Sanitise the media, make past work reflect 'current sensibilities' than provide context to the viewer, erase all sense of the past, erase any sense of the morality and traditions past on from generation to generation.

"Providing context to the viewer" is how this started.

The context should just be the date of when the film was made, that's it.

Game of Thrones has entered the chat…

Breaking Bad has entered the chat…

And those are just two, very successful recent series, by that company, lol…

Point being: this isn't a particularly good take.

That's just... Not the reality. I admit, those things are rarer to see, now (particularly rape of a non-white woman, or by a non-white male, let's say), but your comment is... Incorrect. At least if we are going by cable shows of the last decade or so...

recent

Breaking Bad 2008

Game of Thrones started 2011 and went to 2019 and infamously became terrible as it dragged on.

The clown world clock reset in 2016. Give us some more recent examples.

Good grief. HBO Max has made me start getting physical media again. I’m even tempted to get a VCR and buy vhs for cheap.

Hell, even cassette tapes are making somewhat of a comeback (yes, really), because they are exceedingly cheap, and easy for local “indie” bands to release without having to wait for vinyl presses and the like…

Cassette tape with a link to find and download the matching digital/MP3 files - that’s what a lot of these indie bands are doing now. So that’s… Interesting.

I guess my yard sale hunting for older media will continue if they keep this ever advancing march of today-ism to sanitize everything they find.

It didn't make me want to smoke then, and it doesn't now.

It's weird, the same people that want to remove cigs from movies also want to inject race swaps and child porn.

Then it becomes not so weird when you remember it's about destroying culture, not about "discouraging smoking."

They know they're doing it, and they don't care.

Those that are just following along know they're doing it, and they don't care either.

Smoking, in this context, represents sort of “old school macho values”. That, I suspect, is why they want it gone. Not because they actively care about preventing smoking…

But it also represents “freedom”, and we know how much they hate that, lol…

FYI, guys, in India this was the norm, with all movie scenes containing smoking (but in an even more clunky way. It particularly made Titanic utterly unwatchable. I remember that much) literally a decade ago. And it made zero difference to smoking rates.

It’s just that the West has… Finally caught up to India, in oppressive, sad bullshit like that…

High school students having sex and doing hard drugs within their original programming: just fine.

I think the tobacco business was too based for Hollywood. The companies that make cigarettes are very old fashioned and based in the South. They had their death warrant signed anyways, and their customers tend to be older, so there was little incentive for them to cooperate with globohomo. That which they cannot control they will destroy, or hasten to destroy in this case.

They're doing it purely to normalize the culture of editing old art to new sensibilities.

Oh, and for the CCP.

I give zero shits if this breaks some kind of rule or whatever: This is why media archival is important. I'd say get it physical, but that gives these fucks money half the time. Pirate that shit and make sure it's the original stuff. Historical revisionism is one of the worst things out there, and should be condemned in all measures.

I've got a bunch of my faves on DVD, with a few terabytes of films on hard-drive. The only reason I "have" Netflix and others is because I don't pay for it, the rest of my family shares the account and I can see shit if I absolutely must away from home, and most times I don't even do that, because I can do literally anything else.

But yeah, preserve originals, because this shit is only going to get more and more common.

That was because Columbine happened just before the movie's release.

Still stupid to do, though.

I'd say get it physical, but that gives these fucks money half the time.

Physical also has a real problem of damage over time slowly destroying it. Not a real problem for pure archival purposes, but if you intend to also enjoy the work it'll slowly whittle it down. And even if you don't slow degradation can still effect some physical works.

That's why its always important to not only have a physical copy, but then locally back it up digitally to maintain it.

– AccountWasFree 1 point 3 years ago +1 / -0

Digital can still have the same problems. A hard-drive goes and there's a reasonable chance it won't be recoverable. Ideally, multiple points of storage is the solution, both physical and digital, but that's not really practical for the vast majority of people.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 2 ▼
– Adamrises 2 points 3 years ago +2 / -0

Of course, but its a lot easier to have multiple digital backups simply because harddrives will continue to be produced, thereby allowing you to have backups on your backups for cheap and minimal space. Whereas the physical likely has long stopped being made and will only increase in price, making it very hard to replace any broken bits.

Point being, backup and then have more backups. Physical is great, but time and physics will do its thing to them so actually using them is not always ideal.

You can make more physical backups, DVD burning isn't exactly the hardest thing to get into (compared to decades gone by with things like VHS), but I do get what you mean.

This kind of censorship leads to generations who don't know why something was bad enough to be censored in the first place.

At least ET was somewhat intended for a young audience. Most of where they're applying the cigarette thing is geared towards movies that were always made with adults in-mind.
