Retribution isn't accepted in the West, and it feels like everyone is flexing how "mature" and "beyond that" they are.
Recent example at work: People were talking about a story where a guy killed a robber who tried to steal his wallet with a few bucks inside. Coworker said he doesn't know how the shooter could live with himself. "I'd be pissed if someone stole something from me but I wouldn't want to SHOOT them, gosh!" Other people nodded in agreement.
