Is there ANY of the bigger studios and publishers NOT fucking up this year?

I know this is about Sony who are just jumping, legs wide onto a metal railing in terms of management and decision making but I've saved so much money on new games because these dipshits can't make ONE game that is more fun than a newgrounds flash game.

Valve continue to easily lead the pack by releasing absolutely nothing.

At this point Half Life 3 should never come out. All that will happen is Gordon comes out

They also just did the big "Family Sharing" thing which literally lets you pass games around your house for free.

Literally after Ubisoft tells people to get used to not owning games, Valve returns the concept of "borrowing" to gaming.

Not just your house. Valve's family and friends sharing is head-scratching generous.

You can authorise up to 10 other devices to access your games.

Any of those 10 devices can play any of the games with only one limitation : a specific game can only be played by one person at the time.

The account owner takes priority, with the other person using the game getting a warning the game will stop after a few minutes ( inviting them to buy the game for themselves ).

Which other 10 devices have access isn't set in stone either.

That's... surprisingly charitable. I would expect games distribution platforms to fight tooth and nails against sharing digital games.

If you have good friends you can share eachother's games along with family and siblings.

I hadn't actually set it up yet for my family, so I didn't know the specifics. But that's even more ridiculous.

Though I feel like if it gets overused it might go the way of Netflix, where the "account sharing" got so bad they started limiting it to just a household. Valve isn't nearly as bad off or greedy as that, but that almost feels too good to last.

Its a wonderful thing though, because it opens my hundreds of games in my library to my children without having to let them use my own computer or deal with multi-PC account access. They can go off and play Sonic Adventure 2 happily.

Without big marketing, just word of mouth and letting people invite other people, mind you. I feel like this needs to be mentioned considering how much money sony put into Concord, I don't even want to know how much for marketing they paid.

that's the other big thing, nobody seems to be applying the Hollywood 'add 100% again rule.'

Now I don't think it's that bad, but if it was $200m blown out another 200, to make it 400, you'd expect marketing to be another 200 on top again if you follow the standard Hollywood rule-of-thumb of adding 100% (to the original planned/expected budget)

I reckon 500 at least yeah.

I got curious after that and found an article where publishers talked about it here (archive which talks about development cost and marketing. Some excerpts:

...and marketing costs reaching up to $310 million depending on the franchise.

...and their recent instalments are approximately Euro 150 million for pre-launch development costs and approximately Euro 50 million for launch marketing campaign costs.

...Specifically, it reported a total of development and marketing costs between about $110 million and almost $380 million for some of its latest major releases.

...It provided an example that for one AAA game the development budget value could range between $90 million and $180 million, whereas the marketing budget could range between $50 million and $150 million. This publisher also submitted that for one of its major franchise's development costs reached $660 million and marketing costs peaked at almost $550 million.

While these are no set in stone variables, I'd assume since they even made bloody controllers they probably did 100% of dev budget. We will probably never know but it's an interesting thing to think about.

That's one weird thing about Burger King - you can receive a hamburger with a visible sneaker footprint on it and write them off until years later some jackass says "oh hey let's go to BK" and you acquiesce because it's convenient and you figure the person who did that has to be fired by now, right? But no, they're still there and still doing it.

I can not buy it, and I can also point out how ridiculous it is that they'll put all the stuff in it that the game buying public clearly do not want in their games.

At this point, any good will I had is gone for these studios.

If you'll just do whatever someone wants for money, that's called being a whore.

And if you're just going to slut yourself out, and do whatever big daddy moneybags says, then you have no self respect. Therefore you don't deserve any.

Which reminds me, I found Concord in a bargain bin for a dollar.

I gotta admit I was tempted for a second or two, just to hold onto a sealed copy of everything wrong with gaming as an example of what not to do.

But I still didn't buy it.

Good choice; your purchase would have still supported it.

The better choice is to not buy this slop at all.

I miss looking things and getting excited for things. I wasn't a huge consooooomer to begin with but the MCU intrigued me and was fun, and Game of thrones. There was a time 15-7 years ago where I looked forward to things like new games or movies or football season even if I didn't plan to buy/see the movie, just the hoopla of new ideas coming out was interesting. But now everything is fake and gay, or recycled but subverted garbage.

Yeah. Activists sucked the fun out of everything, across almost all mediums. At least it put the hurt on FOMO and impulse buying. I do miss having games and shows to look forward to. It's very rare these days.

Today: "If you don't like it, don't buy our game."
Release day: "Why isn't our game selling??"
Critics, 1 week after release: "9.7/10, only bigots and racist chuds hate this game!!"
3 months later: "We're excited for the most diverse Netflix series yet!"

I actively love Ghost of Tsushima, and I'll probably be stuck here defending it from people who scream woke at shadows trying to rewrite its existence for the next 7 months, but literally nothing about this game is appealing to me in the slightest and now they are actively nega-hyping it for me.

Sony already needs all hands on deck just to sell the console for these games, literally anything controversial is a huge risk for them.
