I'm torn on this. On one hand, yeah, there's plenty of psychopaths around that'll destroy children and young adults given any chance.

I disagree. Transformers' sexual dimorphism doesn't make sense in-universe, but in the absence of primary sexual characteristics I'd still be fine with referring to sexless non-humans as "he" or "she" and not "they" or "it" - even for someone like a Bolo, who is just a sapient ultraheavy tank and has no secondary sexual characteristics either.

You just load it with something other than liquid fuel. A flamethrower loaded with, for instance napalm, can be shot to pieces and never actually detonate.
