Does not help that she is neither talented nor good looking.

This is the crux of it. Star Wars was a disaster but she could still get work as an actress if she could act.

She's not terribly bright either. It's a drastic difference when you compare Natalie Portman talking about playing Padme Amidala in the Prequels featurettes vs Daisy Ridley talking about playing Rey. Don't forget that this is the woman who said regarding character writing, "I don't really believe in weaknesses in people."

TBF she's pretty hot. Not a terrible actress either.

I have to give the looks award to Felicity Jones (the girl in Rogue One), but Daisy is alright with lots of makeup.

She'll look okay in a still shot. See her in motion though, and she just keeps on making all these fucking weird expressions with her face while she talks.

I don't know. Plenty of make up here, but - at a mere 30 years old - already rocking the short haired old woman look.

I can't understand how women ever think this looks attractive. It's completely ick on anything but an already super hot younger girl/woman, and at those ages, they can make anything look good.

We also have to consider that she's British. Compared to the average British woman she's out of this world.

Maybe it is a taste thing or maybe is the makeup but she looks plain to me, she has a large forehead, square face, little to no boobs, does not have a sexy ass.

If Daisy Ridley is hot, then Emilia Clarke must be an interdimensional goddess

She's hot for a normal person.

As in, she's rarely the hottest chick at the bar, but she's up there.

Hollywood? She's middle of the road at best.

My opinion on actresses in general is they're not that attractive. Their whole career is in makeup. So I am honestly not that sure Daisy would stand out anywhere. IRL you tend to notice the big tits and the big asses; if you go somewhere white and fit there are a lot of pretty faces.

It's hard cuz "normal" people are overweight; almost obese. I tend to ignore them.

implicitly because of her part in the colossally successful but controversial trilogy of films.

"Colossally successful" it astonishes me how they conflate profit with quality when convenient.

▲ 7 ▼
– current_horror 7 points 3 years ago +7 / -0

The first one was colossally successful. The second was borderline and the third one essentials bombed.

People forget that Disney paid $4 billion for Star Wars. It started in a massive hole.

To paraphrase E;R:

It took her 2 whole films before she was able to keep her mouth closed during a scene. How many films would she have to go through before she would be able to act at the level of a decent actor?

It could work for someone who is trying to look unnerving. Like a creep in a bar reverting to mouthbreathing. Or a criminal. The villainous antagonist of a drama rather than an action movie.

But it isn't a "heroic" or protagonisty look, that's for sure.

"I'm Han Solo, captain of the Millennium Falcon and the only actor whose career isn't destroyed by this movie."

Other than Ford & James Earl Jones (who had a decent career pre-Star Wars) nobody else had much of a career after the original trilogy. Mark's voice acting career didn't really start until the 90s and he barely did any live action anybody watched.

In the prequels, what non-established actors had a career after it?

I looked at Attack of the Clones.

The major characters other than Hayden Christiansen are established actors. (Which kind of makes sense; they needed a boy)

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 1 ▼
– YesMovement 1 point 3 years ago +1 / -0

That's the thing with Star Wars- other than Ford if you weren't established before you were basically never heard from again.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 2 ▼
– when_we_win_remember 2 points 3 years ago +2 / -0

I'm saying you can't apply that to the prequels because all the major actors that weren't weren't CGI / masked were established actors.

Between making a New Hope and Attack of the Clones Star Wars and George Lucas got famous. Then they could hire all these well-known actors. Perhaps other actors knew it was a kiss of death to perform. Perhaps Lucas knew and didn't want to do that. Perhaps they just preferred having reliably good actors in their movie.

From my observations, Star Wars never makes anyone's acting careers, it kills them in the cradle. Those who had already made a name for themselves tend to survive just fine, but Star Wars doesn't really boost their status either, and newcomers get grinded into pulp. One only needs to look at the actors who played Anakin in the prequel trilogy; they both disappeared completely once it wrapped up.

Heck, I can't even say the main leads of the original trilogy had amazing careers once it finished. Okay, Harrison Ford did, but he was already on Lucas and Speilberg's list of favored actors, so they had plenty of work lined up for him to better define his portfolio. Meanwhile, Hamill largely went off-camera to become a voice actor, and Fisher almost completely vanished. You'd think starring in the absolute biggest movie franchise of the century would have led to something more stellar for them, but no.

And it's happening again. Daisey Ridley is now just a puff of smoke. Boyega enjoyed a brief bump when he got the lead role in the sequel to Pacific Rim, but has since been fading into smaller side parts. And as for the guys who played as Poe and that chubby Vietnamese girl, I have no idea where the hell they went (and I don't care, and neither does anyone else). Only Adam Driver seems to have survived that disaster of a film series, though I suspect he's more or less building himself up from scratch.

The guy who played Poe still gets roles because he can actually act.

To be fair, where do you go after being in the biggest franchise of the decade? Unless you go to be the lead in the biggest franchise of the next decade like Ford what are ya gonna do?

If you're willing to live in sane and rational areas like red flyover states, it's still only about a million dollars to retire and live comfortably: Grab that trilogy paycheque, and disappear from the map.

She seemed like an ok actress and never made a fool of herself like some other star wars cast and crew. I have no issue with her. But the Star wars brand has become radioactive. Bad movies, bad shows, toxic creators. Dead brand.

That's more rule than exception as far as star wars actors. Not that the cast never did anything else ever (unless your name is Jake Lloyd) but the rule is this is King credit

You need both incredible talent and hard work/effort to avoid being pigeon holed after being the "main face" of huge movies like that. Even if the sequels were neutral to good, she would have had the same problem.

Seems Daisy here just expected to be carried into mega stardom after she was done, likely high off the sycophants defending her like a god for years while it was coming out.
