As it is the plot makes absolutely no sense. The sheer stupidity takes you out of it.
It changes the intended motivations, personalities, everything. From a king who is maybe naïve, or too trusting, or willing to play some theatre as long as there's a drop of doubt, to a king who is mad, or delusional, or a despot who demands his subjects ignore the obvious truth.
