I think Covid and the subsequent lockdowns radically changed the way people look at popular media, at least in the short term.
Quite a few people (particularly young people) wanted to be in the know about the latest songs, movies, and TV shows so they could discuss it with their co-workers or classmates before. Separated from that environment, there's probably more people enjoying media simply because they like it.
Plus more people working from home and thus being able to listen to music while working could be skewing the demographics older and therefore toward old music.
When you are not forced to listen to that shit everywhere be it on the radio, the mall, waiting room of the doctor, etc. you don't become as malliable to modern music. They work by burying into your head so you think you like this inferior music. Not being showered with it all day makes you less likely to seek it out yourself.
I recently did the test myself: I checked out current music in the charts and I could not find one I liked, I went down to top 50, gave it a fair chance but nothing was catching me. I had to cleanse myself with some Enigma right after.
Mind you, there is still great music made. I hate the notion of saying all modern music is shit.. But popular music is all 99% of the time shit. If you want great music still being made nowadays look at games, indie bands, non chart music, different genres. You can find some absolute gems and no, not only metal as some might point out.
Unfortunately I feel like this statistic is simply pop culture still being pop culture. The movies Elvis, Rocketman, Queen (or whatever that one was named), the show Stranger Things, all feature older music. And let's face it that music was all pretty dang good. So I think its why this era of music is growing, and today's music generally speaking sucks. Though I do think your third paragraph also contributes.
When you think that life, following the biological imperative, is all about mating, you get that pretty much 100% of people's lives revolve around attracting someone else, which means being Basic is the best way to achieve that goal.
Probably a good 80%+. Genetics obviously have some influences, the deaf obviously would have different preferences, but upbringing will define most of your musical taste, and upbringing is based on parents following the crowd, and the rest of your preferences are likely marketed, either directly, or word-of-mouth.
