Want another one? The Diary of a Mad Black woman is a retelling of the ancient Greek play Medea. When it was an actual play, the reviewers recognized it and even pointed out how Medea is used in black culture. When it came out as a movie, none of the reviewers recognized it and thought the character Madea was weird. They praised it for being black though.

As a former cameraman, it's way easier to get a lighter skinned black with other character than with a full dark and other characters. I've had shots where the white characters disappear to make the black character seen.
Meanwhile million to one contrast ratio screens was supposed to be some way to solve this. But even in those screens the dark colors don't really stand out from one another.
I think Hollywood doesn't want to stray too far from western beauty standards at least for now and for big budget shit. The Little Mermaid is further than they'd usually go.
I mean I fully expect this but people have to stop going to see this garbage. I guarantee some people will praise race swaps because it gives them virtue points.
I was surprised that my own family wants to see this. I don't know if they're condemning the race swap, but they will pay to see it anyways. Mainly though my sisters and I grew up on the original.

I think it's because they clearly believe it's a marketing strategy to treat actors like they're product placements and have them there 'in the flesh' for some reason.
The problem with this is if all they're doing is standing in front of a green screen the whole movie with zero interaction and creativity it's going to look like shit no matter what they do. It's the same thing with Ariel, I'm still annoyed at this shot I saw of her looking up and sitting on a rock or something and the actress clearly looks like she's just in a studio with a mermaid outfit on which isn't at all convincing.
Much better to go pure 3D and make use of motion capture, but that would require actual investment on part of Hollywood in proper 3D artists and motion capture tech as opposed to whatever lowballed half-arsed sweatshop workers they've got doing the CGI now. Need I mention rings of power and the latest star wars films?

Even the best actress couldn't salvage that crap and Hollywood doesn't exactly have the best personnel these days, just from the shots alone they were trying to show off I was unimpressed.

It's considered "white-washing" to have a white actor play a middle easterner or east asian, which you can at least make the visual case for. She doesn't remotely pass as scandinavian; this is "black washing", full stop.
