These commies continue to attribute basic facts of life to capitalism. Long work hours will not magically disappear after the "revolution".

Quite the contrary, in fact.

People who are long time advocates of extreme economic philosophies (with little to no representation in the real world) tend to start dividing everything into "our way" and "the highway". The real problems are solved in their imaginary state, ergo every problem in the real world must be the fault of fascism/capitalism.

What about those communist work hours in China? I realize the life expectancy has increased now that they've installed the suicide nets, but I'd still like to see a side-by-side comparison: life expectancy of working people in China vs the West.

I'm aware of the American left's conception of European-style welfare states as socialistic, and to be fair we also throw that accusation around on the right: it's just that we don't think it's a good thing. The "not real communism" thing is a meme of it's own at this point.

As for the "schism" on the left, it's not as cut-and-dry as neolibs vs anticapitalists. Both of those groups support many of the same ideas for different reasons, but their core goal is the same: to destroy Western civilization and the concept of nationalism and nations tied to a sense of place and a common set of cultural values based on shared ancestry and language.

The globalist elite wants that destroyed because it's good for their bottom line, and because it would put an end to the basis for most of the popular opposition to their programme. The commies just hate the West. But ultimately both groups seek to use the apparatus of government to destroy the nation state and nations in general, and each group is convinced that they will be the ones in charge after that happens.

It might be giving the rank-and-file too much to credit them with 'goals' - except being the most obedient parroting serf there is?

As I said in another comment in this thread, their motivation is hatred of the West, and their goal is to see it destroyed. It doesn't need to be more complex than that. Either they're convinced that any alternative must be better, or they're just so spiteful that they want everyone else to be as miserable as they are. That, and they all seem to think they'll be the ones in charge after the revolution.

In my experience, they don't hate "the West". They may hate its history and traditions, but they are diehard supporters of the CurrentYear foreign policy.

▲ 1 ▼
– dagthegnome 1 point 1 year ago +1 / -0

They've been indoctrinated with the belief that the society they live in is the most oppressive in all of human history and that literally anything else would be better, so they want it destroyed.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 1 ▼
– AntonioOfVenice 1 point 1 year ago +1 / -0

But why do they reflexively support Western foreign policy?

I think we assume a doctrinaire element to the normie 'beliefs' that simply isn't there. Isn't "whatever the media is saying" the more persuasive explanation"?

It's completely impossible to pin an internet leftist down on something like this, they'll just use their most obnoxious tactics until you give up trying to argue with them.

Jacobin is explicitly a Communist rag. It is in reference to the original proto-communist secret society of Rousseauian terrorists and despots by committee.

What they are trying to do is claim that someone who dies of a heart attack from eating too much fast food, which was aggravated by "stress" counts the same as a member of the NKVD going up and putting a bullet in a farmer's head, including bullets in each of the heads of his wife and three children, because of a witness claiming he was attempting to eat a grain of wheat.

These are the enemy.

I'll be honest I think with an office job I rarely do more than 4 hours of work per typical day:

-8-10 OMG THIS HAS TO GET DONE NOW

-10-1: everyone's at lunch, call later

-1-3: meeting for a project still open despite finishing three weeks ago, last chance for important phone calls

-3-5: do any paperwork you might have while watching youtube

It always becomes a question of: will someone else do all of that better than you and work 8 hours a day for the same money they pay you. If no, they may as well pay you; you reliably work 4 hours.

I guess there are factory jobs where you might work the whole time. That is not the case at restaurants; it's definitely not the case with retail. Those are the only jobs that are not computer programming that i know about.

A lot of jobs now are like that where you’re not really doing much all day. My job’s the exact opposite and I’m 100% on for every minute I’m working. Which is fine, because I make a lot more than most people. When I hear people complaining about not making as much at the average job, I’m mostly reminded that the average person isn’t actually working 40 hours a week or more, they’re working 5-20 hours a week, then complaining for the other 20.

Then with other jobs, they’re not supposed to be a lifelong vocation. Like waiter or cashier. It’s supposed to be something young people do or mom’s do on the side of raising their families or what you do while trying to figure out something else or rising up in that company or going to school.

There definitely is a big problem with the hilarious inequality of income we have now, but turning every act of service into a ‘living wage’ vocation wouldn’t appear to be the answer.

Some at my job complain of being "bored". I'm just like "fool, if you're bored, that means you're earning our VERY generous pay to do NOTHING. You can literally make a dollar by breathing five times. Breathe with me, and be ENDLESSLY entertained!"

It's amazing. They're on the job, on the clock, and I'm going to get shit if they fuck around and touch stuff they're not supposed to because they can't sit at a desk and smile at the fact they're gainfully employed.

One thing I will say: there are a lot of very low paying jobs that were nonetheless considered “essential” during the pandemic. I’m not opposed to a system that matters some financial amends for workers who are functional infrastructure.

That’s one problem we have in the Bay. The hilarious housing and rent costs mean if you’re making less than 200-300k here per household, you most likely cannot and will never be able to afford a house. Even out here most people by volume don’t make that, so low wage workers are basically fucked if they don’t live at home with their parents or have a bunch of roommates.

I would alter this statement as such, "You can’t have a million dollar dream with a minimum wage work ethic personal responsibility."

It's just another article selling communism to people who never took the personal responsibility to learn any skill that made them have real value. Something the average person cannot do themselves. So they get lumped into minor jobs, jobs that take advantage of them, or the new term they like to use "gig economy," until the communists come and promise to take from those who do have valuable skills and spread it all around.

Yeah, I get it, the job market and overall employment in general sucks, and I figured that out a bit when I decided to walk away from the corporate world. Not that most of what they bitch about ever applied to me, because if your corporate job is of any value all you really have to do is convince everyone you will get whatever shit needed done, and they learn to leave you the hell alone.

When Australia went for zero covid, they shut down all immigration.

Wages went up. Rent went down.

The problem is the super wealthy betraying their own nations via unwanted mass immigration.

Yeah immigration is a huge problem too. I don't think it takes away from the other in that people need to make themselves valuable, but I also can't help but wonder where I'd have gone today if my favorite field (tech) wasn't so saturated with Indians. It basically totally ruined a career choice I grew up on, outside of perhaps consulting--because when it comes time to actually get something really necessary done, the Indians just plain suck.

Ya know, if the thumbnail for the article was a picture of a guy working blue collar job with no A/C in a boiling shop or roasting under the unforgiving sun, I'd drop an ounce of sympathy and maybe try to read something like that to see what's up.

But their path is to point at useless fucking middle aged, middle management white bitches who've never worked a hard day in their lives???

I know communists are subhuman, retarded, rat clawed little fuckwits, but this is still somehow dumber and more out of touch than I had believed them to be.

I don't doubt that a lot of people work more hours than I might find desirable, and the second graph does not exactly refute it, but it's exactly because of the economic growth created by capitalism that we're not working even more hours.

A 7 hour workday with pay per week is way better than 16~20 hour workdays with no pay, no breaks, no food and the death penalty for failing to produce what the stuffed-shirt politburo's quota demands.

Jacobin is retarded, but when you consider that the labor force nearly doubled after the 60's, this isn't as cut and dry as OP is making it sound. You can't complain about how white people aren't having enough kids but then pretend like so much time isn't being wasted on making muh GDP go up.
