Simpsons was running on fumes by Season 20, tops. If it had any dignity it would have ended with the Movie. Plebbitors tried to force PatP as the sharkjump point for about 20 years (since that was the year most of them hit puberty) but in reality, it was a slow downward spiral beginning from as far back as S7 that really became noticeable when they switched from cel animation to digital and the characters became even more rigid in design.
I'd argue the hard cap for the end was season 9 episode 2, The Principal and the pauper. Where they just out of nowhere re-wrote a long time recurring character into someone else entirely, and even his own mother didn't care.
The start of that feeling can be traced back to Season 8 episode 23, Homer's Enemy. Frank Grimes was homer until about season 3 if you add in buffoonery. He used to work hard, he used to love his family, and he used to care about things. But they pushed too far beyond that.
So yeah, agreed that season 7 was the last vestige of the real Simpsons.
Don't know, I remember episodes from season 10 pretty fondly, but the peak may have been earlier.
I don't think many people watched the Simpsons for continuity, especially since people couldn't re-watch the oldest episodes during most of the shows run, only what was chosen to be broadcast, which was never in order at any stations near me, and only rarely any early seasons.
I think the hard drop was when Futurama started not long after that, creativity seemed to be drained to that, then when Futurama temporarily went off the air, never came back.
Futurama worked because it was a show made by nerds who lampshaded sci-fi tropes using actual science. Nu Futurama is your typical commie writer using the show to vent about politics
I vaguely remember some line from NuSimpsons where Homer and Marge were dancing while singing about Paul Tsongas.
That shit wasn't funny even when it was topical.
I was only vaguely aware of Tsongas, mostly just the memorable name, and that he was a politician.
Looking him up, if he won the democrat primary in 1992 it would have been a bizarre point of departure having a libertarian leaning, anti-deficit democrat instead of Bill Clinton. Since I believe the deficit was a key portion of the 1994 Contract with America, the Republicans might not have won the house for the first time in decades that year. Not sure where Tsongas would have stood on the GATT/Uruguay Round/WTO that established the modern low-to-no tariff era of 1994 to 2017, but probably not any different than Clinton/Bush Sr. He might not have radicalized the Department of Justice like Clinton did though.
Seasons 1-4 were Original Simpsons quality where you had to be literate and learn-ed to really appreciate it, 5-9 were mass appeal quality, 10+ was a significant drop followed by a slow decline.

I don't know anybody who has watched the simpsons since before 2010 - and that they watched it at all was just because of the timeslot and habit. Once streaming took over from broadcast nobody cared about that washed up unfunny shit at all.

Well, I was thoroughly disappointed with the South Park episodes that came out during the Biden presidency and the covid hysteria, but this seals the deal. I no longer have even the slightest interest in watching their new content.
The SP guys have lost the plot so badly I had to rethink my whole appreciation of their early work. It seems transparently obvious in hindsight that they have always been subversive agents working under the false guise that they have no agenda or sacred cows.
It is interesting to think about how much media was originally either neutral or disguised as neutral until Obama came into office. After that, even a hint of neutral is deserving of excommunication.
You even see people on the right still fooled by their schtick. Same with Daily Show and its ilk. "I liked Stewart when he was funny and went after both sides!" One of my conservative friends keeps defending South Park from 'the haters' because he claims it makes fun of everyone and the Trump admin has embraced the jokes.
Leftists are ruining the world, so anything they find funny is shit by default. South Park is endeavoring to entertain demons, so the actual content doesn’t even really matter. It could be clever and well done, and I would still disparage or ignore it simply for whom it serves. It’s the same attitude I bring to all media now. I don’t care if your video game has “good gameplay” or your movie has “good acting”. If it’s made by people who hate me, I’m not having it.

South Park's golden era ended when they got rid of Chef. They lost their edge when Comedy Central censored the Muhammad episode. They lost their political touch when they predicted Hillary would win and they forgot how to be funny with Randy's lolweed farm
I preferred it much more before they went serialized. I see a lot of leftists loving this and calling people on the right “snowflakes” if they don’t enjoy it. There is plenty you can make fun of Trump about. I’m surprised they just recycled Sadaam Hussein instead of doing a bad impression. There are some funny lines this season but if every episode is we hate Trump that gets old fast

South Park is fine lobbing shots at everything as long as things are "normal." When genuinely disruptive actions are taken they flip out because they are scared of living in a different world.

In a strange crossover BITD, Kenny Hotz from Kenny v. Spenny moved to LA to write for South Park while his show was still in production. And Trey & Matt started getting EP credits on KvS.
I recall Hotz talking about the stress of simply getting one of his ideas to air before he left because he was so out of his league (and Hotz is a pretty egotistical guy). Sort of like finally getting one of your SNL skits on the air. Can't recall if he actually succeeded.
I love the fact that the administration used their own content to promote ICE recruitment, pissing them off along the way.
