It may be in Europe, but that does not make it a first world country. It was a second world country before 1991 (i.e. communist), but unfortunately, right now the miserable failure of the Ukrainian state over the past 30 years has made it decline into the third world.

Well if you know Ukrainian you will understand 95% of Russian as well as a good amount of Slavic family languages.
The point being you will be able to read primary sources rather than others interpretations.

If a Ukrainian wants to volunteer their time for free to localize a game, I have no problem with that. But devs have limited time and resources, and using those to increase their player base by a quarter of one percent is objectively a bad idea.
Yeah they don't usually re-localize English for different dialects, so I'm not sure why they'd do Ukrainian. Most people play games in English anyways, if they understand such. Cuz translated games suck as we know.

Russia is a huge market, even if many of them pirate, enough don't. And Russia isn't the only country that speaks Russian, notably. There's no "Uzbekistanese", or "Czechoslovakiaish". Even east European countries that DO have a language of their own, they often aren't large enough to justify having their own translation, and so go for a language they happen to also know, and the countries that merely include Russian in their set of common languages is even higher.
Or in short: The move to exclude Russian is for virtue signalling, the move to include it is for rational marketing strategy.

It's really a lot more complicated than that. It's definitely a distinct language, which is odd when much of the rest of Russia is standardized.
Most people have family on both sides and definitely don't want them to get killed.

The USSR in fact engaged in a policy of Ukrainianization. One of the many disasters inflicted on the Russian people by that failed political experiment.

I can't speak for generally, but BG3 actually has amazing Ukrainian localization. They actually use ancient Slavic for some of the undead characters.

Ukrainians can read Russian just fine, they are essentially the same language with minor dialectal differences in speech.
It would be like asking for a Norwegian localisation in a Swedish game, they already consume tons of Swedish media whereas Swedes do not consume Norwegian media at all.
It's the same way with Russian and Ukrainian, why would you localise for a smaller language when they are essentially identical except for minor differences.
You could go on forever and ever listing world famous Swedish artists but you would be very hard pressed to even get to five if you were to try the same thing with Norwegian artists, authors, actors etc.
