I miss when it was fun....
I used to find it pretty fun. They had some charismatic runners and it just had a fun, laid back atmosphere with some moments of glory.
Now it feels like a bunch of sad, angry pedophiles sitting in a room playing video games and barely talking because their obvious man voices clock them instantly. And it feels like that because it is.
That applies to speedrunners in general really. Most of them got their start as comfy background noise.
Now its "mods MODS do your job!" constantly, while the obvious man voice has his pronouns and new name plastered all over the UI and the chat spams whatever Gay Emote that particular streamer has.
I remember seeing the clip of the woman who just went of on a rant because no one was paying attention to her, good times.

Even when I've been in liberal areas of Texas, masks are not the norm and when it comes to my own friend group I think 100% of them even extended friend-of-friend types have disregarded Covid entirely for all of 2022. Is Cali, NYC, or whatever still doing all this stuff?
I admit to watching some speed runs ages ago, when it was a new thing. I found it interesting how some players played a game so much that they knew every area and did them in the optimal sequence. Then it started doing exploits that was basically cheating and I no longer cared, this was before going overboard with the gay and trans stuff.
Don't get me wrong, doing a speed run in itself is stupid. Why would you not enjoy the game instead of rushing thru it? Makes little sense but it was fun to watch the skill on some players.
Depends on the run, like you said. It looks cool to see someone play the game as intended as quickly and smoothly as possible. Once they start excessively glitching and skipping as much of the game as they can, it sucks all the fun out of it.
A bit of glitches here and there can be fun too. BLJ in SM64 is iconic. But once the run becomes more glitch than gameplay, you're left wondering what the point was.
Terrible analogy. Racing is filled with rules that define the parameters of the competition, ensuring that the players engage correctly with the game. Modern glitch speed running is like throwing it in reverse so you can then drive ten feet, technically cross the finish line, and declare yourself the winner.
If you think even the most glitched speedrun isn't filled with the most draconic beaucratic nonsense rules to "count" among the various "official boards" then you are mistaken.
Racing doesn't have shit on literal frame by frame pixel hunting to find splices or possible TAS involvement.

I enjoy watching speedruns just because of the enhanced levels of skill & autism it takes to squeeze every last second out. There are a lot of games that I can't imagine wanting to speedrun, but platformers like SMW and Metroid are really good candidates. It's really not a lot different than watching Superplay vids of Cave shooters.
I was watching a Mike Tyson's Punch Out video yesterday that went over every possible permutation of every fight and the odds of having a 'perfect' run that rivaled the best TAS run were something like one in a septillion because of the high levels of RNG in the game. Some of the strats they use to shave time and avoid bad RNG are really smart but wouldn't be optimal outside of a speedrun.
Then again, I'm the guy that will watch Ullillilia play Bubsy for four hours.
In California, I still see some teachers wear masks, especially young, fresh out of college substitutes. The only students and teachers that still wear masks seem to all be asian, although the majority of asians don't mask, but it still is an obvious correlation.
Similarly, when I see people walking in the morning some still wear masks, again mostly asian, but overall almost no adults going about their day wear masks except for the early 20's and asians.
What's with asians and masks? Where I am, if you see someone with a mask 90% of the time is an asian.

I remembered during one early GFQ there was an article out about the “Top Ten Female Speedrunners Shaking Up GDQ” or something like that. I made a bet with myself before reading the article that all ten of them would be trannies but I had grossly overestimated, it was only nine of them.
