How racist is Hollywood? The writers and creators somehow put Maori designs in the animated movies and didn't realize it. Now suddenly a very viking movie has a black girl, who isn't Maori.
Want another one? The Diary of a Mad Black woman is a retelling of the ancient Greek play Medea. When it was an actual play, the reviewers recognized it and even pointed out how Medea is used in black culture. When it came out as a movie, none of the reviewers recognized it and thought the character Madea was weird. They praised it for being black though.

As a former cameraman, it's way easier to get a lighter skinned black with other character than with a full dark and other characters. I've had shots where the white characters disappear to make the black character seen.

I was surprised that my own family wants to see this. I don't know if they're condemning the race swap, but they will pay to see it anyways. Mainly though my sisters and I grew up on the original.

Not really. The actor's mental image of the scene can be very different than the special effects that gets drawn around him. Which can be different from what the writer wrote and what the director wanted.

Some of the race swaps are merely unnecessary, but this movie is clearly set in scandanavia. That means: no blacks without an explanation.
It's considered "white-washing" to have a white actor play a middle easterner or east asian, which you can at least make the visual case for. She doesn't remotely pass as scandinavian; this is "black washing", full stop.
Edit: And it's a nobody actress. At least White Moses was Charlton Heston, a highly acclaimed actor, not some scrub off the street.
