It's been a while, but I don't remember taking much issue with her character. She was a product of failure trying to do better. I think by the end I grew to like the whole crew, especially the pilot.
You could copy and paste any random race/ethnicity/gender character in to her place and have the same character with the same motivations.
Its less about her being black and more about her being ugly with a man's haircut that is the political statement. Its normalizing unfeminine women, promoting women in man's jobs, pretending black women can be effective leaders or be competent at any meaningful task that doesn't involve entertainment.

I made this point before, if you hire people for diversity there is no reason for them to excel or work hard towards any goal, the reason for them being hired is already 100% fulfilled. Unfortunately it also makes them activists as a defense mechanism, it kind of sucks. This is why we have such different views from Morgan Freeman or Denzel Washington. Actors like them have built their careers on merit and they defend merit, if you build your career on your melanin levels you are going to become an activist.

She does not sell the character. She may be good in other roles but not every actor is good in any role. Robert Downy Jr. is a great actor that people like but he plays very similar roles and that is ok. She was not good in this character and only ended up hurting her career, although I understand she is getting her own series, apparently diversity trumps everything now.
