Damn, people have described modernity as the beginning of “the post-truth era” but I guess I finally have to admit it’s here. Granted, if AI images are being used to spread agendas on social media, I’m sad to admit I don’t think that agenda-spreaders really need to go through all that effort. You can get half the world to believe what you want just by saying it in a snappy way and sticking the words on a picture of the Minions.

hell, even very online people will regularly fall for fake quotes/social media posts, the kind of stuff it takes 10 seconds to verify with Google. how do you verify something like this? especially if it's regime-supported propaganda?

You see it all the time in the news. How often some hit piece's sole source is an "anonymous source" or some unnamed "expert says".

AI generated images are just an evolution of existing propaganda. Instead of staging actors with makeup, they can now just use an AI. The horrifying part is how discreet it allows things to be. One of the drawbacks to faking things in the past is that the more people involved, the more likely someone is to spill the beans. With AI, very few humans need to be in the loop. It's the same perk as automating any other tasks, removing human error.

Thanks. The tweet thread was very strange to follow.

This woman copied a picture of the original tweet - I don't know why people do that but I guess it's good she did because the guy deleted the original.

According to an online translator the screenshot says "These pictures from yesterday's protest are crazy and for once @OdieuxBoby didn't take them. Reform of. #Retraites".

Anthony @WebCrooner seems to be a fan of network security and AI image generation and has posted a lot of fake pictures as well as links to articles on how dangerous AI is and how people need to avoid getting scammed. On his timeline he deleted his tweet but retweeted tweets of people tweeting screenshots of his original tweet.

The next day he retweeted a story by @france3Bretagne. "Il génère des images via #IA pour #sensibiliser aux effets pervers des robots. Un Breton ouvre un débat qui buzz sur Twitter. https://bit.ly/40NaiHA #disinformation #AI #ReformeDesRetraites"

That link goes to an article showing how the pics were generated with Midjourney by a Breton "to raise awareness of the perverse effects of AI."

“The three images were not taken during the demonstration against the pension reform. I generated them on the Net", explains Anthony. "My goal is to raise awareness of the questions posed by images generated by robots... I wanted to do two tweets, says Anthony. A first with my three photos, then a second indicating that it was a fake”. The plan did not go as planned. “Immediately the photographer I had identified in my tweet, Odieux Boby, the alias of Boris Allin, saw that it was a fake and indicated it in a message."

Anthony preferred to delete his initial message on twitter, “so as not to leave false images on the web”. Its objective of talking about the risks with false images has been achieved.

Twitter is fucking weird.

You gotta work on it a bit to get hands correct. The issue is mostly that AI just cannot learn the concept of hands since artists also suck at hands(me included, I hate drawing hands with a passion), you sometimes just do not see how hands are supposed to look in certain positions. I am surprised someone's not done an embedding with good hands or something but I doubt that would help much.

Thankfully inpainting or outright photoshop can fix most issues with hands.

The issue is mostly that AI just cannot learn the concept of hands

My theory is that the AI has a single concept of "finger" rather than individual concepts of "pinky finger", "ring finger", etc. So it knows that 75% of the time it should put another finger below the current finger, but doesn't understand that there should be a pinky finger below the ring finger and no finger below the pinky finger.

I think one issue is that fingers are often obscured by objects or other fingers, so the AI would have to actually understand the scene to know how many fingers should be visible. If you only trained it on images with all five fingers visible it would draw exactly five every time.

Other issue is it can't do math. It can't learn there are no more than five fingers because it doesn't know what five means.

I'm wondering if the hands are a psy-op. It can't be that hard of a problem to fix, but now they'll have people believing they've got a way to find if something is fake or not at a glance. Also, you can cast doubt by releasing a picture with correct hands, or incorrect hands, to sow doubt over which was the real picture to start with.

Pretending there's a trick to find the truth just makes lying easier.

Reminds me a bit of 'The Capture.' It was woke, diverse, British, and the ending was absolutely retarded (so retarded that that's the only reason I remember the show), but brought up some interesting points. Seems very relevant now with the 'rise' of AI.

This is an intentional but self-justifying hoax, wherein @WebCrooner made these images and posted them claiming they were photographs by someone else. Article in French about it here, even though French is a waste of time.
