Just take those old records off the shelf

I'll sit and listen to 'em by myself

Today's music ain't got the same soul

I like that old time rock 'n' roll

There is good new music being made, it's just modern pop music that's gone to hell.

What the fuck ? You know how many actual pop artists existed in the 80s ? Just because 1 happened to be good doesn't mean there isn't a whole mountain of trash.

Are your logical skills this fucking bad ?

I like some of the rock bands coming out of Japan these days, but it's very niche and sometimes leans on gimmicks (i.e. Band-Maid) so I don't always feel comfortable recommending it to everyone. Great music though.

I think Covid and the subsequent lockdowns radically changed the way people look at popular media, at least in the short term.

Quite a few people (particularly young people) wanted to be in the know about the latest songs, movies, and TV shows so they could discuss it with their co-workers or classmates before. Separated from that environment, there's probably more people enjoying media simply because they like it.

Plus more people working from home and thus being able to listen to music while working could be skewing the demographics older and therefore toward old music.

When you are not forced to listen to that shit everywhere be it on the radio, the mall, waiting room of the doctor, etc. you don't become as malliable to modern music. They work by burying into your head so you think you like this inferior music. Not being showered with it all day makes you less likely to seek it out yourself.

I recently did the test myself: I checked out current music in the charts and I could not find one I liked, I went down to top 50, gave it a fair chance but nothing was catching me. I had to cleanse myself with some Enigma right after.

Mind you, there is still great music made. I hate the notion of saying all modern music is shit.. But popular music is all 99% of the time shit. If you want great music still being made nowadays look at games, indie bands, non chart music, different genres. You can find some absolute gems and no, not only metal as some might point out.

Unfortunately I feel like this statistic is simply pop culture still being pop culture. The movies Elvis, Rocketman, Queen (or whatever that one was named), the show Stranger Things, all feature older music. And let's face it that music was all pretty dang good. So I think its why this era of music is growing, and today's music generally speaking sucks. Though I do think your third paragraph also contributes.

When you think that life, following the biological imperative, is all about mating, you get that pretty much 100% of people's lives revolve around attracting someone else, which means being Basic is the best way to achieve that goal.

Probably a good 80%+. Genetics obviously have some influences, the deaf obviously would have different preferences, but upbringing will define most of your musical taste, and upbringing is based on parents following the crowd, and the rest of your preferences are likely marketed, either directly, or word-of-mouth.

One of the benefits of being so irony-poisoned from a young age that I never got into mainstream music to begin with is that I don't feel like I'm old and out of touch when I hear new "artists" and they sound like someone is pressing a turd directly against my eardrum.

"old" being 18 months or older.

So let's see, 300M old (meaning anything and everything up to 2020), vs 130M new.

New is still winning by a big margin seeing how the back catalog from god knows when albums started being made in the early 1900s, vs 18 months of music.

Also, since they don't break down the "old" by decade, who knows what people are listening to. It might be some Led Zep, early Queen, or it could be recycled shit like Beyonce's latest album from 2018. Heck, Billie Eilish has a bunch of stuff that fits into that "Old" category.

That's why I hate percentages.

It doesn't hurt me Do you want to feel how it feels? Do you want to know, know that it doesn't hurt me? Do you want to hear about the deal that I'm making? Yooouuuuuuuu

LMAO! When nothing of any originality is being produced by most modern record companies, of course people aren't going to buy their shit. A taste for new works still exists, but they want new flavors, not a computer generated pile of half-frozen mashed shit potatoes. Personally, I like retrowave, classic feel, new taste.

Side note, I hate almost all modern streaming shows. I started watching something on Amazon set in 19th century England and quickly see lots of minorities. This is dumb and I'm not going to watch that so I shut it off and watched a movie from 1979. Woke culture must die.

95% of [current year] music is obnoxious AI autotuned crap.

Someone should have a show where these "artists" are called out and have to show up. Then they'll have to use standard instruments and mics they can't plug into anything but an amplifier (if that).

I predict most of them will be hilarious train wrecks.
