I've muted a huge number of players in games over the years. Not because they were being rude or stupid, either. A lot of them were just retards with over sensitive mics and dogs barking or babies crying. A huge number of the players I've blocked in TF2 were just spamming music and being loud for no good reason.
Don't know how I forgot to mention the people with overly loud keyboards or the dorks who insist on chewing with their mouths open on an open mic. Should've added noisy air conditioners or fans to that list too, because I've also muted a fair number of those ones as well.
One exception to this would be platoon-chat in Planetside 2. But only if you're in an organized platoon. Otherwise though you can get by with other options in most games, or just play with a small group of friends.

This is why men out compete women in a lot of areas, when they are challenged or even trash talked, the usual reaction is 'well fuck you too!' and even try harder or just be toxic back. This call for someone else when you are even lightly challenged is why there's a negative stigma.
I remember when the gaming magazine started pumping out the “women in gaming” stuff along with the whole “women take verbal abuse online” and I remember thinking are they just talking about the normal trash talk you get in games. Me and the guys would play Madden or FIFA and there was a TON of trash talk or “toxic dialogue” by todays standards

Being on the internet since probably a far too young age, I learned to not care what people say about you, especially when it's some complete stranger on the other side of the world, because who cares? They don't know you personally, and for all you know they're just trying to get a reaction out of you and don't actually believe whatever they're saying.
