Wake up, babe. New stats just dropped.

"Despite being 1% of output, manga accounts for 66% of sales."

permalink save report block reply
▲ 5 ▼
– 2016TrumpMAGA 5 points 1 year ago +5 / -0

That is not possible. If it is 66% of your sales, it is 66% of your output. Unless you've got millions of non-manga sitting around in boxes unsold.

▲ 19 ▼
– Guyven 19 points 1 year ago +19 / -0

'Copies of books' is not what is meant by 'output.' That is what is meant by 'sales.'

Example:

99 books with 1 copy ordered, 1 book with 198 copies ordered

-> 1% of output is 66% of sales.

edit: corrected math, it's actually a crazier ratio than I thought at first.

There is a big disconnect between value and what can be monetized. R&D, for example, represents output but is not monetized. It could be. Comics can be a lot like that. Throw a lot of stuff out there and see what sticks.

Or it can just be propaganda.

The use of AAVE to sound hard is always so cringe, you know the people saying this shit are either baizuo retards or middle-class negroids who are insecure about never having grown up in da hood.

Yes.

It's an evolution of the idea that black-centric grammatical mistakes collectively represent a language rather than a dialect.

Call me old fashioned but wouldn’t it be more appropriate to just correct bad grammar? I mean I get people speak to their friends a certain way but I’d say those young people should learn how to speak in a professional setting

Correct. It has never been in common use. Acronyms only serve to obfuscate information and should not be used unless it is a term that is in common use.

Smith1980 didn't seem to know the term either and he doesn't sound that old from his discussions here. I've barely heard it used outside of academia and KiA-adjacent forums, primarily referring to journalist papers. So one would assume it's easily recognizable to people wasting their time reading the drivel of neomarxists.

Maybe it was known with some of GenX but never passed on, because I have rarely seen anybody my age or younger use the term.

Manga effortlessly crushes the entirety of the western comics industry because they have stories to tell and are accessible, both as a medium and in the sense that you can just waltz into a book store in the mall and pick up volume 1 of a title that interests you.

The western comicbook fanboys simply don't want to hear that their decades long incestuously interconnected universes are impenetrable labyrinths hidden away in specialty shops that no one visits other than people who are already invested, but it's true. The western comic book industry needs to seriously re-evaluate what the fuck they're doing with themselves if they want to survive or flourish. It's mismanaged from top to bottom and the fact the DC and Marvel are the face of the industry is keeping it locked in irrelevance. The proliferation of webcomics in the early 2000s showed us that western audiences still have an appetite for western comics, just not what the industry keeps churning out.

You know what the sad thing is? They'll convince themselves that it's because they're not going woke hard enough. It's not that their writing is garbage. It's not that they can't create anything original that works. It's clearly because "straight white boys" don't sell. Ignore the fact that Dark Horse's most profitable comic IP is Hellboy and that extended universe, meaning it's characters like Liz Sherman, Abe Sapien and Johann Kraus. Ignore that their most popular tie-in comics are things like Aliens, Predator, and (admittedly surprisingly) Avatar TLA/TLoK. Ignore that the ONLY woke property that makes them money is fucking Critical Role. Of course, even that is fucking pitiful considering that in 2019 it was their 6th most sold comic at...... ouch, 19,000 copies sold. Damn. Even with piggy-backing, you still barely sold a thing. It must suck to suck.

These losers will never learn. The time they could have learned came and went loooong ago. I could have felt sorry for them if they were misguided and then learnt their lesson. But they refuse to even consider it. So why should I feel sorry for people who's downfall is entirely and at this stage deliberately self inflicted? The only sad thing is seeing decent IPs get tossed away, but even that shouldn't be a tragedy since they should learn from the manga market and learn to let IPs go and just create something fucking new!

permalink save report block reply
▲ 6 ▼
– Xachariah 6 points 1 year ago +6 / -0

How can critical role make a profit if it sells only 20k?

They make, what, $5 a comic at most? That seems like enough to hire one guy to do the comic if you've got zero spent on overhead or materials or any other services.

The western comic industry is honestly terribly ran.

The model of issues at this stage are an archaic holdover. Thanks to modern manufacturing costs, issues should be digital only with TPBs being their main physical option instead. And even then, they could do better by having 2 versions that are basically standard and deluxe. Use basic materials for the standard, and better production quality for the deluxe.

It's not rocket science, but these companies are more interested in focusing on bad stories and archaic models because it's all subsidised by a dying film series that they're not even considering how close they are to losing nearly the entire mainstream western industry because it's in the shitter that bad.

I'd also include Manwha on that given how they're getting picked up more for anime adaptations. It's helped that Asia (mostly Japan) fostered a culture of BUYING it weekly from a store to this day.

The sheer amount of stuff I read weekly, I can pretty much recommend something for everyone than be stuck on either Marvel or DC.

I wish I could enjoy Manwha, but the wierd ass names Koreans have just cannot work with my brain. It always sounds fake or like some exaggerated stereotype in a movie. Its like when a South American walks in with their 14 word full names.

Its a really dumb criticism, I know.

Naruto is Naruto. Elders call him that. Coworkers call him that. The random brat on the street calls him that. He isn't Uzumaki. But even if he was, that's two names, and when talking about Naruto Uzumaki, your other options are Sasuke Uchiha, and/or Sakura Haruno. You're not going to mix up the names, they're very distinct.

Meanwhile, in Manwha, "Soon-Joon-Jin Hwa, we have found Sun-Jun-Jin Hila! He was holed up inside Saon-Joan-Jun Hua's base!"

In English writing, there's a rule to not have any two names sound too similar, unless it's for a very good purpose. Your cast should not have a Jayme and a Jamie unless they're twins or something of that ilk. Korean writing does not adhere, and in fact often goes directly against, that rule of writing, leaving western readers a bit jarred.

I think part of the problem is Korean isn't exactly pronounced as the romanized spelling you perceived in your mind, romanized names might look similar based on your understanding of the English alphabet but actually sound different if you know Korean, unlike romanized Japanese that sounds exactly like how it's phonetically spelled out in romanized letters.

I was thinking exactly this. When I was playing Total War: 3 Kingdoms, all the Chinese names read very similarly in English. To a Chinese person, I'm sure they're very distinct. But it's really hard on your "ear" to have to distinguish these names.

In English writing, there's a rule to not have any two names sound too similar

This is why Theon's sister was named Yara in the Game of Thrones TV show when in the books her name was either Asha or Osha, because the Wilding girl in a completely different part of the world and books had the other name.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 8 ▼
– Adamrises 8 points 1 year ago +8 / -0

No, its the "3 short names" thing, most of which sound nearly identical. It makes it incredibly hard to keep track of who is referring to who/what.

Again, its a petty little thing but its killed most of the industry for me.

I'd like to take you up on that. I'm terrible at picking up Manhwa as all the ones I try are reincarnation power fantasies. You wouldn't happen to know any focused around urban fantasy or military where the main character isn't some OP badass who comes back from the dead?

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 4 ▼
– SoctaticMethod1 4 points 1 year ago +4 / -0

Hmm, it's the 'isn't OP' part that is the hard one on that. Plus some of these aren't come back from the dead simply they now exist somewhere else.

On a light side you could try Solo Farming in the Tower as the MC is not op in fact he's the weakest thing there but it's because he can provide food and create friendly connections that he gets ahead. On a similar vain you have The S-Classes that I Raised where it focuses on building up those around him and I was dismissed from the Hero's Party because they don't need my training skills, so I strengthened my [Fief] which I got as a replacement for my retirement money which is one of the few the MC isn't exiled or betrayed by his party, they genuinely cared about him that they didn't want him to die following them into more dangerous areas so set him up to be a lord somewhere safe.

If it's more military you're after, I would recommend Nihonkoku Shoukan as if you've ever heard of GATE it's like that but with NO RESTRICTIONS as ALL of Japan has been transferred to a fantasy world, there's no MC in particular and fantasy weapons aren't as effective against modern weapons like jet fighters. It has rape, torture, civilian massacres and the Japanese aren't the ones doing it but fucking hell there's on event that makes them go full Empire again as the latest chapter they carpet bomb a military base killing everyone but one survivor.

Thank you very much for that. I'll have to check them out, especially Nihonkoku Shoukan as I was a big fan of the general concept of GATE. As cool as it was seeing a modern army lay waste to a stereotypical fantasy world, I was a tad disappointed that the Magic vs Technology conflict wasn't closer. Furthermore, the lack of exploration of the interregional politics between Japan, The Special Region and Earth I felt didn't detract from the story, but it was good story left on the table.
