I used to know a guy at Capcom a while back who said they had Japanese translation managers who barely knew any English correcting the native English translators on their lines. When he would push back and tell the Japanese managers their suggestions weren't gramatically correct, they would respond "It doesn't matter, writing it this way sounds more cool."
I used to think that was weird but now I totally get it and wouldn't mind the unlocalized Engrish.
I guess thats the one good thing about digimon game translations.
Some of the lines may be "All your base belongs to us" level, but the only agenda being pushed is having fun.

I studied Japanese for 8 years. I get that some translations need to take liberties with certain words that aren’t translatable. But I don’t get how you get from Yatsura to Incel without it being your own bias at play.
And they wonder why they’re criticised.
It doesn't look like , at least for some, they are trying to hide the fact that they are biased. One of them says, paraphrasing, "Why not do it and add our own flare to it?". Their argument is why only translate for those "in the know" which is a flippant statement demonstrating that they don't care if it's accurate or not.
I understand why they do make some changes though, because half the time the chick with boobies being censored is listed as 12 years old. They usually change that to 18, but then you still have the fact that she looks 12.
SJW stuff in translations is inexcusable, but I completely get a lot of the other stuff. Many times it’s to allow it to be released at all.
Other times things are changed to fit words into the timeframe and mouths of spoken dialog, which is even harder.
The best way to enjoy foreign works is probably to teach people a little about the culture in the process. Maybe throw in a Japanese word or two like nakama. And let things be weird.
Some translations and dubs are superior to the originals, like Dragon Ball.
Yeah, I get it. I've tried doing some scanlation stuff in my time so I understand as to why certain things get changed or where you need to take liberties.
But I frown upon people putting their own politics in the mouths of others and this is the perfect example of that. Your job should be to tell the story that keeps in best accordance with the artists original intent. Even if you disagree with that intent.
To me, it's kind of an insult to the original artist and their work.

It's much worse than that: people who enjoy foreign mediums consume it because it's different. If they wanted more of what's familiar, they could just watch any old crap that's easily and readily available from their own country.
This is why I despise the "wider audience" bullshit. They are depriving the opportunity for both the original fans to watch what they wanted, and potential new fans of finding something unique.
Agreed. Even then, I actually prefer leaving the joke in and explaining it elsewhere (like an editor's note); I end up learning something new and can better appreciate similar jokes later.
I enjoy reading translation notes because I get to learn about a different culture and language. That's half the fun of foreign media.
As someone who is a Japanese to English translator I could rant about this endlessly. The average translator of Japanese media is pretty much a radical communist. The only thing on the top section of this that even makes sense and holds any water is part of Steiner's section. Indeed, the vast majority of translators don't hate the works. But the conclusions that he reaches are retarded. Just cause most dont hate them, doesn't mean they don't strive to change them "for the greater good."

While I dont think most of them inject bullshit out of hatred of the original works, the fact remains they live in a fabricated reality lala land that radicalizes them to feel the need to inject their shitty ideologies into translations where they have no business being.
