It was absolutely not like this when I lived there in '99 (for obvious reasons.) The Japanese were some of the most welcoming people I've ever met in my life, and as long as you tried to meet them halfway they'd generally do just about anything to help you.

That having been said, I absolutely under no circumstances want them to dilute their population. The reason everything just works there (yes it's not perfect) is because it's highly homogenous and as a result, they have an incredibly high trust society. Letting in numbers of foreigners that have zero interest in being respectful of their culture will be an absolute travesty.

It's depressing. My kids' HS has a D&D club too. Neither of my kids are involved right now due to schedules, but I did manage to reach out to Black Blade and they donated THIRTY FIVE POUNDS of OSRIC books, as well as a box full of Castles & Crusades books from Troll Lord. This in addition to the 50 or so books I donated from my personal collection. WotC donated a grand total of one starter box, 6 months after the request was made.

I'm trying. I'd like to spend a little of my time running a high quality classic style game for them, but right now I absolutely can't fit it in. Hopefully the kids are intrigued by the older materials and rebel against Modern D&D. Right now it seems like their biggest problem is getting kids to run games, since it can be overwhelming for a first timer, especially for kids that have bad expectations set by things like CR.

Yes, back when I was younger, we didn't have any women in our group, and it wasn't because we didn't try. They refused to be seen with us nerds. We weren't even picky about who we gamed with, it was enough to be interested in playing the game, and we always needed new players so unless you were completely unbearable to be around, you were in.

I blame the downward trajectory of Vampire the Masquerade for this

It was always possible but the WotC era, and specifically the 5e era has been about telling a story rather than playing a game. It's almost become more about playing pre-written campaigns with a defined start and end, with character arcs, etc.

D&D has become a lifestyle product rather than a game. There was a guy bagging my groceries with a rainbow d20 tat on, so I foolishly asked him how long he'd been playing for, since I've been playing since I was 8 in 1986. He told me he had never played before, he just really liked Critical Role.

edit: to be fair, it's always been done by people trying to force D&D to do things it's not designed to do rather than play a game specifically intended for that sort of playstyle, it's just far more over about telling you that you're Playing Wrong

Don't worry, the current crowd hate Gygax. Even the Reddit OSR crowd hates Gygax.

Guess we should delete all of those UCB episodes then

Those are for their adventure modules, their HC books all get printed by American commercial printers (usually in Missouri, close to them, iirc.)

Their last five Kickstarters have done just about $1m, the Gygax one alone did $600k

This is the company that is publishing the rest of Gygax's stuff. They're good dudes, probably conservative, but none of it seeps into their products and they're not political at all publicly.

Good dudes that deserve your money if tabletop is a thing you're into.

As a former weeb, I actually have a BA in Asian Studie because my school didn’t have a major in Japanese.

When I got my degree the coursework was decidedly non-cucked, being language/geopolitics/cultural/study abroad. That was 25 years ago, it’s probably less so today.

It's not even canon, just some L. Frank Baum fanfic

in terms of readership though, it's probably much bigger than Kotaku but then again, Taibbi hasn't been writing for them for a decade
