Ok but that was the book. GRRM shouldn’t have approved the race swap especially since he described them in great detail. If they were so hard pressed to have black people make up a show around the Summer Isles. The whole “needs to reflect the modern world” is such an idiotic explanation and shows you have no creativity. Make your own show with all the diversity you want.

Dude, a fantasy show about various African folklore would be great and probably sell like hot cakes but the studios know they'll get more views by race-swapping established lore and characters. It's honestly kind of sad.

Yep. I mean every culture has some sort of folklore or mythology. But as long as diversity is valued over good stories this will continue. I would say I’ll read the book but I’m still mad at GRRM for taking forever on main series

And don’t forget giving young black people a reason to be oppressed despite living in a country that millions risk their lives to get to. It would be problematic because if you look up any African kingdom/ruler they are guilty of the same things on some scale as the things they demonize the west about i.e. slavery/land conquest

I would argue they are guilty on a greater scale since they were doing it for far longer.

True. I meant that some were more successful than others.

Further, they're never going to allow blacks any kind of identity other than oppressed descendants of slaves. They do not want to lose their golem by instilling some kind of moral or ethical racial pride.

So maybe the "we wuz kangz" types are trying to break free from that, but in an irrational way?

Potentially based.

They're trying to do so but they hobble any sort of true independence by their own strongly held tenants.

"we wuz kangs" immediately calls forth the question of who the "current kings" are. They would probably say whites. Everything about their conception of themselves is in relation to whites. Self-imposed subservience because they focus so much on what the evil white men did and "continues" to do that they don't look at what they themselves are doing to lift themselves up.

Sad!

The fact they haven't done it tells you they don't think it would do well. Black panther only killed it because it was shoehorned into an existing cinematic universe which at the time, if you missed a movie meant you wouldn't get something in another flick. As a standalone movie BP would never have done well commercially and everyone knows it.

LotR was as good as we'll ever get to a real adaptation. It was well planned, meticulously detailed, and a labor of love from everybody involved. This article just blew it off as "a bunch of white people on the screen."

It doesn't matter if it's a good series or loved by billions, to the woke left it's just more grist for the mill. They have no reverence, no respect, no humility. They just want to take everything and leave no space for any other opinions but their own. It's all just dirt to be paved over.

LotR was as good as we'll ever get to a real adaptation.

It was made with genuine love for the source material. It is a real adaptation, unlike that Chinese bootleg copy of a show Amazon made.

And I’m sick of fans of the books getting crap for wanting an accurate depiction or at least an attempt at an accurate depiction.

It’s at the point I don’t even bother, game of thrones after season 5 was so horrendous that it killed any interest in the adaptation of books anymore, so far I haven’t been proven wrong.

Plus it's clear the books themselves are never going to be finished so there's no reason to care about the setting at all. There are far better grimdark fantasies out there made by people who can actually come up with a satisfying conclusion and are willing to actually write it. You have to be realistic.

My personal favorite is Joe Abercrombie's work. His Circle of the World setting starts with The Blade Itself and consists of 3 completed trilogies and a short story collection.

Michael Moorcock's Elric of Melniboné saga was one of the most influential works in the grimdark fantasy movement.

Was that the season with the 'Sons of the Harpy' shit in Mareen? I always felt like something was 'off' about that season, like they were wasting my time with stupid plots that made no sense. Yeah I'm not gonna believe that a bunch of fat merchants were willing to suicidally attack a bunch of trained soldiers and somehow fucking win, literally charging with no regard for their lives like a bunch of insane zombies. That was so goddamn stupid and for me that was the moment the show jumped the shark.

I know but I’d be lying if I said I’m not going to be pre-ordering Winds of Winter when it’s announced. Although GRRM got mad because fans keep asking about that book and they don’t care as much about his other projects. Thankfully there are other more reliable authors.

Season 5 was where atrocious as well. Wasn't that the season with Jaime and Bronne's trip to Dorne?

Seasons 1-4 are solid imo.

Books are always better.

Nothing can compete with your imagination. Unless you're one of the many left-wingers with aphantasia and are literally unable to conceptualize original thought.

Agreed. I get that you can’t perfectly adapt a book but they don’t even try to adapt the spirit of the story. Wheel of Time showrunner is a primary example of totally bastardizing a story to inject his personal crap

I dunno. I read the LOTR as a kid and loved it. I tried to re-reading it like twenty years later, and I honestly couldn't get through the second book. I don't know, it felt like it was wasting so much of my time. There's just insanely long stretches of absolute nothing.

When I read a story, I must take time afterwards to reflect upon it. I read it, but I don't really "read" it in full until I go back over it in my mind.

Tolkein was not a good writer. He was a great writer, but not a good one. His pacing is awful, his story beats are irregular, and his narrative focus meanders like a drunken Irishman.

But he built a world. A new world. A world that, as a child, you did not experience before. You went back and reflected on the story. No reference points, no preconceptions. You experienced a whole new world. Some parts were oddly paced, but as a child, those were times you'd be imagining the rest of the world.

Now? Jaded, experienced with carefully crafted narratives, colored by the movies' pacing. You're probably not leaning back after reading it, imagining being in that world. The book has not changed, but you have. You're observing the flaws, noticing the story beats.

But as you yourself stated, as a kid, you loved it. Prior to that movie set, prior to adding new preconceptions, you loved it.

Pompous reply aside, that second book is a slog at times, for sure. Weakest of the trilogy.

If they're all white at least the plotline that the King refuses to acknowledge that Rhyneris (sp?) children are bastards makes some sense.

As it is the plot makes absolutely no sense. The sheer stupidity takes you out of it.

It changes the intended motivations, personalities, everything. From a king who is maybe naïve, or too trusting, or willing to play some theatre as long as there's a drop of doubt, to a king who is mad, or delusional, or a despot who demands his subjects ignore the obvious truth.

I don't see the problem with black people in a fantasy world where there's big-ass deserts. It's pretty reasonable to assume that these people evolve similarly to humans. Like isnt that what melanin is supposed to help with?
