The degradation is shown so easily in the mass effect series:
1st game was limited by tech but effort was still made
2nd game showed this was the thought process at Bioware at the time as between Miranda, Tali and Liara it seems that was the focus on female characters although the rest of the body including faces were as attractively feminine as possible with tech available.
3rd game showed the strain especially with the self insert reporter, she looked bad compared to the returning and a new lesbian addition (and sex robot let's be honest here about EDI's design) but connection to previous game stopped a total degradation
Then andromeda happened, oh boy was 'their faces tired' with that game. I think the problem wasn't just that they relied on mocap more, it's that they thought it was a cheaper and quicker solution than having talented artists. The Western studios have lost the artistic talent to know what beauty is especially when they are trapped inside their bubbles.
The male protagonist in andromeda is traditionally attractive and very closely resembles the real life model. The devs deliberately hit the female protagonist with the ugly stick - she looks nothing like the (much hotter) real life model.
That muscular reporter in ME3, lol. I remember laughing because it looked so rubbery, so unnatural (actually a lot like muscular women IRL). Ive never been attracted to women who look like men, would rather a slightly chubby girl (who at least still has some feminine features unlike new Aloy and her porky contemporaries). I couldn’t help but notice when you bang Ashley for the last time that they’d just copy pasted the reporter’s body, what a let down, lol.
Then in comes MEA, featuring purple Shrek, Dolph Lungren mid-transition and “my face is tired” lady.
Worst thing is, once all the bugs were patched, Andromeda was actually quite an aesthetically beautiful game with some awesome set pieces and a lot of cool concepts like the black hole at the centre of the star system, the abandoned Asari arc sections, the desert planets etc. But the characters’ faces were somehow a shittier quality and less realistic than earlier games they’d made a decade earlier.
It’s one of the reasons I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt thinking “oh they just corners because they were lazy” etc. Now that we have confirmation that they deliberately set out to make characters uglier, it’s just made me nope out on half the games this generation.
Dragon Age shows a better progression IMO. First game had slutty lust demons, second game had busty pirate wench, by the third game the women were all ugly old slags and bull dykes, with the men still being chiseled calvin cline models.
Mocap is not why andromeda looked so bad. Mocap was used in 1-3. And mocap also isn’t a magic thing. There is usually quite a bit of clean up and manually adjusting bits of it. if they had relied on mocap more for the faces their facial animations would likely had been better. What they were doing was using a procedural system to make the faces deform with the va work on some of the characters. This system could have been a good idea considering how dialogue heavy the series is, but it did not work well and they shipped with it anyways. The andromeda team had quite a bit of inexperienced people working at all levels of production with an engine they didn’t know how to use and a writing staff with a political narrative they wanted to push. On top of taking feed back from feminist harpies and intentionally making all female characters ugly..
Also, they were using the EXACT same tech and performance capture tech that DICE used for BF3 and BF4, they called it 4D Capture because it was so accurate in capturing detailed features and movements at the time:
https://www.slideshare.net/DICEStudio/modular-rigging-in-battlefield-3
The crazy part about it is that Battlefield 4 came out years before Mass Effect Andromeda, so there's no excuse about the tech not supporting what they were trying to do.
Everyone blaming the tech is still using Lefty talking points. It was never a tech issue, it was an agenda, as you said, plain and simple.
Exactly, and the argument that frostbite wasn’t built for rpgs is silly considering it also wasnt built for fifa, but I believe that years fifa came out built on frostbite and no one ran around like they just filled up their adult diaper.
Yup, you're right, and if memory serves, wasn't that the FIFA with the cinematic story mode?
I know Frostbite was also used for Mirror's Edge 2 and I think one of the Need For Speed games? Mirror's Edge 2 was a parkour-based, melee-focused, pseudo-open-world RPG. It basically had a lot of the same fundamentals as Mass Effect just without the overt third-person inter-mingling busywork. I don't remember there being any complaints about the faces, animations, or workflow of Mirror's Edge 2 (though the game obviously had other issues).
It's a real shame because the Frostbite picked up a horrible rep due to the corrupt journos at the time and the inept, activist-driven devs blaming the pipeline and engine for the woes of Mass Effect Andromeda, even though BioWare had a far tougher time making the original Mass Effect on the UE3, which was poorly optimised, didn't have a lot of support for what they wanted to do, and they had to use a lot of techniques to hide some of the engine's flaws, at the time. It really shows just a different mindset and skillset between the two generations.
It's the intentional eradication of beauty to be more "inclusive", so everyone can be demoralized, and more susceptible to revolutionary violence. You won't protect what you're not invested in.
I think the amazing thing is that there are so many people denying the reality of "ugly-ifying" characters that has been going on. The evidence is right fucking there, crystal clear with no room for ambiguity. But they still deny the reality of it all.
I wonder if it's due to the leftists innate compulsion to never say anything even remotely negative about others unless they ideologically disagree with them. Seriously, if you ever get the (unfortunate) chance to be apart of a hardline leftist group without giving yourself away, just look at how often people will walk on eggshells. Look at how delicate they try to be around what they really want to say. And god forbid if any of them confide in you, because even in online communities you can tell there is fear in what they type in case it gets reveals. In some cases, I do feel sorry for those individuals, because deep down they know it's ridiculous. But they bring it on themselves.
But because of this atmosphere of constantly walking on eggshells, they'll never acknowledge reality right in front of them unless it's ideologically approved first. Until that happens, to them the Emperor is clearly wearing clothes.
the incredible majority of this is losers coercing their way into creative roles as diversity hires, and then abusing it for self insertion scams. every week, there's yet another movie or game out where the female character model looks abhorrent, and it turns out it's just another self insertion scam by the tranny or hambeast diversity hire on the design team.
they're toxic, insecure losers who, instead of trying to inspire people to be amazing, they insert their loser selves and try to normalize that as something that's okay. and then they must emasculate all men around them in that show/movie/game to feel better about themselves being insecure losers.
go back into the 80s, with fucking he-man vs barbie. today, feminists bitch and whine about barbie being wildly unrealistic, that her dimensions would make her own neck snap, blah blah blah. yet guys look at he-man, and despite knowing it's a comical exaggeration of muscles and brute force, we're like FUCK YEAH!
That Critical Drinker video is good, but I have to point out that I think that what we see here is just a burning of the aesthetic; where the cultural pathogen of demoralization has already fully taken it's course. Hollywood isn't even really capable of showing us upstanding moral characters. They've basically gone between fully celebrating a objectively villainous person as a hero (or someone with lots of good points), to the "hero" being a nihilistic failure that just needs to stop a greater evil from destroying the world, mostly because it seems like the right thing to do, even if the world should just get destroyed anyway.
I don't think it's possible for anyone in Hollywood to tell the story of a moral character.
I don't think it's possible for anyone in Hollywood to tell the story of a moral character.
A weird one-off exception that has stuck with me since I've seen it is Winter Soldier.
They nailed Captain America in that. He was not for duplicitous deep state agendas; he never waffled or wavered about what was the right thing to do; he was not adherent or accepting of subversive government agencies (even standing against SHIELD when needed) and always believed in maintaining the moral high ground.
It's no wonder almost everyone universally agrees that's the best MCU movie ever made. It was a rare glimpse into a morally righteous hero just trying to do the right thing.
That's correct. I believe most people call it an espionage-thriller, which it basically is. It also has the best action scenes out of all the Marvel movies as well. It's just an overall really good film.
I will say, I think your argument when it comes to Cyberpunk is not great. The other stuff seems spot on, but Cyberpunk seems like cherry-picking. That 2020 image is a nightmare, I'll give you that, but the final game looked nothing like it; generally the characters are relatively attractive, or at least fit the theme, without being uglified. What's the story with the 2020 image, I don't even remember seeing it?
EDIT: Alright, that Cyberpunk collage is compelling, maybe it's worse than I remembered. A lot of the main character look fine, but some of those others are certainly real janky.
Ugh, she looks like me. Society is lost, send the meteors. How pathetic do you have to be to cry over a fat video game character? And to do it on stream? And then to post a tweet about your bullshit on stream? I can't put into words how gross that is. Also, is that a default character or something? Or just character creator?
Oh, and I didn't realize Dove had quadrupled down. Yikes.
OH GOOD LORD, THAT'S DEFAULT AND UNCHANGABLE?!?!?!?!
Blizzard, what the actual shit? I know you've fallen massively over the years, but I expect better, even from you!
Holy fuck. My mind is actually blown. Like, as an option this is fine. Dark Souls style (and so many other games, that just sprang to mind as having weird character options); let people make ridiculous clown characters, or attractive characters. But to just have this be the druid character, wow. Also, like the theme of this thread...this isn't even just a fat character. It's a fat character with that very specific "modern beauty standard." Jeez, what an absolute abomination of character design in that game. From the company that used to be the best at visual design, pretty much.
Most of the women don't even have noticeable breasts, the necro especially has essentially zero chest.
I was thinking I might see how Titan Quest held up, haven't played it in like a decade, and they've done new stuff. Also, maybe get back into Victor Vran. It's classic ARPG, but also does some things different. Worth checking out, if you haven't. At least as far as I recall, it's been a while for that one as well.
Last Epoch is pretty fun despite the story not being complete. (Endgame scaling randomized content IS in as well as tons of viable builds for completing that.)
Yeah, Last Epoch looks pretty sick, I've seen a lot of people singing its praised. I'll probably check it out at some point, but for now I'll probably play something I already own. But it's definitely on my list, looks really intriguing.
Lore-wise I guess she was storing up for winter hibernation in bear form, just getting snug in her den, and that's when Lilith showed up. So inconsiderate!
An agree, ugly, obese bitch? And you're fucking proud of that?
Imagine how many times a guy would be told to kill himself if he saw a picture of a balding, middle-aged, overweight man as the hero character, and thanked the developers for making characters look like him.
And you want to play that? I hope it runs like you too. In the first dungeon "Escape from the enemy warrior" or whatever. You die, over and over, because its walking pace is faster than the earthquake generator you call running.
Who wants to play themselves in games anyway. Even if I make a character like me, I often don't, it gets improved on a bit. I don't want to play me.
They're uglifying women supposedly in order to appeal to the female demographic. Unrealistic looking women are apparently the reason for their many body dysmorphic disorders and other mental afflictions. And in order to draw them in, ugly self-inserts were deployed to lower the threshold.
Meanwhile, guys are constantly exposed to genius-level rhoided muscle apes in their entertainment and no one even blinks about it.
The 'fair gender' is not only physically but also mentally weaker, apparently, according to these gender equality champions.
I recall a dev interview re: Dragon Age Inquisition where the art director specifically said "Beauty standards are subjective" and so it didn't matter how the women looked. Yet they still made sure to conform to all male attractiveness standards, esp. for the literal bull queer.
Nice work. Aloy being the quintessential example of uglification, it's only appropriate that's she front and center in the article.
That said, I do recommend emphasizing Eastern characters (Tifa, Aerith, DoA, KoF, Senran, etc.) more near the end as an obligatory palette cleanser for all the pour souls that waded through the excrement that is modern Western agenda-pushing aesthetics.
It’s a shame how the reputation of the first game in the 2013 Tomb Raider reboot is soiled by the impact of the second and third games. The first game is genuinely a great game with beautiful aesthetics and good writing, and it really shouldn’t be considered part of a trilogy—a series, unavoidably, but not a trilogy—with the latter two. Lara Croft looks like a complete different person in Tomb Raider 2013, and so does Jonah. In every regard besides the rendering technology, it’s as if the developers purposefully made things bland.
It’s funny that you can find numerous posts on the Tomb Raider subreddit like this that carefully prod into the subject of why the main characters look different, and the response is usually the excuse that “the technology improved” or “she got older.”
Along the vein of archaeological adventure games, the Uncharted series also suffered quite a bit with A Thief’s End and The Lost Legacy, which had all the main characters—Nate, Sully, Elena, Chloe—looking almost unrecognizable, and less attractive, compared to how they looked in 1, 2 and 3.

That's because of Neil Druckmann. He was in charge of those and he made them horrible. Uncharted 4 didn't even act like it was part of the same series of games that Amy Hennig directed (obviously, since she didn't direct Uncharted 4).
The art direction for Lawbreakers seemed uninspired, derived from other post-2009 MOBAs, royales, and avatar shooters instead of '90-'06 Id/Epic/similar. I didn't know CliffyB was intentionally embracing woke weirdness.
Arena shooters have a problem with the core-gamer market of demanding constant alertness and more veterancy than other multiplayers to enjoy.
Presumably[1] UT03/04 were able to live past the late 90's by having casual servers and mods to satisfy PC gamers who want to chill after school or work. Starcraft 2 had a similar fun vs. competitive issue where the 1st had player-driven variety. Even if Lawbreakers had better art direction, it would have failed since it didn't find a way to vary its gameplay loop. I'm undecided on whether a multiplayer needs to be freemium (which Lawbreakers wasn't) these days to sell.
I didn't have a properly setup gaming PC until 2005, and played CS:S, BF2, Guild Wars while UT would have had a population. Not having first-hand experience with the heyday player-base dynamics, I can only extrapolate how much enjoyment casuals got out of the era. Q3 forks were more fun than UT3, but the playerbase was so damn small even 15 years ago.
Edit: I'm getting deja vu of making this comment before. Lawbreakers is shockingly unremarkable.
Last time I checked the reason is more practical rather than ideological.
Most AAA productions these days have a standardised production pipeline where they used mocap for everything and only hand animate stuff they cant mocap.
Voice actors aren't just voice actors anymore, they provide mocap as well.
When done well and done right it stands out with cinematic excellence, like Lost Judgment, the Yakuza series, or practically any Japanese/Chinese/South Korean game utilising cutting edge tech.
When done with the intent to demoralise and subvert, well... we get the current Western tripe.
Its even funnier because men are simple, we will find attraction in the most basic and contradictory shit. Small boobs? A huge market against the big boob guys. Armpits can draw you a massive audience alone.
Which means, its not even putting in attractive women. Its simply putting in ones that aren't actively ugly and offputting on purpose to let the guys who would like that flavor enjoy themselves.

They got his body proportions all wrong and left him looking like a Pete Buttgig manlet.
Eh, at least with proportions an argument could be made that was done for animations sake rather than deliberate uglification.
That muscular reporter in ME3, lol. I remember laughing because it looked so rubbery, so unnatural (actually a lot like muscular women IRL). We will never see the stats on how many people played female druids in Diablo 4.

There’s a rudimentary character creator but all the options for female druid are various flavors of ham planet.
The Asian sorceress is the only character or NPC in the entire d4 game that's even remotely attractive, and then only from the neck down.
My guess is they had an ugly model ready but were told it just wouldn't sell in Asia without her at least not looking hideous.
I looked through some character customization videos. All the women in that game look like men, to varying degrees. At least the sorceress almost has tits, and is the least masculine of the bunch.

Hambeasts and the fugly women are determined to try and force men to want them. It's just pathetic.
Edit: I'm getting deja vu of making this comment before. Lawbreakers is shockingly unremarkable.
I had people saying.. beauty is subjective lol.
How embarrassing.
While I don't disagree with what this article says, the writer comes off as a fucking douchebag virgin lol.
Are you implying that

Its even funnier because men are simple, we will find attraction in the most basic and contradictory shit. Small boobs? A huge market against the big boob guys. Armpits can draw you a massive audience alone.
Which means, its not even putting in attractive women. Its simply putting in ones that aren't actively ugly and offputting on purpose to let the guys who would like that flavor enjoy themselves.
