-never referred to herself as "disabled"
-never bitched about "ableism"
-never bitched about "fire-centrism"
-never bitched about "feminism"
-called Aang "twinkletoes" and constantly gave him shit for being girly
-never asked for gibs
-eventually became a single mother but never bitched about her ex. Said "it just didn't work out"
-still didn't ask for gibs
-ends up living alone in a swamp taking care of all her own shit and not bothering anyone else
-doesn't give Korra the pussypass and treats her like she's always treated everyone
They seriously can't tell the difference, can they?
Forget that. "Was actively offended by being treated as disabled."
Toph would dropkick this Twit in the nuts with a boulder if he was referring to her the way he did.
And lets not get into the fact that she still has flaws, and while a skilled fighter has limits. Which, you know, are shown off in like 10 minutes of first meeting her (Aang being able to fly around making it very difficult for her to counter him and read his movements).
For sure, and I thought it was a nice touch when they followed through on those limits for the desert arc.
Her flexing improved sandbending in the finale with that model city was such a great character moment. Completely useless in the final fight but it answers the question of how does she respond to her greatest failure: By becoming hyper precise with sand in her off time.
I like how there were legitimate moments where Toph's blindness was helpful, and legitimate moments where it just fucked things up a bit. It wasn't a lightswitch that could be turned on and off at will, even in the finale "Powerful but blind child can't see where she's jumping to" Becomes a point of stress.
Toph is blind jokes were never abused but always were perfect. Right down to her first episode we had gems such as Sokka hitting her in the head with the belt, and the Library's "IT'S THERE! That's what it'll sound like when one of you seeing people see it waves hand in front of eyes" is a top 10 joke. Plus all of the times people hold up posters, always a good time for a poster joke "What is this?" "I DON'T KNOW, HONESTLY WHAT IS IT WITH YOU PEOPLE?"
It's really healthy how the team just kinda flat out forgets at times. Like if she was in anyway hindered yeah those jokes may be a bit more venomous, but 90% of the time she can tell where things are much better.
I like when they're putting up posters of Appa.
Sokka: I guess Toph should come with me.
Toph: What? Just because I'm blind I can't put up posters?!
Toph pastes the poster to the wall, with the blank side showing
Toph: It's upside down, isn't it?
Her sincere but still completely off guess of it being upside down is fucking priceless, it's one of the scenes that stuck with me for literal years rent free. For me, it's when Katara is a little bit pissy at Toph for not wanting to go into the library and she's like "I've held books before, it doesn't do a lot for me." They went above and beyond the necessary during the desert arc, and also it added some drama to the pre-accepted Appa flight scenes.
Sokka: [In a hole] It's so dark down here. I can't see anything.
Toph: [Sarcastically] Oh no. What a nightmare.
Sokka: Sorry.
The picture in the Tweet is literally the 'There it is!' joke mid-scene lol
From "The Chase":
Katara: The stars sure are beautiful tonight, too bad you can't see them Toph!
savage
That's the lowest blow in the series. And most characters are partial orphans and 3/4ths of the villains blow up in Korra.
Azula: And since you can't see, I should tell you I'm rolling my eyes.
Sokka: "It's so dark, I can't see anything."
Toph: "Oh no, what a nightmare."
Toph: /Almost drowns.
Sukki: /Dives in to rescue Toph without a second thought
Toph: "Oh, Sokka, you saved me!" /kisses Sukki on the cheek
Sukki (who Sokka is actually dating): "Actually, it’s me."
Toph: "Oh! Well. You can go ahead and let me drown now."
Also: literally made jokes about her own disability such as in the exact scene the soybrain's tweet is from. Woke media would never allow a joke at a disabled person's expense.
Also created an entirely new form of advanced bending techniques and founded her own city.
It's all about what the character is to these people. Not who the character is, what they accomplish, their virtues, or their flaws. They see a character as nothing more than the surface level traits, so they can't comprehend the difference between Toph the self-made earth bending pioneer and master to the avatar, and Lashanta the blind trans genderqueen woman of color who don't need no man.
This post is fucked in many ways.
First of all, it's obviously a pompous soybitch looking for some blue haired they/them dame to suck his dick. SJW youtube "SRS movie critic" too. Oh, joy, I do love to hear the sassy snaps of dudes like that.
Second. LE DISABLED. Fucking what sort of disabled? I absolutely hate how they conflate whole chunks of humanity that have nothing to do with each other in function. This character is blind. She doesn't have a debilitating food allergy or a missing leg. She (I assume) doesn't have some mental issues. She is fucking blind. Say it. Stop with this wishy-washy, non-sepcific language. I think this is one of the biggest crimes of the leftoid zombies; they use so many fucking words that are just vague, mushy nothing.
Third. Nobody has an issue with a small/female/supposedly disadvantaged person gaining the upper hand in a situation if it's explained and it's explained well. Make it make sense. Does she have some special abilities? Did she learn something that can be useful? HELL, she doesn't even need to be physically superior to be useful and beloved. For feminazis, they love to judge women like they are men. Which is sexist in so many ways. Then again, it also doesn't hurt if she has an actual personality, motivations and backstory, instead of one more iteration of "and she Whedon-speaks at all the male characters and totally cruches the patriarchy because someone told her to make a sandwich that one time". Nobody likes a bitchy person who is about nothing but one upping the men she assumes all just exist to spoil her perfect badass princess fantasies.
The whole love interest thing. Jesus, that is so stupid. First of all, this person looks like a child. I just looked it up, she is motherfucking 12 years old in The Last Airbender and 86 in Legend of Korra. So what is this faggot talking about? Then again, it's not us who need to find a "queer" romance in children's shows and movies about underage kids, but his people. You know, infinite amounts of gay porn about every single underage character ever. No conservative/right wing/not insanely left wing person wants to see a 12-year-old as a love interest or else. Shut your whore mouth. Besides, I love how they claim every female character is a love interest. Just get into not awful mainstream media. Even there, it's not true, but I guess they can't get into anything that doesn't have a fucking Funko Pop made of it. These people seem chronically unable to look for entertainment they like! Terminally online and don't know how to operate IMDB, Goodreads, MyAnimeList or whatever. It's baffling.
But hey, he is a MOVIE CRITIC with a whole ass Youtube channel, so he must be right about his insanely insightful media essays, instead of sounding like his dialogue was written by some foot fetishist Hollywood pedo.
It sounds like you haven't watched Avatar, so I want to confirm your suspicion that this character is absolutely being dragged through the mud here. I'd practically recommend watching the first series just for her (if you think it would be up your alley)
Personality, flaws, charm, humor, etc...she has it all. Her special ability is basically that her other senses have developed quite a bit to compensate for the blindness, so she's a real badass at her style of martial arts - and she never has to whine and moan about being blind or being a girl.
Gee...almost like a well-written character that the audience can relate to no matter their situation. Imagine that.
Once I tried and watched like 20 seconds of ep 1. The... other girl, whatever her name is, was annoying. :D
To be fair, I am a super bad show watcher, I can never finish anything.
Oh, that's quite, quite deliberate. Their intention is to turn everything into a vague mush, so that they then get to choose what of that mush - ultimately - lands you in prison or is deemed so minor it gets forgotten about. That way the justice system, with it's focus on laws and facts, instead would become a political system based on obeisance and favours.
They say "disabled" to get missing limbs or food allergy people grouped together and support. Its like trans and pedos grouped up with gays and bi.
The official term is "Motte-and-Bailey" Logical Fallacy or Argument.
They attack on one ground, but defend on a completely different ground.
And on that note, she still did have somewhat romantic interests. It was a kids show, but it never went past the type of things that are essentially a schoolyard crush. Same thing happens with Aang and Katara. The idea that she "wasn't a love interest" isn't even accurate because it wasn't like she wasn't somewhat trying to be at times.
The reality is this loser almost definitely found ATLA through either the shitshow that was Korra or after the fact when it came to Netflix and the fandom got a massive boost. This person definitely jumped on the bandwagon after the fact, just like every other entryist.
They always complain about female characters being “reduced” to love interests. When was the last time you met a reasonably attractive girl IRL who wasn’t getting attention from half a dozen guys angling to fuck her? If your story’s female protagonist isn’t a child, an old lady, or a fugly fatass, then it is completely unrealistic for her to not be drowning in male attention.
found the problem. they want the character to be a fugly fatass so they feel represented.
Even worse: They want to feel more beautiful than heroic characters. It's not enough that a 260 3/10 can get her hole drilled every now and then, it's about the 3/10 getting her hole drilled moreoften than a 7+
One of the earliest rules you learn is that if she is single, that's a red flag in and of itself.
Also acknowledging that women are constantly drowning in attention they don't even appreciate wouldn't go over well with most guys. Its one of those "everyone knows it but don't dare mention it" things, because it would turn a lot of men misogynistic and hateful quick to compare their "still obsessing over being called handsome 6 years ago" lives.
Toph is a great character as she actually has flaws, has self deprecating humor and she even makes mistakes and learns from them.
These scumbags are retarded if they think any of the woke Mary Sue characters they have today are remotely like Toph.
> be me
> see people hating shows with marginalized characters but claiming its because it is poorly written or doesn't fit the story/setting
> decide to prove them wrong
> find show with marginalized character that was well written and fit the story and setting
> point out that they didn't hate this character
> checkmate
If that show was released today, the blind jokes like the one in that very image wouldn't be in there.
The fact that nobody ever did call Toph's character "woke propaganda" is itself a testament to this entire fucking post being a total strawman.
There are two kinds of people in the world. The kind of person who can look at a collective of traits that are in a character and see what that says about someone, how they act, how they react, what their wants and desires are.
And someone whose only interests ARE those traits. Good writers can take traits and weave a story out of it. Bad writers write to prop up traits. Take Toph for instance: She's IMMEDIATELY introduced as an overpowered god of her magic system. There's no question about it. And yes we learn that it's because she is a nearly self taught guru, but her skill is then very rarely seen as the solution to an episode. No plot asks "Hey, can Toph throw a rock really, really hard?" before it asks "What are Toph's weaknesses." In order right after her introduction, the plots are things like "Everyone gets frustrated at each other and Toph's unyielding nature is a huge thorn in the team's side" "Toph has never taught anyone before and Aang can't catch on" "Toph legitimately fails a fight and feels like shit." And "Toph bristles at anything that reminds her of regiment and order and has to learn to swallow her pride to help her team out." A poorly written show instead would have been like "The team learns to appreciate Toph's blindness." "Toph has to throw a REALLY REALLY big rock to take down an airship" "The team doesn't respect Toph's power enough and they split up."
I think there is more to it than that. If it had ended with her being a completely OP Earthbender, it would have made her a lesser character. Instead, we are shown the limits of her powers almost immediately after she is introduced (in the form of her being useless the second something stops touching the ground). Which I think helped to improve her character even from the beginning in a way that a lot of modern movies no longer do (see: Rey besting Kylo Ren, without any followup to show how that happened).
That's very true. Also Metal bending, she's in a metal crate and can't see or attack. I remember how it was 4 episodes into the show before we saw our first Earthbender, and it was one of the most powerful characters in the show flatout, he threw the WALL and WON. So when we next see an earthbender about four episodes later we don't really get why he's struggling to move one rock through the air. Compare that to the constant showcase of firebending and rudimentary water bending and master Airbending (Making it 6 seasons of the show before we ever saw an airbender who couldn't singehandedly take out ten elite guards even by age 7.
A shame Lok could have had an interesting play. "What happens when the Spiritual Defender of the world is left behind"
But that didn't get a proper development.
If Avatar was made in 2022 people would hate it because it doesn't have enough fags and niggers in it. In Medieval China.
Cartoon confirmed
Oh, look. Bird App is trying to gaslight people with the whole "actually, that thing you like was actually woke".
I know this show holds a special spot in many people's hearts, but:
reminder that the script had Katara lecturing Sokka with literal feminist talking points right at the beginning of Season 1
and that for most of the show, Katara was a naturally-skilled strong womyn while her male brother was a comic-relief buffoon
She is indeed a Mary Sue, with no justification as to why. Maybe water-benders follow the Inverse Law of Ninjutsu and get stronger the fewer there are.
They didn't want a Galbrush, so she needed to be more competent than the prophesied god-character. Her character arc is literally "I need to be less perfect all the time". All her stories are that she's too good, or too nice, or too mature, and she goes through narrative arcs to be less perfect. But... she DID have that character arc.
Which makes her leagues better than most Mary Sues.
Except the one where they steal the water scroll and she can't keep up with Aang and gets so bitchy pirates attack them.
Or the one where she gheushes over a guy trying to masacre an entire village because they're on the wrong side.
Same with Toph, she's completely retarded socially. They do have flaws which keep them somewhat humble (and they really can be insufferable when they forget that), and enjoyable.
They can't even tell the difference between "this character is disabled/gay/nigger because politics and that only hurts the story" from "this character happens to be blind and that is an integral part of her arc and why she is the way she is without getting in the way of a good story"
If she was released today exactly the same... they would co-op her just like what we see now and make her lame. Lol.
Funny how ABSOLUTELY NOBODY ever said anything like this about Toph until now. And I'm fairly certain absolutely nobody disliked Toph to any major degree (in TLA, Korra might be a different story). A very powerful little girl with a severe physical hindrance, but also somehow obtaining the Daredevil sense (exclusively through the earth). The series not only went out of its way to make sure she had her limits and weaknesses despite her amazing control over earth, everyone treated her as an equal to the point that they forget she's blind, such that most of the "blind jokes" are literally just her reminding them of that fact. Her greatest weaknesses? Twinkle-toed Airbenders, flying objects, and SAND (part of her own fucking element!). She had an endearing snarkiness to her, barriers to overcome (that weren't buzzword politics), and goals to reach.
She's what we call a WELL-WRITTEN CHARACTER.
I'd argue she was one of the better characters in Korra, albeit a little on the comic relief side despite being a teacher role. But to be fair, that can sum up a lot of the characters of Korra and all its contrivances.
Does twitter even have 300k users?
3 users, and 299.7k bots.
Don't worry you piece of shit, if I actually watched that normie show I would've called it retarded as well
If you created the same character in 2022 they would be written so badly compared to whenever she was originally written that it wouldn't even be a fair comparison. It's like how Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a fun character in 1998, but would be a smugger, less likable version of Brie Larson as Captain Marvel now.
Stuff like this is why I hope they never reboot MTV's Daria.
Stealing these responses to this bullshit from elsewhere:
And
These people have no idea what writing a compelling character entails, nor why people criticise the terrible writing out there.
If a show was released today that was well written, unique, and had great characters...we'd call it a miracle.
If anything it's anti-globalism, since everything that follows highlights the issues caused BY globalism while never proposing a solution - the writers are either secretly patrician or just terrible at their own propaganda.
