The more these attacks happen, the more I pray it's mental illness, because at least there might be efforts to resolve the core of the issue.
It's always mental illness, and then they'll say it's society's fault for not "doing more", which is why they get short sentences if they're sentenced at all.

As a bonus, if a mass killer's schizo ramblings can be tangentially related to anything vaguely "right-wing," they also automatically become white, even if they're half-flip like Elliot Rodgers or half black like Chris Mercer. And even if, frankly, their worldview is far more congruent with a leftist perspective than a conservative one.
