I went to college with quite a few people who pretty much only played cod and fifa on PlayStation. Now half the games they play will be exclusively on Xbox/pc
For consumers? no. Google is pretty happy with all its ad acquisitions, all those companies are dead and there is no competition. Oracle is pretty happy with its patent trolling from its acquisitions. Game companies are pretty happy with their small company buys where they produce garbage sequels and everyone buys it.

digg refused to sell to multiple companies, ultimately turning down a $200m offer, only to do their next funding round only at $175m, and then they promptly collapsed.

Yeah, I keep subscription running, because I have enough ingame gold to keep a subscription running for 20 years (of course it won't last that long with ingame inflation, but you get the idea).
And it's a decent activity that I enjoy doing while watching some soccer games.
Then I clear the LFR raid (not really interested in organized raiding anymore) and do 1-2 M+ a week (KSM is my goal, which I usually get).
I get maybe 2 hours / week out of WoW, more when new content releases. And as I said - it's free.
No idea if they are still following that rule, but they do have it. And yes, I can imagine it, after all we live in $CurrentYear and crazy is the norm :/
