Soldiers seem to have no problem finding women. However, they have significant problems keeping those women after marriage. I work in a company that works closely with the military and often hires those who are/were military spouses. I work with multiple women who got married very early (one was 19 years old) and divorced their enlisted husbands after having kids.
Divorce is frighteningly common in the military and military-adjacent workplaces, and it disgusts me. It is treated as status quo for the women.
They were sent by their parents to hang out at the gates of the base and pick up whatever they could. That newly minted E1 thinks he has life together with his training and steady paycheck. It's a match made in camo heaven.
For dating sure, BA matters because for dating the women is gauging how much money you have to waste on her. For fucking, she doesn't care about your BA. All that matters then is physical appearance.
The scouts were losing money anyway. They would charge $200-$300 for a uniform, plus entry fee, and then any award would be $10-$30 just to grab. Most of the camps were actually owned by churches who donated the land.
Then you have the people who work in it. The traditionalists get angry if you're 20 miles in the backhills and use a phone to recognize a berry. Then they demand to know what I would do if I was deep in the woods without a phone, what would I do? Why don't I teach the 10 year olds the entirety of the constitutional system in the US for a single point on a badge with 20 requirements? Why aren't the kids happy like he was in the 70's.
The other half are moms who think their kids are the most important thing since the discovery of sex. Why doesn't my boy pass the requirement to build something on his own when it's a stick nailed to another stick. What do you mean you saw me nailing the sticks together? Yeah I'd like a up to date but localised version, have survival training but also focused on the surrounding environment of how best to use and manage it as well as if it's America, firearm training and proper handling techniques.

The very basic academic requirements along with the physical fitness requirements are a major reason they're having trouble recruiting. A lot of the people who do want to sign up have to be turned away for those reasons. I read a while back that they have a special program that tries to help these flunkies get to a point where they can pass the tests. The physical fitness part isn't a bad idea, but IQ is a hard limit on what people can do academically, so that part is pointless. Especially since the academic requirements are ridiculously low to begin with.
