aesthetic appeal, as evidenced with MiYoho's huge success with Genshin Impact.
A perfect example of this is Remedy Entertainment's Control. It took that game nearly two years to sell 2 million copies across 7 platforms. Remedy considered it a success, though, even though most single-A and double-A companies would consider those abysmal numbers:
https://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2020-12-09-control-has-sold-more-than-2m-units
Compare that to Iron Gate's Valheim, an indie project that has no wokeness, no agendas, no SJW bullcrap. Just a classic Viking survival game, what people wanted from Assassin's Creed: Valhalla but didn't get. How much did it sell? 5 million within three weeks:
https://archive.is/c1NOv
For Western ideologues, it's not about the money, it's about the message.
Virtue has been retconnd to mean someone of good morals, but really it meant someone who followed their code, didn't falter and were seen good because of it. Their intent and moral could actually have been absolutely heinous. But virtue is akin to having a spine, sticking to your guns, your personal moral.
Virtue builds into both beauty and truth, without virtue, you have no compass or desire to improve your attractiveness, maintain it, nor any desire to tell the truth, even if it harms.
All three are also meritocratic. You can rank them, not with absolutes sure but it is obvious when someone is a liar or truth ful, when they're attractive and making effort or slobbing out.
Yep. She looked like she could have been a fun character to play with the original design.
I also thought them including limited use of a flintlock pistol would have been pretty cool, too. But someone on staff was very much against Aloy carrying around guns and they said that they shouldn't include anything reminiscent of Resistance, so they axed her being able to have pistols (even though near the end of the game she can still carry around a heavy machine gun for a limited amount of time).
Honestly I bet if someone tried, they could make an hours long youtube video on all the subtle wokeness of the first game. In my short time playing, I also remember two sidequests, one of which involved a commie-esque character stealing from the rich, and a priest who doesnt want a gay-coded character to enter their order, who you punch in the face. Im willing to bet there was tons more if I had kept playing
The flawed matriarchy and Rost being an amazing mentor and father figure kind of allowed me to shrug off a lot of the other stuff. I think it was really well written for a modern gaming script.
I mean, for one thing the matriarchal tribe she came from was pretty much wrong about everything. Only one of the ruling matriarchs wasn't a frightened, old, curmudgeonly idiot. And the last wasn't exactly smart she was just an old free spirit hippy type.
And the big bad Roman Empire analog turned out to be ruled by a benevolent king and was clearly the most advanced and knowledgeable civilization. I kept expecting them to pull a "Surprise, the western civilization people are actually the big bad imperialists and we should all seek to be more like the noble savage." but it didn't happen.
Yeah, some people did videos breaking it down. There was also a comparison between Horizon and Nier Automata that outlined why one was feminist propaganda and the other wasn't.
I wouldn't call the first game "subtle" in the woke / sjw bullshit - but I still liked the game cause the story was good, specially the setting.
Now that the big mistery is gone, I don't think ill care bout this game. I fully expect then to go full woke now that the setting opened up.
That and the fact the ending rubbed me the wrong way when she is listening to the convo between Gaia ( who is black, of course ) with Sobek and she was like "if you had a boy or a girl, what would you tell her or him" or something like that.
And Sobek made it clear she wanted it to be "HER".
I've been playing zero dawn lately just... because, the gameplay is fun but something about the characters bothers me, i can't quite explain it, they all look so fucking weird.
Yeah I always thought the same thing. I enjoyed the game. The story sometimes. The characters were just weird though.
I might end up trying this sequel eventually since they are putting it on PS4. At my current rate it will probably be 2024 by the time I get to it though.
The only thing I know about this character is that she got dropped into Fortnite riding a mechanical dragon.
I'm guessing it's some Soyny exclusive that nobody here should be in the market for, considering what they've supported lately. Nobody here has a PS5, right?
I've not played it but I understand that it fits in the narrative that everything men make is bad and she literally saves the world from the mistakes of men. I understand that she is also from a matriarchal society.
No idea if it is true or not, I just see the game as bad compared to the Witcher. Better looking world, a lot more interactive, tons of lore and interesting characters and sexy babes. I see no reason to play Horizon over Witcher or even Skyrim for that matter.
To be fair, the matriarchal society she comes from is not portrayed in an idyllic light. Not only is it the most isolationist, socially-backward, and technologically-primitive of all the tribes depicted in the game, but it's also dealt the harshest criticism in-universe, with Aloy expressing the most disdain for it.
Thank you for the great summary. I put a lot of hours into the game but never finished it and the story just seemed so contrived and stupid I stopped caring. The gameplay is really fun though I'm not really sure if it's worth the (woke) price of admission. Luckily I waited and got the complete version for like ten bucks and feel I did get my money's worth from the gameplay and graphics point of view. Because who doesn't like blowing up robot dinosaurs?
The recurring theme of the game is her dumping on the 'superstitious' beliefs of the tribes even though Aloy has literally no more knowledge than they do and no justifiable reason for doubting the supernatural beliefs. She's just portrayed as intrinsically smarter than everyone for no reason.
Maybe because she was raised by a man? If the menfolk have to shoulder the blame for all of the problems in their society, then surely Rost is entitled to some credit for making Aloy into someone a little bit better than the rest.
I'm not saying a true matriarchal society has ever been tried and would turn out just like the backwards bullshit in the game. But having worked in environments with lots of women of a certain type I can see it trending in that direction over time.
I'm playing Biomutant, it's running great on my potato of a computer, and has done a better job of getting me "into" the world than Witcher3 did. It's also serving as a great trainer for that controller I've been meaning to better myself with. The environmental message is firmly stuck in the 70s/80s (the "humans" have simply moved on after making their mess, as apes are wont to do ...)
Yeah, there's some bitching in the forums that you can't select your sex, but these morons don't seem to have noticed that you can't NAME yourself, either. And judging by the way my critter pisses on signposts, I'd say he's definitely a boy.
It's supposed to release on PS4 too. I do still have one of those, so I might play it there eventually. If it's not horrible. I think I bought one game on there in the last year and dropped the online sub. I'm not going to just get rid of stuff I already had to spite Sony.
They have managed make me, a console-first player who was totally going to get a PS5 to not a chance in hell instead. They had already lost my interest with the garbage design, add the fact that their exclusive games are going so woke, well, no thanks.
So did the first game end with them beating all the baddies and entering a time of prosperity? Because that's the kind of face you see on characters in an epilogue after they've gotten a little older and don't need to fight anymore.
NGL, first shot reminds me of Ryan Reynolds, second shot looks like some round-faced fat kid. Guess there must be plenty of food to go around in the post-apocalypse.
How many more units does Horizon sell if the protagonist is allowed to be more attractive? The answer isn't zero. 10%? 20%? At some point, we're talking about potentially tens of millions of dollars deliberately left on the table in service of the progressive war on beauty.
Eh...two stills with no real discerning information between them? I'll withold judgement for now. For all we know this is 'Heavily modded PC' vs. 'Nintendo Switch.' But I'm also less fussed over graphics than the average person.
Not that I'm hopeful about it mind you, but I won't leap to conclusions based off a single snapshot.
I bought the first game for $20 and still felt ripped off.
I will just laugh and laugh at how terrible this game will be just like I laughed at TLOU2 and spent no money on it.
Not for long unless we intervene fast, not if we keep up this complacent "they will never change" mentality while the SJW localizers have their exclusive ear.
I'll give you Bayonetta. Tomb Raider is full of woke cuck bullshit. Metroid has a female character in a game with no dialogue. Nier is made by woke trash. Never heard of the last one.
Ah, back when those were big, I was playing Need for Speed Hot Pursuit and those kinds of games. (It's ironic how my entertainment tastes have regressed back to what they were as a child, avoiding story-based anything because it was boring back then, and now as an attempt to avoid feminism). I only ever played the new ones, which sucked.
Yoko Taro games are anti-woke as fuck. Drakengard 1 is literally "women ruin everything" the game. Every single bad thing in that game goes back to a woman doing horrible shit, and it ends with you literally murdering a giant pregnant statue god (after fighting her giant cannibal babies for a few chapters) by throwing her through time and space so she can't flood the world with her spawn.
Metroid has a female character in a game with no dialogue
If only that were true. Other M was the last original Metroid game and it was chock full of dialogue so bad it literally sunk the franchise.
It was actually an interesting inversion in that the "gamer boys" were the most mad about how they turned her into a weak willed damsel in distress, and the games media/activists loved it for being a cutscene heavy movie game they could actually play for once.
Proving that actual "strong female characters" can be beloved and great times, they just need to actually be made well.
Before that Metroid Fusion had quite a few conversations (nothing like Other M of course) and I thought that was more than enough for a Metroid game. Certainly not "no dialogue".
Yeah Fusion was pushing it but worked because the rest of the game was still solid and the story it was telling was good. Prime 2 I think had the best balance of dialogue when it was used.
Then they fucked it up with Prime 3 and made a game so terrible it needed the Wii Gimmick to save it.
Even then there's exceptions-see Nier:Automata and the new Shantae games. Get indie games involved, and there's plenty more. If they advertise that they have a female lead though, that's always going to be awful.
Yeah, beware of any advertisement that pretty much screams "HEY, WE GOT THIS, LOOKEE!" because it'll give you just a drop of what it was you wanted, and an ocean full of bullshit otherwise. This should be called "Kangaroo Jacking".
You market your best traits, unless you're going for a very "pro-gamer" move that historically rarely works out.
Xenosaga 3 advertises "40 hours of in-game cutscenes!". Which to some isn't a selling point I'm sure, but they're marketing their best feature, a really long, in-depth story. This is a game where most of the heroes are female, including the primary MCs, most of the villains are male. But it doesn't advertise what would be an easy "woke" angle, because what it offers potential buyers is a long, detailed story.
What do you have to offer me as a consumer? "The game has a woman in it." Okay. There's lots of games with women in it. That one over there promises some weird long storyline with in-game cutscenes. What are you promising? "The game... Has a woman... In it." Yes, we get that. What else does it offer? "IT HAS A WOMAN IN IT!"
You put your best foot forward. You advertise your very best, most marketable aspect. Always assume marketing is trying to sell you on the product's most appealing, most desired, most anticipated aspects.
For fun, I looked at the taglines of five games, the ads on their own boxes, just at random (I'll give the games at the end if you want to guess):
"More new dungeons, more improved graphics, still the same great story and gameplay".
"The long-awaited sequel to one of history's greatest adventures. A multitude of playable characters and intertwining storylines. Unique design eliminates random battles and experience points."
"Epic battles, bountiful women, and a cornucopia of debauchery. Woo the ladies, choose a bride, and give birth to the next generation of heroes! Experience over 80 hours of tactical gameplay through 5 generations!" (Hey, it mentions whamen being present! ...But probably not in the way the SJWs would like.)
"Innovative battle system that combined free-roam and turn-based actions. Strategic use of light and darkness that affects players and enemies alike. Deeply moving story combined with mezmerizing music."
"Explore an incredible and unique art-deco world at the bottom of the ocean. Turn everything into a weapon: the environment, your body, fire and water, even your enemies. Biologically modify your body: send fire storming from your fingertips and unleash a swarm of killer hornets hatched from the veins in your arms!"
(Final Fantasy 2 remastered, Chrono Cross, Record of Agarest War, Eternal Sonata, Bioshock)
Not many "We have a whaman!" primary arguments. You advertise your best aspect. If their best aspect is that one gender of one character is pre-selected... That's an awful showing. Most advertise game mechanics. The "theme" of the game. A cool thing to do in the game when you buy it. Or, in FF2's case... "More! ...Without fucking up the existing stuff."
People need to know, I know this is a long wall-of-text, but they need to know that marketing WANTS their product to sell. Not only is it their job, the reason they're in marketing is to help products succeed. So they'll put their best traits forward. Watch closely, and listen, when they tell you that the best trait is merely "women exist". It means nothing of value is in the game, same as if they said "men exist" or "the game features humans."
I think it's just better facial capture, and I'll tell you why. The black woman who plays her is that ugly in real life. That's why it looks like she's made of wood, that's why she's so uncanny valley even in the first game. Because they stuck a ginger's color palette on a black woman's face.
That's not how face capture works.
The clean-up crew purposely made her look hideous.
Here's a comparison picture between Hannah and Aloy: https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5accc51696e76f10e151d123/1551788029054-B7FYSYR2BE88WYUTRQWT/ke17ZwdGBToddI8pDm48kO6t_FIigFZlD-2ukJs68NZ7gQa3H78H3Y0txjaiv_0fDoOvxcdMmMKkDsyUqMSsMWxHk725yiiHCCLfrh8O1z5QPOohDIaIeljMHgDF5CVlOqpeNLcJ80NK65_fV7S1UdQnRCmyfmE32mt8hf8jTbpNOvskeoRv-ygqK_y0NLe3pygZMNSAPtQr-kV0SxGO-A/0E4B36EF-5056-4414-9119-F38ED595B2C1.JPG?format=1500w
Notice how even with a wide jaw Hannah still looks very feminine and does not have that bee-sting look that they gave to Aloy in the game.
They went out of their way to make her look that hideous. Here's how Aloy was supposed to look in the concept art before Ashley Burch came in and suggested they ugly her up: https://i.pinimg.com/originals/48/e5/70/48e570b93ea2fbbef9a6fcf3a2c0cf3b.png

(another video for additional reference) https://youtu.be/1D0EhSi-vvc
If you scan in a fugly model then the model will come out fugly in the mesh, as evidenced here: https://youtu.be/8D40VEyoFxo
Newer tech now uses LiDAR, which is what a lot of devs now use to very quickly and easily generate content and assets: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=exeagQ4g3-I

She does look plumped up to be certain
The Twinkies survived
lol, can't unsee it

woke up this mornin’... got some gabagool
Going over how they managed to make an ugly character even uglier but how come she is not black? Since when are they allowing a ginger in a sequel?
Also calling it now, she identifies as some made up new age word.
Realism strikes again.
The fatty graphic designer working on the project couldn't let a 3D character upstage her.
These people want to destroy anything and everything that is beautiful. That is why they promote ugliness in all things.

Eww, omg.
Looks like a female version of Zippy the Pinhead.
Now that reference is a fucking blast from the past.

Why are tranny men replacing women even in games?
Looks like Jerry O’Conell character in « Stand By Me ».

Games should implement a simple attractiveness slider to keep everybody happy.

I bought the first game for $20 and still felt ripped off. I will just laugh and laugh at how terrible this game will be just like I laughed at TLOU2 and spent no money on it.
Female protagonist = always bad.
Have you never played any good games with female protagonists like Tomb Raider, Metroid, Bayonetta, Nier Automata or Tales of Berseria?
...Portal, Final Fantasy VI/X, Mirror's Edge, Atelier series, Castlevania:Order of Ecclessia, Cooking Mama, Mischief Makers, Shantae...
Now that takes me back. God that game was such a hidden gem.
Fair enough, and Metroid is my favorite series, but can you name anything from the last decade?
Bayonetta, Nier Automata and Tales of Berseria are all from the last decade.
They are all Japanese games which is why they have been able to avoid the woke cancer sweeping the West.
Not for long unless we intervene fast, not if we keep up this complacent "they will never change" mentality while the SJW localizers have their exclusive ear.
The man who wrote that guide for Japanese artists is a hero.
I'll give you Bayonetta. Tomb Raider is full of woke cuck bullshit. Metroid has a female character in a game with no dialogue. Nier is made by woke trash. Never heard of the last one.
I was talking about the earlier Tomb Raider games not the latest two games which are cucked.
Nier Automata was made by based Yoko Taro. How is he woke trash?
Tales of Berseria is a fun action jrpg with a good story.
I saw their Twitter on IWD.
That garbage IWD tweet is from the virtue signalling marketing team of the western branch of Square Enix. They are not the ones making the game.
The original Japanese devs and the team making the Nier games are not woke.
I mean, they're the ones profiting off it, which is bad enough.
I'll assume you're right here, but it's still a black mark against the franchise.
That is the way to do it. When has women talking ever not made anything worse?
But at that point it's just a palette swap. It doesn't really count.
Not in the early days. They knew how to do it without injecting bullshit in your face politics.
Sorry but that's total bullshit, what you mean is female protagonist after 2014.
I understood that reference.
