CIVILIZATION - AFRICANS

If they want ownership of that they're also getting the blame that comes with it.

What's that you say? Not so interested anymore? Funny, that.

I saw an article that gave the real truth. As you can guess quite a few claims were downright false and other claims were actually someone who made an improvement on an existing item which is a good thing so why not say that. Very few invention claims were legitimate.

I wouldn’t expect the people who put this out to do any fact checks

I did some random ones and they all fell in the parent improvement category. It’s just sad that they have to obfuscate the actual accomplishments of the people.

Former chess player here.

Chess has its origins in a game from India, called chaturanga.

That being said, it was Britain that refined the game into what we know now, with the last movement rule change happening in the 1400s.

One thing that black people DID invent was the Super Soaker, courtesy of former NASA engineer Lonnie Johnson.

The worst thing about this garbage is that guys like Johnson are thrown in with the inventor of the "insect destroyer gun" and the "rocket catapult". Kinda hard to take him seriously...

▲ 16 ▼
– Jack 16 points 2 years ago +16 / -0

I always say this when I hear about Johnson invented the Super Soaker, it has nothing to do with his race but I don't need to preface that here I suppose.

Super Soaker isn't an invention, the concept existed and is essentially a pump pressured sprayer that one uses to fertilize their lawn or spray for bugs. Lonnie Johnson didn't invent anything, he took a pump sprayer and put it into a water gun format. Don't get me wrong it was brilliant marketing and a revolutionary toy. But it always chaps my ass when people say he invented super soakers like the idea of pressurized water being projected out of a nozzle was his idea or something.

Smart dude came up with a good toy. Made millions. Didn't invent shit so much as repurposed something with a more catchy design. Fight me.

Africans aren't black.

Africans, are in fact, multi-ethnic & multi-racial.

Just because something was invented by an African, it doesn't mean that thing was invented by a black African.

No surprise, it's almost all or entirely bullshit.

Just as an example, I looked up first helicopter, and this was the first thing that popped up. Igor Sikorsky, in 1939. Black man Paul E. Williams was two months old. There was also the Cornu helicopter even earlier in 1907.

As far as I can tell in regards to Williams, he was credited as "inventing" the first "useful" helicopter. Or...uh, "components" of it. Maybe. There's no source as far as I can tell. He worked in the vicinity and time frame of the Lockheed Model 186, while being black. No official mention of him in relation to the helicopter seems to exist.

And most claims come from BlackCultureNews and...and I'm not kidding here, "Africa's Wakanda," a Facebook group. It really does seem to be a case of "a black dude worked at a company at the same time a cool product was produced, therefore he invented everything, trust me bro."

There are things here that barely deserve mention. Like nobody else would have ever stumbled upon the doorstop, pencil sharpener, bottle cap, hairbrush, or the mind expanding glory of the mop. True genius.

Also, weren't jews claiming that one of them invented the cellphone? They've paraded that out there before.

I'm sure all those Africans invented a game with a fucking Bishop and a Horse, two things that had to be imported into their continent later.

Also they'd probably do a lot better if they didn't get lazy and copy paste the same name for a bunch of inventions that are so far removed from each other's fields that it strains any credibility that someone would be competent in both.

Like in what world is this Morgan guy just casually inventing a fucking gas mask and a traffic signal. Why is he dabbling in both.

The thing I hate the most about this bullshit is it actively demeans any actual black accomplishments by lumping them all in with this kind of nonsense.

George Washington Carver did NOT invent Peanut Butter, Paint, and Lotion. But he did create a load of peanut-based products as part of an overarching plan to encourage crop rotations in the US. He did a lot of neat stuff, but you'd never know that looking at this nonsense.

I'm not bothered to go through it all, but last time I saw this, I think the majority of these things were either very much part of a team, outright lies, or patent squatting on an idea already created but altered and then never actually realised.

Rotary Engine!?!? I guess Wankel was a fraud. This list is also missing ā€œThe Human Raceā€ and ā€œGravityā€

Apparently on the rotary engine it most likely didn’t work in reality, but was still granted a patent. Certainly not as successful of an invention as the paper wants to mislead. It was not actually commercially viable and the Wankel engine is predominantly what anyone will think of when ā€œrotary engineā€ is used - despite it having several challenges as well.

I can tell you the AC unit was not invented by Fredrick M Jones.

The modern one was likely Willis Carrier. But I'd have to look it up to be sure.

But I mean, before the modern types, there were passive types for centuries. Thin walls inside the larger standard walls, meant to be used as air ducts found in ancient Syrian buildings meant to catch cool moving air and move it around your house.

And before that, they had freestanding chimney-like structures on rooftops meant to catch air on the columns and push it down and move it throughout the house passively collecting and moving air.

Yeah, blacks lie.

For instance: Adoplh Shamms inventing the multi stage rocket, patent https://patents.google.com/patent/US3199455A/en in 1964.

Well that's all fine and dandy, but the first multi stage rockets were invented by the Chinese some time in the twelfth century. The first practical multistage rockets were Korean weapons of war used as Ship to Ship rockets, the Singijeon in the fifteenth century.

By 1551, muitple European arsenals were experimenting with them.

Tsiolkovsky, Goddard, and Oberth, all independently came to the same conclusion with regards to getting to orbit with multi-stage rockets, and all did it before WW2.

In 1949 RTV-G-4 Bumper two stage rockets were launched from White Sands missiles range, and reached an altitude of 393 km.

Asparagus staging was invented as a concept in 1947 by Mikhail Tikhonravov.

Sputnik was launched atop a R-7 two stage rocket in 1957.

The Titan I was the first US multistage ICBM, with it's first successful flight taking place 5 February 1959.

Blacks had nothing to do with the invention of multi-stage rockets. Deport them all from America.

Just off the first few things in the list, and using Wikipedia (yes, yes, I know a terrible source)

Paper:

The first paper-like plant-based writing sheet was papyrus in Egypt, but the first true papermaking process was documented in China during the Eastern Han period (25–220 AD),

Chess:

The recorded history of chess goes back at least to the emergence of a similar game, chaturanga, in seventh century India. The rules of chess as they are known today emerged in Europe at the end of the 15th century, with standardization and universal acceptance by the end of the 19th century.

Alphabets:

The first letters were invented in Ancient Egypt to aid writers already using Egyptian hieroglyphs, now referred to by lexicographers as the Egyptian uniliteral signs.....The first fully phonemic script was the Proto-Sinaitic script, also descending from Egyptian hieroglyphics, which was later modified to create the Phoenician alphabet. The Phoenician system is considered the first true alphabet and is the ultimate ancestor of many modern scripts, including Arabic, Cyrillic, Greek, Hebrew, Latin, and possibly Brahmic.

Medicine:

The earliest known medical texts in the world were found in the ancient Syrian city of Ebla and date back to 2500 BCE.

Civilization:

The Natufian culture in the Levantine corridor provides the earliest case of a Neolithic Revolution, with the planting of cereal crops attested from c. 11,000 BCE. The earliest neolithic technology and lifestyle were established first in Western Asia (for example at Gƶbekli Tepe, from about 9,130 BCE), later in the Yellow River and Yangtze basins in China (for example the Peiligang and Pengtoushan cultures), and from these cores spread across Eurasia. Mesopotamia is the site of the earliest civilizations developing from 7,400 years ago.

Airplane Propeller: "Adams" is not even mentioned in the Propeller_(aeronautics) article.

So, yeah, out of the first 6 items, being SUPER generous "Africa" gets 1 point - half a point for proto-paper and half a point for proto-alphabet. And both of those are Egypt, not sub-saharan Africa.

The actual rundown:

Middle East: 3 points - alphabet, medicine and civilization

China: 2 points - Paper, 1/2 point on civilization and 1/2 point on propeller

Europe: 1.5 points - Propeller, 1/2 point on chess

India (tie): 1 point - chess

Egypt (tie): 1 point - 1/2 point on paper, 1/2 point on alphabet.

It in fact only works if you subscribe to the idea that Africans are just so unique no one would ever invent any of this but them.

Otherwise its just saying all the negatives they bring were so worth having the Super Soaker and the Mop a few years earlier at best.

Reminds me of a meme I can't find anymore.

Pointed out how close Alexandria and ancient civilizations were to Egypt, how most of what we call ancient Egypt was actually a really small space in the north, likely at the mouth of the Nile, and below it all was the rest of Africa, circled, with the words:

"Not a single fucking pyramid"

I didn't really list them as African more Mediterranean, same as I don't list Mediterranean or the British and Irish as European.

Geography plays a huge part in culture and being on an Island or living close to a sea greatly changes that to the rest of the continent not just mentally but physically.
