Just a simple question. I heard that HBO has let GRRM go due to the strike and according to him, he has written 75% of the book. If I was his publisher I’d be so annoyed with him. Had he finished the series prior to the end of the show it would’ve made a ton of money. At this point I’d try to convince him to let someone else finish it.
Anyway what is a game that we will most likely never see? I’ve heard Half Life and I want to say Elder Scrolls 6 but they insist that will be out
Or how Rowling totally had the story arc of Potter sketched out
Considering the horrible shit quality of her new stuff I'm convinced she had a collaborator on HP who did the outlining at least, if not ghostwrote the whole thing.
George "Luke and Leia were always meant to be twins" Lucas.
Claimed he had finished it and entirely scrapped it, yea... Sure. He's busy being in podcasts and on conventions having people kiss his ass for being so virtuous and witting a great series which he didn't finish. I liked the first two books... And then nothing. I am done with it, there's other great authors out there that deserve their story in my head space more.
"It was always 6 movies"
Wasn't that vampire game one? What was it called...The masquerade, that's been in development hell for a while now.
And if I'm being cheeky, doesn't Star Citizen count?
Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2. May it never see the light of day. Which would be fitting, being as it's about vampires and all.
Last I heard anything about the matter, it was going full woke. So. Probably for the best. Bloodlines was very much 'lighting in the bottle' that people to this day still point to when they try to describe the 'feel' of the World of Darkness.
They were never going to top that.
It wasn't even lightning in a bottle considering it was a total sale flop. Cult classic that wasn't very good tbh.
A lot of stuff got dumped during the pandemic. I think this is one that will bubble up again.
What is Star Citizen supposed to be about?
Star Citizen is a game about crowdfunding for Star Citizen. ;)
Lol. Understand
Space in a sci fi setting, they started with exploration, fights and couriering goods but they keep slapping so much additional 'we'll have this next who knows if it'll EVER release
It's actually released now. I've got close to a thousand hours in.
The other answers are good enough but just to give you more context, the lead dev Chris Roberts is famous for his work at Origin Systems creating the Wing Commander and Privateer games. These were praised at the time for cinematic story, branching plot points, and for what was at the time an almost simulation-level of detail of what flying a space fighter might be like. Though physics-wise it was more like a jetfighter, it had tons of little details in how you control the ship and in Privateer places you could go in the galaxy. It really did immerse you into the feel of being a pilot with his own ship in a future universe where mankind has discovered a network of FTL slipstreams around the galaxy.
Star Citizen was originally only supposed to be new version of Privateer - about owning your own ship and exploring the galaxy for fame and fortune. Living a fantasy life in a "space simulation". Not unlike Elite Dangerous if you're familiar with that. The first kickstarter campaign wasn't even going to have landing on planets. Planets would have been a menu screen like in the original game. Then the developers did backer polls and started promising items from the community wishlist and the scope creep became larger than the game universe itself. (which is why it's hard for me to commit to calling it an outright "scam" - people did keep asking for more)
Had it released on a timely schedule they would have been given accolades for an impressive roster of features compared to other games at the time. Now if it ever releases at all people will just be like "oh that's nice but game X already does that".
Sounds like a cool game. Maybe Starfield will be something like that
Absolutely, with mods, as long as you don't need multiplayer.
In the beginning of development Bethesda promised "NASA physics" but it's clear they have now moved away from the "realism" angle and we'll basically have space magic. So it's Skyrim in space. I'm sure someone will mod it to be more of a space simulator.
Nah, there's no atmospheric flight in Starfield, so if you want a cool Fallout-in-space experience with some occasional dogfighting, then Starfield is your jam, but you'll never get moments like this in Starfield...

A copy of the Elite: Dangerous internal playtest.
Ten years and half a billion dollars in funding, still in alpha, at one point I was interested perhaps but I lost interest about 7 years ago. At this stage I call vapourware
Knights of the Old Republic 2 is the one that most comes to mind. Brilliant but unfinished. Tons of cut content that fans have tried to re-integrate into the game. The story is great and unfortunately time and budget constraints meant the "real" story will never be completed in a satisfying manner.
I was particularly interested in Darth Nihilus who could have been so much more. The framework was there to have a really deep Planescape-tier story that never materialized.
Quite possibly the best tutorial/starter zone of any RPG game ever made.
Not sure I agree about Peragus. The mystery aspect is really fun the first playthrough, but once you know what happened it's kind of a slog. I had a save file that I used to start new playthroughs that started at Telos.
I might have nostalgia glasses on buy iirc I really liked it the first time through as lightside and was still enthusiastic on both my next lightside playthrough and my darkside playthrough.
Is that due to Disney taking over? I’ve always wanted to play KOTOR. Or get the single player game at least.
KOTOR is the single player game. The MMO is just TOR. And KOTOR 2 was long before Disney. Long before Mass Effect (oh wait, 2 was Obsidian rather than Bioware, wasn't it. Another sign of just a rushed sequel)
Got them confused. Thanks!
kotor 1 is close to perfect as a game
kotor 2 takes everything good about 1 and makes it 5x as big BUT because it is so huge if you try to grind straight through eventually it will turn into a slog
It is one of those rare games where you should intentionally limit your playtime to savor it. If you play it and like it enough then try the community re-build that tries to integrate the cut content and endings. I don't remember the link but this is a good reason to get it on PC instead of console.
Play 1 first though. It is good and gets you familiar with the d20 star wars system if you haven't played d&d 3rd edition.
KOTOR is basically one of the best Star Wars games ever made. It's hard to top. It basically gets Star Wars in a way few games do while not being afraid to actually - gasp - come up with new stuff to fill in the lore.
I like KOTOR2 more, though. It really did play around with the lore and go in philosophical directions you wouldn't really expect from a game about Space Wizards with Laser Swords. Some people have issues with that, but I love it.
Plus, it has Kreia.
SWTOR, the MMORPG... really, not gonna lie, while I have issues with some of the decisions made for some characters I like that only get mentioned in the background, I've got a weird, fond affection for the game. It's also got some really good story with some of the characters you can pick.
and best girl visas
I played 2 before 1 for whatever reason. I loved the amount of control and influence you had on your party members, turning some even to jedi was amazing. I doubt we will ever have a game like this again.
Beyond Good and Evil 2.
Duke Nukem Forever
This is what I think of when I think 'vaporware' even though it did actually release.
You can see the art styles that its production cycle outlived within the game as you play.
Mega man legends 3
Half Life Episode 3, the next Deus Ex, and the Valley of the Gods game all come to mind. I was going to add the Skull and Bones Assassin's Creed spinoff, but apparently that came out already.
Valve counting to 3 with anything really...
Honestly, I like HL but I would personally prefer a portal 3. Loved the first two games to death and then nothing ever came of it after like with a lot of Valve titles.. Sad.
A 3 anything from Valve would be nice.
Half-Life 3 will seemingly never come out. Elder Scrolls 6, on the other hand, totally will. It's Bethesda, not like they even need to finish the game to release it. They'll delay, delay, delay, but it will come out, in one form or another. Then the modders can get to work.
Exactly. I can see myself playing modded Skyrim and ES6 until I die
Once Starfield is out in the wild, they'll probably go harder on finishing ES6. Hell, they probably already shifted some staff over, with just so many guys that they need to do whatever they're planning for DLC.
Starfield is scheduled for next month isn't it?
So they are just working on the day 1 patch like any other major game release I suppose.
I used to be in agreement with HL3 never happening, and as someone that considers HL to be my all time favorite game series, this bummed me out. I think HL Alyx, and the ending, probably reopened the door though, and I think it will happen eventually.
X-Com 3.
The rebooted X-Com was a resounding success despite how similar to the original it was in terms of mechanics. While you couldn't specifically place where your base was, or build multiple bases anymore, the mission content remained faithful to what players had enjoyed for years.
Then came X-Com 2 which picked the playerbase up in a limo, took them out to dinner, wined and dined them with almost endless treats, then took them back home and treated them to a night that wouldn't be forgotten.
Then they did it again with the War of the Chosen expansion, Alien Ruler DLC, Spark DLC, and TLP DLC.
The mod library, actual character customisation [which could at times have more time spent on it than said characters would end up living for on missions], and multiple new takes on the game meant everyone had mor balaten than they knew what to deal with.
Then there was all the User Generated Content/UGC in the mod library such as Long War 2, The Hive, Capnbubs accessories, and so many more than did the same thing, offering levels of customisation you probably can't find in any other game. Countless voice packs ripped from other games, weapon and armour skins from CoD, Mass Effect, Destiny, Star Wars and Trek, Overwatch, Halo, and more.
It truly was the kind of sequel that exceeded everything that came before it.
And then we got Chimera Squad as a follow up... 🙄
And then Jake Solomon went to work on other projects... 😐
Plus Phoenix Point went Epic exclusive which killed a lot of interest in the game for many 💀
So not only is the bar set extremely high for an actual third installment, but so far everything directly and indirectly related to X-Com 2 has been less than good news.
X-Com 3 could easily improve on X-Com 2 at a technological level just by using newer engine tech. Matching the sheer quantity of content would naturally take a long time but the theoretical content that could be enabled with better tech would be huge.
More bad news is that Jake Solomon quit Firaxis and said he doesn't want to make more turn based strategy games. Fuck Marvel midnight suns.
I thought he said he was really excited about Midnight Suns. Maybe that was someone else.
Solomon may have been, but I wasn't, I wanted XCOM 3. Just like Square Enix should've been making another Deus Ex instead of the Avengers. Now Solomon is apparently burnt out on strategy games, had the one left in him and it wasn't XCOM.
Freelancer 2. M$ murdered that one back in the day.
SilkSong
A little out of left field, but the complete Metal Gear Solid V. I mean yes you can pick up a copy off a shelf right now but the game itself is unfinished and with Kojima off doing walking sims it will never be.
Like a full third of the game was never finished, mission 51 was only the tip off the iceberg with the behind the scenes knowledge we have today. Complete story arcs, characters, gameplay systems, hell the actual ending of the game all cut or just not finished.
I am eternally curious to know what actually happened between Kojima and Konami. You don't see that treatment in Japanese businesses especially with someone that beloved and of that level of status in a company.
GTA6
Honestly I can't think of anymore besides updates to mods I really like.
Borderlands is notable for having a third game that not only didn't conclude the plot, it took the whole thing in a radically different and disconnected direction entirely, storywise.
I'd say my answer is technically borderlands
The sequel to Inherit the Earth.
How has no one said Star Citizen yet.
There you go. Hell I'd argue that Winds of Winter is actually the Star Citizen of books.
Duke Nukem Forever. Don't expect Winds of Winter to be good if it ever does release.
