The Absolute State of millennial/zoomer “adults”—regarding The Little Mermaid rehash, MSNBC author states: “In my childless household, we’re so excited that my fiance has asked to take my “inner child” on a date to see the film, complete with stopping at the Disney store to pick up an Ariel doll” (archive.is)

Organizations such as Win with Black Women are encouraging Black women entrepreneurs to buy out at least 100 theaters this weekend.

This movie is so good that we need you to pretend it is popular so we won't be embarrassed by poor box office numbers!

Come on, black woman entrepreneuring is so much gentler than white business. It's all about helping out the community.

Rebuttal: I know several business owners who named a woman CEO in name only to get to call themselves a "woman owned business."

I can't imagine it's easy to ignore the temptation to double dip with "Black woman owned business."

this is kind of a non sequitur but there's this actually delicious Vegan Doughnut company on the westside of Cleveland, OH that is black woman owned.

Forget how much there is to unpack in that sentence -- I can't believe I typed it, either. But those black ladies make some delicious vegan doughnuts.

My only criticism of the place is that they struggle to open earlier than "five minutes late."

So yes, they do exist -- but the only one I can think of is a walking pile of idiosyncrasies.

This is why I hate the "they made her black because black people exist" argument. Now they made this shitty remake about themselves. Imagine being so coddled up making sure a shitty rehashed movie from a soulless corpo don't flop is your societal change

Here are some more shit takes from this mainstream propaganda screed:

When I was growing up in the 1990s, the Black girls in my neighborhood had VHS watch parties featuring “The Little Mermaid.” We persuaded our parents to buy us “Little Mermaid’ comforter sets and light-up sneakers, and we obsessed over Ariel. We wanted to be her, even though with her white skin and straight hair she didn’t resemble us at all.

Wow imagine that… identifying with a character that doesn’t need to physically resemble you?? UNBELIEVABLE… who could have thought this kind of advanced level of thinking was even possible???? Dumbass.

That’s not the only reason for the overwhelming excitement. This “Little Mermaid” promises to send a better message to girls. “The Little Mermaid” that my friends and I obsessed over isn’t an empowering tale. After [Ariel] encounters the human, Eric, she trades her beautiful singing voice and mermaid tail for a pair of legs so she can pursue a relationship with him. Her arrangement with the sea witch, Ursula, offers Ariel new beginnings, but she’s also forced to sacrifice all the things that make her who she is for the possible love of a man.

Oh nooooo, somebody falling in love and willing to make sacrifices for that love, instead of wanting to be a 100% self-centered narcissistic bitch like most 2020s women?? DATS UN POSSIBEL!!!1111

Given the updated message in the film, it’s important that Bailey was able to keep her locs, again not sacrificing who she is to play the role: “It was super important for me to have my natural hair in this film. I was really grateful to (director) Rob Marshall, because he wanted to keep my locs,” she told Ebony. “It’s always important to have somebody to cosign. I’ve had my locs since I was 5, so they’re a huge part of who I am. We need to be able to see ourselves, we need to be able to see our hair on big screens like this, so that we know that it’s beautiful and more than acceptable.”

It’s fucking hair. HAIR. This is like a bald old guy saying “I’m so glad they replaced Captain America with a fat old man who is balding like me… WE NEED TO BE ABLE TO SEE OUR (LACK OF) HAIR ON THE BIG SCREEN!!!!111

Yes, Bailey is playing a mermaid, a fictional character, but her portrayal is likely to be a catalyst for those who want to better understand the mythology of Black mermaids and other water spirits across cultures, regions and time periods. There’s Yemaya, goddess of the ocean, who, according to those who practice Santería, created the seven seas. Ariel isn’t a visual embodiment of these deities but Bailey playing her is a prompt to remember that Europeans aren’t the only ones whose culture includes beautiful, feminine water spirits.

Then why the fuck are you hijacking the European version and turning it “Black”??? Why not do a movie about THOSE legends?

This “Little Mermaid” promises to send a better message to girls.

The message from the original tale was even better: don't throw away your life and dignity because of muh tingles, more young women should learn that

Right? Her giving away her voice is an obvious mistake, the story never says it was a good idea. Hell, she can't even properly connect with Eric like that.
Taking away the mistakes she needs to correct and overcome is not making the story better.

At no point has any kid ever actually cared if a superhero or cartoon character looked like them, but lots of racial grievance folks pretend they did.

Blame teachers of English composition. For decades they have been pushing this idea and making it the topic for countless idiotic scribblings by mouth-breathing morons not much more illiterate than themselves.

It's narcissism, plain and simple.

I'll bet plenty of people here who suffered through freshman comp had to write to this stupid idea: "If it ain't on teevee it don't exist."

The politics and shittiness of this movie aside, I'm also tired of these forever children. I have no problem with an adult having interest in a kids movie, or really most any media aimed below their age. The difference is they make it a part of their identity. They've never grown up. As far as I'm concerned you're never an adult if you define yourself relative to a fictional fantasy world.

This is why the small evil voice in my head is rooting for a really dire economic crash. I have extended family on both sides with farms and ranches that I can escape to so I'd probably be fine.

A world wide financial apocalypse washing all these crazy people away may be the only thing that saves society

She's a full on normie so I expect this to be the average real reaction. They could make so much fucking cash if they weren't cultists.. but here we are
