Exactly what I expect "adapted for modern audience" to look like

"adapted to appeal to my fragile ego that 99% of our customers don't want to see"

They somehow haven't ruined enough IPs for game studios to figure out that this is how you get bought by Tencent

permalink save report block reply
▲ 38 ▼
– ThreeLights 38 points 1 year ago +38 / -0

That’s the point for the upper executives: Lower the cost for another company to buy, new company gives the executives bonuses and golden parachutes after being bought out, then the executives are pushed gently out with said parachutes.

The issue is the companies have become radioactive without some good will or good products. You can have all the IPs in the world but burning the bridges while it’s being sold just doesn’t work out.

I figured there had to be some kind of powerful upper level incentive for it to continue the way it has, but I never would have guessed it was an executive exit strategy.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 12 ▼
– ThreeLights 12 points 1 year ago +12 / -0

It’s worst than that: It’s the only strategy to all of them. These executives will leave one company and leech to another one to rinse and repeat. This is why you either work small (or yourself) or have no respect to any big corpo. Use them because the higher ups are using it too.

They really are just parasites.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 9 ▼
– CarmenOfSandiego 9 points 1 year ago +9 / -0

Technically that makes them parasitoids which have the intent to kill the host. Most parasites don't want to do that depending on which host they are in since it also keeps them alive.

Plenty out there that swap between the roles until hitting the definite host, however.

This should be the assumed default for any modern game.

It's why I'm enjoying saving my money and replaying classics and discovering great games I hadn't played yet.

Between emulators, backlog, and abandonware, I'll never come close to running out of games

There are a few exceptions.

I'll eventually get Tony hawk 3+4 when it's on sale for five bucks for instance.

Same with doom dark ages.

But the days of buying new releases within even the first year or two are basically over.

There's a few things that could make me break that rule.

  1. A neverending story video game

  2. The Max Payne trilogy remake if it actually looks like they don't screw it up

  3. A non-woke fallout 3 remake

  4. A non woke remake of shadows of the empire.

  5. A handful of other remakes of all time favorites

Yeah I wouldn't mind trying the Doom game once I've proved it's not Eternal. I hated Eternal. It also needs to be a lot cheaper. There's no reason for me to bite at over $20.

– current_horror 6 points 1 year ago +6 / -0

I recently bounced off Eternal for the third and probably final time. I just fucking hate that game. UI and color scheme are piss ugly. Nonstop interruptions to gameplay so they can tutorialize you on whatever new busywork mechanic they’re about to shove down your throat. Enemies exploding into neon ammo/health/armor pickups, taking you completely out of the game. Constant awkward platforming. Rigid precise strategies for killing every goddamn enemy, plus comically low max ammo, forcing you to switch weapons every 2-3 seconds. Eternal is a neon UI ADHD nightmare that feels like a goddamn job. 2016 is waaay better.

You've pretty much described everything I hate about it. I just so rarely had fun. I haven't tried again because when I did play it was when I had game pass, so I guess game pass saved me from paying for that garbage. I'm going to replay 2016 soon, I think for the third or fourth time. Love that game.

I've been running through 2016 for the second time and it's just as good as I remember. I just wish the fucking map wasn't so ass and I didn't get lost so much.

Just follow the green lights. That was some brilliantly understated game design in my opinion. It was enough to guide the player without beating them over the head with a giant flashing quest marker.

Doom DA is fun, imo. I get that it's overpriced but it's one of those franchises I have enjoyed forever and I'm not seeing a lot of wokeness or anything.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 3 ▼
– cccpneveragain 3 points 1 year ago +3 / -0

So you've played it? Is it full of platforming? My understanding is it was not. I've played Doom since it was brand new and simplicity of controls was just something I liked. It was never before that a complicated game.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 2 ▼
– rebuildingMyself 2 points 1 year ago +2 / -0

Not as much platforming as the previous ones, no. Still full of secrets that require some exploration to figure out. The fights are fun, and I highly suggest you bump up difficulty to ultra violence at least when you can as anything below that you're steamrolling

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 2 ▼
– MargarineMongoose 2 points 1 year ago +2 / -0

Steamrolling stuff was kind of the appeal of Doom 2016 for me. I liked feeling like Doom Guy was a veritable force of nature. Doom Eternal took that joy and shit all over it in a way that I'll never forgive them for.

If they couldn’t handle Eternal then Dark Ages on UV will eat them alive.

Have you fiddled with game speed at all? A lot of people recommend jacking it up to 150%, but I question whether or not they’re just Eternal junkies.

Why seek out a FO3 remake when you can just mod FO3 into a high-def remake?

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 2 ▼
– GoldenInnosStatue 2 points 1 year ago +2 / -0

Yep... get wabbajack

go to fallout new vegas, and install Tale of Two Wastelands (a mod that sandwiches both fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas into a single game)

then install a massive modpack like Wild card (which is like 800 mods) and enjoy the absolute best of Fallout can offer

i've already dumped like 200 hours on it, and additional 60 hours on DLC sized mods like the Frontier and Dry Wells

there is so much PREMIUM content to enjoy made by modders its insane why people even bother with Bugthesda and their craptastic gaymes

But the days of buying new releases within even the first year or two are basically over.

Especially now that we're seeing post-release woke-ification patches.

Or KCD2/Vavra turning his back on his supporters.

There will be mods to make the characters not ugly and woke, and they’ll be banned and ridiculed for giving players what they want. Never thought Elder Scrolls would be burned down by Karens, but here we are. They even look disgusting.

Same producer as Starfield. How has that game come along, the creation kit came out a year ago. Have modders made it playable, or is it still an empty mess filled with dysgenic potato people?

Last I checked, not even modders were trying to save that mess of a game.

When even modders check out, you know you've managed to pull a right clusterfuck.

I think the truly skilled modders are starting to realize that they can “monetize their talents” by using them to create their own games. The last few years, we’ve seen dev teams of 1 to 30 people outselling the biggest studios in the industry. Why bust your ass to fix woke trash Starfield when you can spend all that time rolling the dice on your own project and potentially become a millionaire?

Apparently it's got quite a few paid mods now. I saw one that was supposed to have mecha as an enemy (there's a whole retarded thing about that in the vanilla game). Naturally, it was just a massively scaled up robot character who bounced around like a balloon animal when it died.

At a certain BMI, your biological sex no longer really matters. You are just equally useless and unfuckable as every other ham planet. It’s kinda like how women lose a ton of their inherent value when they become elderly.

I just assumed that there would never be one ever again. Ever since they decided that an MMO was the future of single-player RPG's.

Elder Scrolls 6 is basically the next version of Duke Nukem Forever, or Half-Life 3.
