Fun little tidbit: the gas crisis in Germany might lead to the last remaining glass smelter for solar panels in Europe to shut down, possibly for good because you can't just turn them off and on again. No glass no solar panels.
You're being far too generous here. Whilst I agree they're a bunch of short-sighted idiots, the direct consequences of their actions will not directly effect them in any meaningful way. "Build back better" requires destroying the current system first. They don't care, because they think that only their opponents and the peasants will suffer for their actions.
If the electrification was preceded by an "expanding and upgrading the grid and investing in nuclear"-type message, all this :saving the planet" posturing would've been more believable.
As it is this just seems like a money scheme, manufacturers see a public opinion shift and decide to cash in, especially huge groups like VW with a reputation stained by their emissions cheating. Some only make an electric to drag down their average emissions across their fleet. And besides battery production being everything but clean, China is making money on this, so a lose-lose situation.
If they actually wanted to go clean(er) , hydrogen would've been the logical option. Besides using oil or gas to make it, you could use water and electricity (nuclear would come in handy) but i guess there's less money in that...
Considering the one of the biggest changes "for the environment" was the creation of carbon credits, which is just a giant money scheme for corporations to abuse without much tangible result, its always been a scam from the government.

Hydrogen is terrible. About a third the end to end efficiency of electric, and you pay at the pump just like gas.
Compressed Natural Gas let you fill up at home if you had a natural gas hookup, was cleaner burning than gasoline or diesel, and had the benefit of actually being in production since they were popular as fleet vehicles, though you had to want a Civic or an F150.
The main drawback was the tanks went out of cert after 10 years and were expensive to replace.
Best upgrade the aging and rubbish grid then. Once you drive a Tesla, there's no going back.

I don't believe you. Electric car charges don't use that much power, and they can be set to charge at night when the grid has a lot of slack.
IDK about replacing ALL regular cars, which isn't going to happen for decades, but just doubling them wouldn't cause the grid to collapse.
Teslas are about 0.25 kwh per mile. If you have a 20 mile commute, that is 5 kwh a day. Household kwh usage in California is already 6,000 per year.
The only stress on the grid comes from peak times, usually driven by air conditioning. Cars aren't charging at those times. They charge during the day when there is a solar power generation glut, or at night after demand falls off when people go to sleep.

Similar happened in a suburb of my hometown when cable was first introduced (1984). Since all wires had to be buried there, there had to be above-ground interfaces, which wound up looking vaguely like dicks with gonorrhoea to people with active imaginations. These attracted .. some hostility.

The whole "waste argument" also ignores how much useable fuel can be recycled. Imagine taking a single sip out of a jug of milk and then chucking the rest of it into the trash; that is effectively what people are suggesting. Leave it to Jimmy Carter to fuck the dog on that one and scrap America's nuclear waste recycling program. Also fuck shows like The Simpsons for making people think nuclear waste is glowing, green goo stored in leaky barrels. If these chucklefucks cared about actually solving the issue, they would look at funding research to turn it into something harmless instead of sending literally billions to Ukraine.
