He destroyed star trek by turning it into a star wars style movie. Then he destroyed star wars by turning it into I don't even know.

He even made some bs statement at the time that he didn't really like Star Trek and wanted it to be more like Star Wars. I feel like he got a lucky break that the first one was still somewhat decent, and that came only because the Actors were type cast so well.

His whole history comes down to writing "mystery box" hooks into everything he makes. All of his success is appreciated by Hollywood because he sees returns on his stuff installment to installment, not because it's any good. (See also: *Lost, Westworld)

At the end of the day, he thinks of himself as a magician, touting the secret up his sleeve as he manipulates audiences into staying until the end to see what it is, then at the finale theres a puff of smoke and a huge turd slides out.

Uhh, Kathleen Kennedy said there wasn't any reference material for them to work with.

Are you opposing the viewpoint of a woman, bigot? For the love of science you better not be mansplaining to her.

Some of the books sucked, but there was a lot of great material in the EU that they unceremoniously removed from canon.

A Thrawn trilogy would have been great, but they waited too long to make it. All the major characters were too old. It should been made a few years after Revenge of the Sith.

I can't comprehend the scale of stupidity of Disney Star Wars. They spent over a billion dollars purchasing the IP, then spent hundreds of millions of dollars making and advertising each movie, and they didn't have a concrete plan in place for the individual stories, the story arcs, the characters, the character arcs, the writing, the lore, basic production stuff, directors, etc., that was reviewed, edited, checked, tested, verified, and confirmed by hundreds of people before they even purchased the IP, or even before making the movies. They just decided to wing it, and no one was fired for the gargantuan failures.

The money and manpower wasted is incredible. It certainly paints the people responsible for this in bright poisonous colors, and to properly describe their faults would be more effort than I wish to exert.

Iger probably thought Kennedy was going to behave like another Spielberg because she mentored under, you know, Spielberg. Turns out she was a radical feminist playing the long game. Credit where credit is due; most feminist women are far too emotionally incontinent to run a long con of this magnitude.

Can't just blame Iger. I think this falls on Lucas too. Didn't he recommend her?

Kennedy produced Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. She was "co-chair" of LucasFilm before the sale to Disney.

They built a Star Wars land at Disney World. Did they base it around the films and characters that have been loved by fans for over forty years? Nope, it's all about the Disney Trilogy.

Which makes no sense.

There's no copyright on the concept of space wizard adventures.

If you want to make a big space wizard adventure... Do it. If you want a space adventure theme park... Do it.

I've got no idea why they'd buy the IP, then basically do nothing with it. It's like they wanted it, specifically just to stifle competition in the market, in the off-chance LucasFilm made another space wizard adventure that would compete with theirs.

As a lifelong EU reader I’ll never understand why they didn’t loosely adapt Thrawn Trilogy or New Jedi Order or use Lucas’s treatments.

How to resolve that plot-hole:

"But... How are you alive?! I saw, you were stabbed in the gut with a lightsaber!"

"It's not too hard to live through a lightsaber stab, it cauterizes the wounds as it inflicts them. It is just incredibly painful. Here, let me show you!"

Done. Literally one line of dialogue, now you can re-use your villain who was "killed".

I dunno.... some of the theories behind it kinda make too much sense... but I dunno

If that truly was his plan, I actually would think it would have been worth making jarjar THAT bad in the first movie.

And if it was the plan, then him just backing that off instead of sticking with it made it a sorta unredeemable thing. IF that theory had gone through, you could have looked back at movie 1 jarjar as some hardcore troll with a great payoff. Now looking back it just is a sucky character that pads screentime in the most obnoxious way.

Yep, that's the movies I would have loved to have seen. An "incompetent" troll who turns out to be the most clever, manipulative bastard to roll down the pike since David Xanatos - only more genuinely cold-blooded murdery.

Jar Jar was meant to be the comic trope for the kids to enjoy. A lot of kids did indeed enjoy Jar Jar Binks. Episode One was both a telling of the story that Lucas promised decades prior and also a chance to capture a new generation of fans who likely got their first tastes of the story with the remasters that were issued a few years prior.

Even without all the hatred that spawned toward Binks, his shift to the sidelines in Episode 2 and 3 felt organic at least, given that the second and third acts of the trilogy were more serious in tone and nature.

The whole problem with the "mystery box" philosophy is you have to put something in the box to find

permalink save report block reply
▲ 9 ▼
– Seruna_Kanus 9 points 5 years ago +9 / -0

Seriously. Disney should have put up a storyboard or outline for the trilogy. First movie must have these points. Second movie must have these points. Third must have these. Overall 3 act system with 3 sub-acts per movie. Major points must lead to one another organically. Whoever directs which movie can have some creativity but the main design must be met.

They should have set up some foreshadowing in the first and second films regarding major points in the last. Instead the first was basically click bait, the second film was disjointed and the third had no real connections.

wasn't it mostly ruin jhonson subverting everyones expectation that lead to the rise of skywalker being something so asinine i haven't even got around to pirate it yet?

TFA wasn't overly terrible it just re-trod a a lot of ground then TLJ came out fucked everything because ruin jhonson thinks he's clever leaving some poor sod to figure out how the fuck this is all supposed to end

perhaps having a rough cut of the story of all 3 at the start might have helped (let someone tell ruin to go away with his subverting of our expectations)

but then again its all modern disney so it probably would have all turned out crap anyway

at least mark Hamill seems to hate what they did with his character (as opposed to what Patrick Stewart let them do with Picard)

Finally, someone who actually watched TFA. There really isn't anything in that movie that truly ruins SW. Killing Han before a reunion could happen is sad but it actually adds some real emotion to the story.

TLJ is what murdered SW. Coming back from that colossal fuckup would've been next to impossible and I think that's why JJ said fuck it and just went crazy on the last one. I can't confirm since I refuse to watch it.

That and the total character assassination of Luke Skywalker. There's nothing in Luke's character post RotJ that would lead to the Luke we see in TLJ. It's like Johnson stopped watching SW mid way through ESB and then wrote TLJ.

The Original Trilogy had a plan by Lucas, but there were many, many changes made by several people along the way. Somehow this history became warped into "the OT was made film by film out of sheet creative spontaneity". I'm sure they tried to seriously emulate this exaggerated version of events, which is why you basically had JJ and Rian fixing each other's films.

Re-file under "You don't fucking say?" If you're going into something planning to do a trilogy, you'd damn well better know what the endgame is for the whole arc before you start plotting book one of the series. Even if you're planning on "subverting expectations" from prior work, you still need to know what the final chapter of the whole thing looks like so you can maintain internal consistency in the narrative across multiple sections of the story. Only a hack goes into trying to build a story without having some idea of where it's going to go, because otherwise you end up with a meandering, meaningless storyline that ends up being less than fulfilling for the reader/viewer.

If KK hadn't thrown the baby out with the bathwater on the EU, and Disney had just sucked it up and paid the writers the royalties like they should have, they could have had the perfect followup trilogies from Zahn's books. Granted, the would have either had to have made them animated (since the original crew had long since out-aged the time frame of the books) or re-cast the parts with a younger set of actors, but the Thrawn series pretty much IS the sequel in most fan's minds.
