It took that town in Louisiana almost a decade to split from the capital. So I'm guessing 25+ years to split a state unless something drastic happens.

If you're referring to the situation I think you are the answer is yes but the situation is completely different. That was a purely intrastate affair, so only state law applied. Under the Constitution getting this done would require the approval of the Oregon and Idaho state legislatures as well as Congress. Idaho's legislature is the only one that would realistically approve of this.
Congress might approve it too, it's really on Oregon not wanting to lose their most valuable people: Non-Portlanders.
They're more likely to approve it than Oregon, but I still wouldn't bet on it. The Dems wouldn't want any electoral votes getting transferred from Oregon to Idaho. Cheating their way to 270 keeps them occupied as it is.
It would have a negligible impact on electoral votes. It might take 1 EV away from Oregon and give it to Idaho.
The reason that congress would fight it (if they choose to) is simply to send the message saying "sit down, shut up and keep quietly getting fleeced you silly sheep". Though, doubt it will even come to that as the state legislator will be screaming that message to stop anything from happening.

Yeah Congress would have their own opinions based on precisely how this impacts Fed politics, which I don't know. I suppose if Idaho is conservative and Idaho gets bigger and thus more influential, then the impact is pro-conservative. A conservative Congress might then approve it. Similarly, if it ends up shifting a seat or something in the direction of the Democrats, maybe they could be talked into it.
At the Federal level probably not, because this sounds to me like DC becoming a state. It has political effects, primarily pro-Democrat. DC never becomes a state.

The basic gist of that kerfuffle boiled down to the area wanting to have their own schools and not send their kids to the shitholes in Baton Rogue to be abused by feral blacks.
Baton Rogue basically said 'hah hah fuck no you're not a city get fucked and be a good little pay pig'.
The area basically replied 'WELL THEN' and started off the entire process of turning an unincorporated area into it's own city.
Cue alot of legal screaming because, all of a sudden, this area was really fucking important FOr sOme reaSON(money), several rounds of voting, legal challenges, and here we are now.
For Oregon, it's not like a portion of a previous state getting turned into it's own area isn't unprecedented(West Virginia), but that required, well, an active shooting war.

The problem is they're going to pussyfoot around with doing this "legally". And it won't work, because there's no real legal mechanism for it (and if there is, Oregon would have to consent, and they won't, or it has to be congressional, and they won't consent either).
The reality is they have to do this by force... simply move the signs for Idaho to their new border. Stop paying anything to Oregon and set up with the state of Idaho to shift taxes, fees, licensing over. Just act like you're part of Idaho and don't ask permission.
I doubt they'll do that.

You can't vote your way out of tyranny.
This is why a bunch of people wouldn't sign the Constitution without the Bill of Rights. I don't think the initial form of American government was supposed to last this long. I think the framers thought that eventually the system would fail, and they wanted the populace to be free in a way that would enable them to dodge tyranny in the aftermath of government failure. The idea is essentially that free people would continue to demand freedom, no matter which kind of government organization came out of the next Revolution.
I think they imagined revolutions would be a more frequent thing, like France or something.
People tend to focus on the 2A as the core of freedom, however I'd argue that our other freedoms like association are more fundamental for resistance to tyranny. The entire package fortifies us.
I don't think it'll go through just for the fact nobody wants to pay to redraw state lines. Looking at the map of the counties, there is a huge awkwardness with the county lines, with some strictly Oregon counties still being within the proposed Greater Idaho. That's a lot of land and property to move, sell, etc.
13 counties making 10% of the population voting in favor at 53%. Unfortunately, the rest of Oregon will probably just Occam's Razor it and tell the 5.3% of the population that wants to join Idaho to move to Idaho themselves.
That may very well be the excuse they use, but the real reason is leftists see everyone else as plebs and feel entitled to rule them. It's why they went scorched earth on Trump, why they stole the 2020 election, and why they kept pushing for more Brexit referendums until they got the result they wanted. They just don't believe in self determination for anyone but themselves.
I hope Illinois counties start doing this with Missouri or Indiana.
This gets promised every few years and nothing happens. I would love to have the Blues in Idaho, but I highly doubt it would happen.

I'm sure that there is a good answer to this question but in terms of legal difficulty wouldn't it be just as troublesome for them to instead form their own state? They are talking about a huge swath of territory anyway.
BTW, I believe there is a better solution to all of this. Bring the Electoral College system to the state level. That will stop the blue egalitarian collectivist types from destroying the rest of the state and they will still have the economic power of scales of economy for being a city center.
It avoids a political difficulty associated with creating a state which is 2 senators. When it comes to making DC a state, that's a feature for Democrats. Presumably, 2 more conservative senators (from West Idaho) would make them unhappy. By shifting counties, you in theory perturb the power state less. Though, as I speculated above, with every +1 counting for so much these days, I'm sure Washington would be full of opinions.
Good argument, I wish we would go back to when it was the legislature of the state that selected senators but without the issues that they had before it became a public election process.
If you combine that with a state level Electoral College system we would have a totally different country at this point.
Yeah I agree that the Senate was supposed to be a different body; not just a House with different makeup. It was supposed to be kind of a house of lords but without the nobility. It would be people of the political class to sort of tamp down populism. That's a good idea; I don't know why they undid it.
Yeah it would bring us more in line with being a republic and not a democracy which is what we are supposed to be in the first place.

Immigrants, who constitute the only population growth in the USA, basically only move to cities. Traditional Americans have also moved from the country to suburbs and cities. Despite some white flight towards exurbs and farther, it's basically old people sticking it out in the country. The young people born in the country want to move to a city. After working a career in the city, people want to retire out in red country.
Snohomish has tried breaking away from King, and still gets ruled over. It took forever for them to get a snow plow of their own. SNO is in the name!
