A fun (depressing) exercise is to look at the staff credits from two games from the "same" developer years apart and see how many of the same names you can find.
This is particularly enlightening when you do it with the original Mass Effect and Andromeda or even Mass Effect 3.
Back in the day there was a video of the Modern Warfare 2 credits that crossed off all the names that left to create respawn entertainment. Like half the names were crossed off.
It's stunning how much this is happening in the games industry. Two of the sequels I was actually looking forward to (Payday 3 and Kerbal Space Program 2) had this happen to their studios. PD3's dev had their CEO, CFO, lead artist, lead music guy, and 2/3rds of their coders leave to form a different company. KSP got bought out by Take Two, who promptly fired all but 3 coders.
The talent that made games like Arkham Knight and especially the ones before have retired or doing their own thing. The coasters who hung in the background, probably making the coffee don't have the talent to match so try to pander to leftist ideology to hide their inadequacy.
It has Denzel Washington and Chris Pine as heroes and the oaf from My Name is Earl as the culprit (and of course an old white guy executive caring more about money than people).
But I still enjoyed it. Interesting premise with a runaway train filled with toxic flammable chemicals heading to a fictional population center in Pennsylvania (and loosely based on a true story.

Making a character attractive is a necessary strategy for overcoming the uncanny valley. People are more forgiving of the uncanny valley effect if the character design is pleasing in other ways. If you’re trying to perfectly model a very average looking person, that’s going to combine with the uncanny valley effect to produce an extremely unattractive character.
It’s almost like older devs knew the score and created accordingly.

I would be very curious to go really autistic on this and have a wireframe and UV map to look at. I suspect though this is exactly why these studios like to shroud their development process in complicated mystery as part of their marketing because they don't want people like me making fun of them.
Games made back in 2017 or earlier look better than most games now purely in terms of art skill, change my mind. I think even titles like Fallout 4 still look pretty damn good especially when you compare them to titles like Starfield which Bethesda proudly claimed they'd been working on for how long was it 15 odd years? Maybe more? They even changed the shape of her head for fuck's sake and it's making her look derpy.

Well, they did "recast" her to be based on/look like the Margot Robbie Harley. However I don't think they did a very good job of porting the scanned face over (when do they ever) so she looks... wrong.
The diffuse texture on the right is clearly more flat & less detailed. The lack of quality will obviously transfer over to the normal map. The specular & glossiness is oversaturated which I think was done purposely to hide the flatness of the texture. I think they also fucked up the normal map & specularity so that Harley's feminine curves are less pronounced.
Most likely a deliberate choice by the art production to take shortcuts & stay under budget. When you have to allocate money to a useless consultant firm like Sweet baby Inc, the original product quality will suffer.
There comes a point with computing power where it's less about graphics and more about art skill and It's been really noticeable that art skill has definitely been going backward lately. The way game studios are just adding on computing power to everything to compensate is diminishing returns. We're going to see this as well especially when it comes to them trying to get AI to replace everything.
