The AI is less shit at it's job then you, THAT'S why it was researched, developed for millions and over years.

You had PLENTY of time knock that shit off and just do your job that it wouldn't be required so says a lot about you that your instinct when you're on the train tracks with an approaching train miles away is not to simply get off the tracks and walk a safe distance away but to run EVEN faster towards the train..

It's so pathetic. Literally no one would mind if translations were accurate. My Japanese is not yet good enough to just watch stuff without subs or play Japanese games without a translation but at least my knowledge is good enough to be aware of this retardation. Fuck off with localisers, I cannot wait until they are all out of a job.

I only understand some words and greeting / goodbye phrases and it pisses me off when the translators reinterpreted and wrote something different because they felt their idea fit the context better for Californian English speakers.

This is someone else's work you're translating. I don't want to read your lines, I want to read the original author's line translated acurately. I am watching this cartoon from Japan and Japanese culture is part of why it's interesting.

After they do it so many times, it becomes obvious SJW translators have a problem with female characters being modest / apologetic, because they keep changing ''sumimasen'' to something totally different.

I am an old dinosaur. The subtitles I was raised on kept all honorifics. They kept all cultural references, and put a little note across the top of the screen in tinier subtitle font explaining it. They sometimes even just explained a pun or a wordplay with a translator note. That is how I know hana can mean flower or nose, kitte can be stamp or cut.

And sometimes, yes, the translation said "All According To Keikaku (TL note: Keikaku means Plan)". Which is dumb and was memed on. But hey, learned a new word, and didn't lose the meaning of the story.

Nowadays, you get the lolcowlizers subtitling in "hey sissy" for "Ohaiyo gozaimasu, Onee-sama".

I miss the acurate translations with notes explaining the cultural stuff a non-Japanese wouldn't get. :(

That pisses me of the most. Honorific are important, while you can translate Tanaka-san as Mr Tanaka it gets more complicated with other honorifics and should just be kept as is.

Damn, they don't do that any more? I watched anime from the very late 90s to the mid-2000s. Most of it was crap VHS or VHS quality video, but I remember many shows that had those types of subs. There wasn't particularly a debate, that was clearly the best and most popular style. Fansubs were clearly the way to go. There WAS a debate over subs vs dubs, but that was basically just geeks vs normies.

they keep changing ''sumimasen'' to something totally different

In fairness, it can mean 'thanks' as well as the more common usage of 'excuse me' and 'sorry'. Somebody using the polite form is probably attempting to convey a more apologetic meaning, but it's not out of the question.

From my limited experience, Japanese was heavy on context (both in terms of events and social standings).

You can just say eat and in context it can mean something. That's what I love about the language. Context is very much important in Japanese and why I think AI while I would appreciate it will still not be perfect in translating. We'll have to wait and see.

I know little from how AI works, but I would assume if you feed it more data, it'll get closer to what the actual translation should be. I mean, the XSEED translations in Falcom games alone likely provide copious amounts of reference material.

It's the other way around. Japanese tend to have a specific word for a specific stuff, contexts are easier to understand. It's still a tough language for AI though because weeb media tend to have a lot of slangs and made-up words. Hadoken literally means wave fist but hadoken should be hadoken.

They would have a super cushy job if they just TRANLATED and not inserted their own ideas into it. It is as usual the commies trying to be dumb about it. Ever since I saw what they did with one of the fire emblem games(I think it was awakening or the one after) and noticed it in anime subs I've tried to learn Japanese so I am no longer reliant in those fuckers. Hopefully AI will improve upon this so everyone can enjoy games, anime or manga in a way that doesn't change it into some woke nonsense.

Awakening was the last one they didn't fuck with. Apparently the series was in a rough spot, but Awakening was an unexpected success, reinvigorating it.

Unfortunately, part of that was due to the shipping mechanics which irreversibly altered the target demographic of the series.

This was followed up by Fates which had a weaker script even in Japanese, and was fucked with heavily by localizes. No game In the franchise has made it to the west unmolested since.

Then it was fates I remember them destroying with their woke shit. What about the latest? Was that one also fucked with? I wanted to get back into the series a bit.

As I said all game since Fates, which came out in 2016, have been heavily altered in localization, and even in the Japanese versions, much of the core identity of the series has changed to be more centered on character relationships and shipping, with the strategy game taking more of a back seat.

Shadows of Valentina probably was the least adulterated, as it was a remake of an older game, but even it had a lot of easy mode mechanics added. Honestly, your best bet is to go play the old GBA games and fan hacks.

As for the latest entry, Fire Emblem Engage, I haven't played it, but from what I've heard the strategy game part is pretty good, but the writing is the least interesting it's been in a very long time, and many of the S Rank supports were altered in localization so that everyone is just really good friends, a guy who ships girls had his personality watered down to being a "people watcher", and many references to feminity were stripped out.

So again, it's a Fates situation, where a weak Japanese script is damaged further by a meddling translation, as opposed to Awakening where changes to the script are almost all in service of giving the characters distinct "voices", building a tone for the game, and giving flavor to the game.

You might say this is hypocritical to forgive the changes to Awakening, but not Fates or Engage, but the difference is that Awakening was done in good faith as far as I can tell, and far more gently. There's a difference between giving Chrom's Mercenaries the name " The Shepards" in English, and changing a character's whole personality to being obsessed with pickles, or removing entire conversations for a joke, or removing anything hinting at a relationship because heaven forbid seventeen year olds have any sort of sex drive.

Was the writing for Three Houses really affected? I got the impression that it was mostly loyal to the base material.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 2 ▼
– Eltrion 2 points 2 years ago +2 / -0

Three houses is the one I know least about. I didn't hear too much about it other than that it was well recieved, so it probably wasn't as bad as Fates. Maybe someone else knows the details.

My basic understanding is that there were enough strange changes that didn't add anything to the character to annoy a few diehards, but not enough to go viral like Fates. Many were again around references to anyone's (man or woman) femininity.

▲ 2 ▼
– -Fender- 2 points 2 years ago +2 / -0

I don't know if it was changed from the original, but playing it, there were a few support dialogues that made me raise my eyebrows. The characters Dorothea and Mercedes, who are commoners, would criticize the beliefs of another character called Lorenz, for his beliefs about his role and responsibilities as a noble. The specific way they'd argue against him seemed utterly strange to me; as if someone from the modern day had transplanted their beliefs in the girls' minds about right and wrong, as if they hadn't grown up their entire lives in a feudal society. I haven't heard about this being a case of localization, but maybe it was, because those two conversations just seemed out of place, somehow, in that universe.

But otherwise, I didn't really notice anything blatant, when I was playing the game.

As someone who used yahoo's babel fish to translate japanese and chinese back in the day, guess what? humans can understand context. Which I understand why that might be confusing to liberals who needs people they agree with to contextualize everything in their twisted and distorted point of view (see: everything Trump says gets "translated" to be much worse than what it actually means)

I digress, even with now considered ancient translators I understood what was going on in those mangas. So take your agenda and go wait in the uber line at the airport and finally do something useful and contribute to society for a living.

It actually would be somewhat feasible I think to set up a utility to do that as you watch something. Might require a plugin or 3rd party tool to streamline the process though.

The idea being that it could do that for whatever you're watching ahead of time, so long as it had access to the original Japanese captions.

Audio/voice localization might take a little more doing though, but we're not too far off from making that doable. Could maybe even generate vocalizations based on the original Japanese voice actors (I know that's already a thing, regardless of language barriers, but I don't know if it's quite fast enough for the scenario we're talking about here).

We already have tools that can read Japanese text and translate it from the screen, even open source. If you're interested I can look it up, I don't remember the name sadly. Those same tools could probably be reused with AI for better translation.

All you had to do was translate the text to the best of your ability, and you couldn't do that. You had to inject yourself and your politics into it, and now you don't have a job.

I'd point out whose fault that is, but you'd cry more.

So, it's your fault. Cry more. :)

This decision is a giant slap in the face to every translator who spends countless hours pouring over their work to ensure quality and accuracy.

Bzzt, nope, the verb is 'pore over' not 'pour over'. Your suggestion is interesting too, but the fact that the slap in the face is figurative probably means it's fine to say that it can be directed 'to' someone.

They didn't define "quality", which is a noun that decrees an adjective is present? The missing comma about halfway through? The oxford comma opportunity? The fact the sentence is incorrect on the surface level by making an assumption that any translator does those actions?

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 3 ▼
– ZeroPercentCamoIndex 3 points 2 years ago +3 / -0

It's just the fact that she doesn't know the difference between 'pouring' vs 'poring' over something, yet puts herself forward as someone who has anything to say about 'quality and accuracy'. If this is the standard they get to after countless hours of work, then their industry deserves to collapse, and that's before even factoring in the ideological activism side of things.
