I certainly can't speak for everyone, by anecdotally every Russian male I know fled. Every Ukrainian guy I know (and some women) stayed to fight.
huh? we're talking about 60 years ago in specific regions of ukraine... not the rest of ukraine that isn't of russian people.
it's why in 2014, putin was able to drive into crimea without any resistance whatsoever... because the people of crimea don't view themselves as ukrainian.
It's really a lot more complicated than that. It's definitely a distinct language, which is odd when much of the rest of Russia is standardized.
Most people have family on both sides and definitely don't want them to get killed.
The Slavic people came from Kyiv, so it might be more fair to say Russia belongs to Ukraine historically.
Regardless, this is an abhorrent brother war that should not have happened.
