I mean, they should. I would have no moral burden to pirate games or movies if they do not show in my country.

Fuck them, this is a good thing for all of us.

This way at least it will increase the part of the internet I like.

Time for all based gamers to join our peace loving russian bretheren in boycotting all socalled "AMERICAN" entertainment that is trying to punish the russian people for a war that was way out of their control.

I stand in solidarity with our russian brothers refusing to 'patronize' holywood and AAA gaming of any studio that is boycotting russian gamers.

Stand with me, bois!!

Apparently they are revoking all patents too, for the patent-holders in nations that have boycotted their country.

https://www.theepochtimes.com/russia-removes-protections-for-patent-holders-from-unfriendly-countries-reports_4328708.html

Ironic that all the bannings and censorships and crackdowns might make russia the most free market in the entire world.

If you like metal music, I heard about these sites ... from a friend: https://losslessmetal.com/ https://metalminos.net/

No idea who runs these. Some of the FLAC rip logs are in Russian ... or so I've heard. I'd obviously never go there myself!

The fast and simple way - pick a decent non-corporate search engine, type the name of the media you want in quotes, and add "скачать", "смотреть" or "читать", which is Russian for "download", "watch", and "read", respectively. You'll get useful results, usually on the first page. Works from any location in the world. Just be ready to dodge a bunch of pop-ups, and make sure the media isn't translated in Russian, games in particular.

One time in Minecraft I got a ton of music from Rutracker.org.

99% of the time there were flac or mp3 options. They even had obscure stuff I wouldn't expect to find there. There wasn't anything I loooked for they didn't have. You need to make an account to download and it's in Russian but just use a page translator.

You cannot effectively DRM music or video. At some point it has to be played and that's where it can be recorded.

Even if media could only be played in uncrackable, sealed hardware (which would be so limited and cumbersome legit consumers would avoid it), you can always record it with a microphone or a camera.

However with games there is the problem of "always-online" which completely kills the games when the company decides to shut it down. Perhaps with state sponsorship we can do a better job of emulating those servers.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 5 ▼
– Strike08 5 points 4 years ago +5 / -0

That requires a lot of money spend on something that may not work at all. Companies will cheapskate it and as a result it will be cracked within the week of release most of the time.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 5 ▼
– Assassin47 5 points 4 years ago +5 / -0

it will be cracked within the week of release most of the time

I think that is really optimistic. I don't mean games that just "phone-in" to make sure you're allowed to play them. With games that legitimately need server emulation, cracking that and getting something close to the original can take years of development. Of course this doesn't apply to scams like SimCity that have a few things done by the server to make you think it needs one. Those are easier.

Ross Scott (Freeman's Mind) talks about the danger of "dead games" more than anyone else I know. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUAX0gnZ3Nw

▲ 5 ▼
– Indipendepede 5 points 4 years ago +5 / -0

The only way games will ever fully avoid being cracked is if every title is streamed. You would need all the assets and functionality to be hosted on an unhackable server, and NO LEAKS. Always on-line can easily be fixed by spoofing a server. Even if the code isn't released, you can monitor traffic to reverse engineer the proper responses like they did with some MMOs (I think WoW might be an example- hosting legacy servers).

Corporations are literally too lazy or greedy to do this. Imagine Rockstar making dedicated servers for Grand Theft Auto Online for example, they won't.

Aight Bois, please tell me you have links.

Back in 2010s I used to watch tons of movies on vk.com (Russian social media) "movie name ENG" would get many results. But they eventually cracked down.

Any other good sources? I'm talking full hd streaming with minimal popups ( no movies123 bs)

Another is actvid.com but it tends to lag sometimes.

This is actually incredibly interesting. Why would Russia enforce laws protecting non-Russian businesses if the only real thing that can be done to punish them (sanctions) is already done to its near fullest extent?

Unless a country decides to go to literal war with Russia over copyright laws, I see no reason why they wouldn't take this play.

Hell, go all in and have a Russian State media site where the state pirates for you.

What no one here is thinking about is the fact this is going to give western producers an "excuse" to load their games up with even more DRM and internet-dependent content. You know, to try to keep those damn Ruskies from stealing!

A little bit as a side effect, but like the patent law change it is targeted to imports.

The Russian Ministry of Economic Development proposed relaxing piracy legislation earlier this week to circumvent sanctions. “The possibility of lifting restrictions on the use of intellectual property contained in certain goods, the supply of which to Russia is limited, is being considered,” said the Ministry. “This will smooth out the impact on the market of breaks in supply chains, as well as the shortage of goods and services that arose due to new sanctions by Western countries.”

However if they unblock a tracker site, obviously people could share whatever they want including Russian movies.

When it comes to Hollywood movies, it looks as though Russian people will be free to pirate them, and Russian politician Dmitry Ionin has even suggested that the country may unblock the torrenting suite RuTracker to help Russians pirate Hollywood films. “Since many Western studios have refused to release new films in Russia, the parliamentarian believes that thanks to the torrent tracker, users will be able to watch Hollywood films,” reports Gazetta.

Also a natural outcome of a trade war is that other countries may decide not to recognize Russia's copyrights.

Did you watch "Don't Copy that Floppy" and mistake it for a lost book of the Old Testament or something?

You can't steal bits. Does the internet run out if you download too much? Do you have to return your bits so the next person can use them? Since every piece if software you use is copied into RAM before it is run, is every computer a burglary tool?

If you think IP is a valid concept you don't really understand how things work. Do you even know the relevant laws that apply to IP?

Or that the biggest software projects in the world are created and maintained by mostly unpaid volunteers.
