I recently bounced off Eternal for the third and probably final time. I just fucking hate that game. UI and color scheme are piss ugly. Nonstop interruptions to gameplay so they can tutorialize you on whatever new busywork mechanic they’re about to shove down your throat. Enemies exploding into neon ammo/health/armor pickups, taking you completely out of the game. Constant awkward platforming. Rigid precise strategies for killing every goddamn enemy, plus comically low max ammo, forcing you to switch weapons every 2-3 seconds. Eternal is a neon UI ADHD nightmare that feels like a goddamn job. 2016 is waaay better.
You've pretty much described everything I hate about it. I just so rarely had fun. I haven't tried again because when I did play it was when I had game pass, so I guess game pass saved me from paying for that garbage. I'm going to replay 2016 soon, I think for the third or fourth time. Love that game.
I've been running through 2016 for the second time and it's just as good as I remember. I just wish the fucking map wasn't so ass and I didn't get lost so much.
Just follow the green lights. That was some brilliantly understated game design in my opinion. It was enough to guide the player without beating them over the head with a giant flashing quest marker.

I have nothing to add other than my visceral agreement and application to join the angry mob when it comes time to get out the pitchforks and torches.
