This is the type of fad that consume product was originally aimed at.

The obsession and status symbol of the things is clearly absurd and driven by women's vanity and greed. But Project Farm just did a tumbler review, and they are objectively quite good.

Wait until you find out that Crocs are now a designer brand and have prices to match

The Stanley cup thing is the exact same, it somehow became a fashion trend. 20 something chicks "discovered" it and now it's cool.

Someone at work was talking about the "Stanley cup" being the new hot thing, and I thought they were talking about the hockey trophy, so I was completely confused why young women had developed an interest in hockey.

Later, I read an article about this whole mug thing, and apparently 10 years ago it was Hydroflask. Women just follow the herd and are easily influenced.

Women just follow the herd and are easily influenced.

Reason number one for why the 19th amendment was a mistake.

Just mindless consumerism. While the Stanley cups genuinely appear to be a decent product, they're not exclusively so. I wouldn't go buying a knockoff from Temu, but there are other brands that are adequate substitutes at a lower price, unless your primary concern is being seen owning this specific prestige item and not an Iron Flask or Murrican.

Project Farm roundup, there are two brands that he recommends as just as good for less money.

It's a fucking travel thermos who gives a shit. My 1 gallon vacuum flask puts all those to shame for far less money per volume and yet I don't see people trying to one up each other over it.

That's because the female herd cares about status and trendiness and fitting in. They don't care about improvement, they care about popularity.

From Preddit's outoftheloop:

Answer: They’re a well made insulated cup that was already popular especially with women and gaining traction with teens, but skyrocketed to fame among teens in mid-November when a woman posted on tiktok a video of her car utterly destroyed by fire that had a charred Stanley in the cup holder still full of ice. The original video received more than 90 million views, 9 million likes, and a half million shares. And Stanley bought the woman a new car.

Other top search results for "Stanley cups popularity" mentioned a strategy of marketing through influencers.
It's... rather amazing what can be made into a status symbol.

One of the things that's odd about this particular trend is that Stanley has been around forever. Your grandpa had a Stanley thermos and nobody gave a shit. Now people only care if you have their oversized cup, not their more convenient and easier to carry bottles. It has to be the cup.

It's not even the brand, it's this specific product.

They hired a new guy (from the Crocs company or some other company) to market this product to this specific target audience. Apparently, the Stanley cup was particularly convenient for in the car and a couple of 'female influencers' were selling it on their websites until Stanley discontinued the product, upon which the influencers campaigned to get it back, and then it blew up or something.

There was a video about it on one of those business youtube channels. Watched it weeks ago, so take my summary as is.

Supposedly they had a collaboration of some sort with Starbucks and made an "exclusive" cup (or line of them?).
Thus, some people went nuts.

I'll tell you white girls LOVE water bottles. Some Asian, but mostly white girls specifically. I don't get it, water bottles are ubiquitous.

Remember swell bottles? Remember Yetis? Remember those filtration bottles? Remember nalgeens?

The "you're not drinking enough water" propaganda has been around and effective for decades.

It's not like your pituitary gland, adrenal glands and kidneys have an almost perfectly tuned system to autistically monitor osmolality and make you thirsty as needed.

Time and time again: if you want to sell bullshit, market it to women.

Also an healthy person can go through days without eating and drinking without any ill effects if they're not doing physically intensive activities

To a degree.

A limiting factor is that the kidneys need free water volume to excrete waste products accumulating in the blood through normal biochemistry processes.

There's absolute limits to the degree that the kidney can concentrate waste products in urine to preserve volume. Fairly quickly, the waste products backup causing delirium and poor clotting and kidney failure.

You are correct that a few days is probably fine for a healthy person, but the kidneys start breaking down very quickly beyond that without additional fluid volume to replace natural losses and allow excretion of waste.

The body also produces its own water when it burns through the stored glycogen and fats, if you burn enough stored calories, it'd be enough to give the body the minimum it needs to get rid of the wastes. the longest dry fasting record is 21 days

– Benevolentdictator 4 points 2 years ago +4 / -0

You may technically get some water molecules out of some of the metabolic cycles, but you aren't going to make enough volume to replace losses and keep the kidneys happy.

It's not going to kill you overnight but prerenal failure is going to make all systems deranged very quickly.

Company pays ad agency

Ad agency pays "influencers" to say how great this "up and coming" "exclusive" product is

Women who watch "influencers" purchase product to signal to the herd that they are up to date with the latest groupthink

It's pretty normal for them to start diluting brands that have a "rugged" image. You can go all the way back to Abercrombie and Fitch, a sometime field outfitter. Carhart is one that's been undergoing a makeover.

This is one of the top five didn't happenest things to ever not happen. Stanley is a forced meme, and I don't know that a single real person out there actually cares about the brand. It's incredibly weird for someone to make up a story about an elementary school girl getting bullied about a cup nobody in that age bracket knows or cares about.

Edit: Also, here is the source since OP wants to be useless.
