Communities like gaming, sports, etc. have been officially released:
- https://thedonald.win/p/11S0gNqiGM/whats-next-plans-expansions-comm/
I'll keep an eye on them, but I prefer smaller communities like this and even Half-KIA. On that note: what are you playing right now?
Doom Eternal was surprisingly meh, so I went back to Doom 2016.
It has the superior soundtrack anyway
Smoking a bowl and then firing up doom eternal only to be subjected to that weird siren sounding options screen theme music was just a tragedy
I don't know, I'm pretty anti-weed but it doesn't really come up for discussion much.
Likely because most of us who smoke here don't make it a part of our personalities like some do.
Yeah I was hyped for Doom Eternal and tried it last month and didn't really like it. Starting playing Doom 2016 again right after to see if I just changed tastes and ended up replaying most of it. Eternal just isn't the same.
What didn’t you guys like about it? I though it was even better than 2016, way faster, more reflex based. 2016 was great but it was still a pretty standard progression based FPS, albeit a great example of one, but I though Eternal really elevated things.
It didn't have the same crunch as 2016. The ammo situation combined with everything having specific weaknesses to eighteen kinds of alternate fire...there was just too much going on. The beauty of of Doom 2016 was that I could sit down and relax with it as I plowed through the hordes of Hell while embodying the defiant attitude that Doom Guy displayed onscreen. Also the lore was still in the background and spilled its spaghetti.
I can kind of get that, some people just want to sit back with an infinite ammo SSG and kill everything in front of them for a few hours.
I'd probably say the platforming. Not even the little platforming sections between arenas, I hated those but I can exempt them. The arena design being based around platforming.
I'll probably play it some more and see if that opinion sticks, but it just didn't feel the same to me. Maybe I just like standard progression based FPS. Well, I know I do because I've probably played almost all of them.
Yeah, as much as I love Doom 2016 I think it really benefited from the fact that most AAA story-driven FPS at the time were just total dogshit and it was a real breath of fresh air.
I went out of town to decompress a bit this weekend. I really need to get out of the city permanently at some point. So, for the most part I'll be just hanging out outside trying to get some fresh air and hopefully sunshine. Didn't bring a tablet or computer just my phone and I don't get attached to it as much. I did bring old Nintendo DS and some games in case I need something to kill time with no TV and sporadic internet. So I guess right now, Sonic Advance 3 and Tetris DS.
Just for a couple days though. At home I've been finishing up Castlevania: Lords of Shadow and an FPS game called Singularity for the most part. Although I bounce around a lot.
Have you considered hacking your DS? I have a Vita and the most fun I had was going doing just that, and I spent ages creating a custom theme (background images, took the music from somewhere else).
Plus it had the benefit of not using Sony's insane (unreliable) proprietary hardware.
Nintendo data mines way more information than any other manufacturer though.
I haven't but I'm not opposed to it. I looked a while back and I think on an old DS it doesn't offer a ton since it's still a pretty basic just game player.
What I'd really like is less of a hack and more just buying something, and that's one of the cartridge adapters that let me play GB Advance games from ROMs. DS plays them in hardware and not emulated so can only play from the actual slot. I don't mind collecting actual games, but they are just getting ridiculous in price now.
I love encountering fellow Vita players. There are, unfortunately, way too few of us. Sony really fucked up, and not enough people got to appreciate this insanely good console.
For a "dead" system, it has amazing community support; occasionally new fan translations come out.
I really need to learn Japanese, I know some Kanji, but haven't practiced it in more than half a year and it was pretty tenuous to begin with...still, better than nothing, and 1 day I hope to experience some hidden gems.
My knowledge is less than a kindergartener's, but it's <something>. I strongly suggest using a flashcard app like Anki and practicing periodically without any end goal.
Don't worry about applying it, just learn characters/bits. If I can fail myself to here, you have it in you too.
I wish I hadn't messed up < 1 year ago, I was in a good groove in terms of discipline. It might take me 5 years, but I think it's possible. Duendecat is another good practice tool, but I need to learn/relearn a lot of shit before I can tackle it and other options.
I played Singularity. It was pretty aright.
Even if you hadn't told me I would have said that exact same thing about Advance 3. The level design is atrocious. Otherwise there's nothing wrong with it, but well levels are really important part of the same.
I have not played any of the others. Prior to about this time last year, I had only played Sonic games for the most part on Game Gear as a kid (when it was still a thing). I started with some of the Genesis ones on emulators and I wouldn't say I fell in love but for a genre I don't really love it's a lot of fun. I just bought Sonic Advance 3 this week, saw it for cheap at local game store. I'll probably start looking for others. Been doing a lot of getting out of the city to camping cabins and such and DS is perfect for a form of entertainment that's small and totally disconnected, so it's been getting a lot of use rather than collecting dust.
Yeah, that's been a long, long time ago. I had to go look to see what they were and I know I had 1, 2, and Spinball. I think's that's it. I don't really remember enough to say what I thought except when I started playing some of the Genesis games in the last year or two I instantly got it for the most part. I'm not particularly good at any of them.
Highly likely I get more of them, and keep up playing some of the older (and newer ones). Particularly the portable ones. They aren't usually crazy expensive either.
My rotation at the moment:
Synthetik: It is an EXTREMELY well done roguelike shooter, with a little bit of progression between runs as you level up different classes. Classes have the abilities, and then you just have to drop to your knees and pray to the loot gods it gives you good gear.
Hades: Also an excellent roguelike, with a bit more control over your run as you can equip certain items to try and push the odds in your favor for items you want. I know that some have tried to claim its woke, but those people are lying. The game is well done, the characters are well done, and everything makes sense for what it was intended to be.
Men of War: Assault Squad 2/Call to Arms: Realistic themed RTS based on the same engine by the same dev (MOW is WW2, CTA is modern war). They are pretty fun if slightly difficult games, but they can be a great time once you get the hang of them.
Project Wingman: I am a HUGE Ace Combat fanboy, and this game is basically Ace Combat as made by Ace Combat fans with some of the little nagging elements of the game changed to make it better (for instance, you can mount different weapons on different hardpoints instead of having to have all of the same special weapon).
Need For Speed Heat: I havent played NFS in ages, and I have heard Heat does a pretty good job going back to its roots. Either way, I grabbed it on a sale so I am willing to give it a try.
And Finally, Cyberpunk 2077. I know its had its issues, and it has had moments of jank even on PC, but I think there are the bones of an excellent game here, and I cant wait to see what they come up with. After all, that is the story of Witcher 3 as well.
Flamenco intensifies
I knew I liked you.
Incidently, Zero is hands down my favorite Ace Combat, with 4 being a close second. I know everyone talks up how awesome 5 is, but I am less whoppy about it. Mostly because its FAR too in your face about its messaging compared to the other games, and it makes your squadmates annoying IMO.
Zero on the other hand pushes literally the same message, but does it in a far more organic way that results in me liking everyone in that game, even rival squadrons and my "buddy". Also, having a choice of special weapons gives it much more points in my book.
So...
Four: Best story, or at least the one I cared about the most. Literally, I have a Yellow Sqn patch. I like the 2D still shots with the narration and music over it; nothing to overcomplicate and more effort can be focused on storywriting, gameplay, and effects. Plus I like the idea that all the exploits of Mobius are seen through the eyes of the kid which makes all the impossible arcade shit appear more acceptable.
Zero: Best music hands down, and second best story with a cool partner and fun antagonist squadrons.
Five: Middle of the road. It was fun, and the most anime like storywise and I'm glad it basically kickstarted the Strangereal universe.
Six and Seven: Six had some really cool mechanics that I'm bummed didn't make it to seven, like airfield capture, having sub-missions within the main one, and of course the OP mass attack command. And the big dogfights were a lot of fun, especially attacking the flying carrier. Story was irritating. Seven has the best visuals so far but the story was...disjointed, it could have really been better.
Assault Horizon: It was fine. It did something different which I appreciate and I thought some of the heli stuff, the spooky mission, and the bombing run were enjoyable, but it tried too hard to be a CoD flight sim.
This is pretty much my take too, though like I said I flip Zero and 4. But it really is a photo-finish sort of difference, so its not like we disagree too much there (4 being just barely lower because it shows its age a bit more and its too short for my taste).
And good to see I am not the only one who thinks that AH is not that bad. I know its a meme in the community that it is the worst thing to ever be invented, but I have argued for a while that it is perfectly fine as a game.
My argument basically boils down to "Its a good dogfight game, but a bad Ace Combat game" and I firmly believe that if it didnt have the Ace Combat badge on it it would have been much better received.
Agreed on all count, just did an edit on the comment to expand on some stuff.
On that last note, have you ever played CoD Infinite Warfare? It has a suprisingly not terrible single player campaign and another game where if you removed the CoD branding, it would have sold better. Plus there's some flying missions that are not too bad either.
Unfortunately not. I kind of fell off the COD train ever since going to PC only (basically, everything I wanted to play I could either get on PC or at the very least emulate, so I didnt need my XBox anymore). But I did hear OK things about the campaign for it.
I've only tried Ace Combat 7, but it kept crashing near the start so I uninstalled it.
I'll check out Project Wingman, desperately want to try out this genre some day.
Still playing the original Deus Ex, just touched down at Area 51. I've been reading every document I can, it's definitely more topical than usual (which is to say, a lot).
Tetris. I figure since we’re about to head straight into communist bullshit, it’s probably a good idea to get good at their game of choice.
CK3, my Italians are massacring the saracens in the levant to restore Rome. Deus Vult!
Eh, I still prefer ck2 to 3.
CK3 is still a bare bones GSG. You can't compare them until it gets a few DLCs.
For me it's not the amount of content. It's that while CK3 does a lot of little things better, in its rush to reinvent itself and look modern the overall feel of the game is off.
It's the same thing with Civ 6 vs Civ 5.
Paradox is trying too hard for that mass appeal and sacrificing functionality. I came here to stare at sterile maps and spreadsheets dammit.
I mean I'm fine with some of the graphical changes to make it look pretty but only if it doesn't sacrifice functionality and game flow.
It's a creeping problem across their games, but I still enjoy it and look forward to the next couple DLC, whatever they will be.
Oh damn that's a shame. The UI and, well, everything in CK2 was great imho. No need to reinvent the wheel. Honestly I would've been just fine with them optimizing ck2 and just releasing more stuff for it.
Yeah. It's harder to get easier to navigate in CK2's UI with your seven tabs in the top left which cover every possible bit of information or decision you can possibly want.
In 3 it's not so easy. But it appeals to some people more than 2 (just like Civ 6 appeals to people more than Civ 5) but for me it's got to be 2 all the way.
Playing through Ghost of Tsushima again, Splatoon 2 is having one last splatfest this weekend, Project Wingman, playing GTA IV again and experimenting with some mods, and trying to get into EVE.
I'm running through a couple games right now. Path of Exile's new league just dropped, so playing with it a bit.
I also am playing through Etrian Odyssey 5... I've been replaying them from 3 onwards, This re-run I've beaten 3, 4, and Nexus, then once this one is done, I'll be doing 1 and 2's remakes.
I'm also playing a modded version of Shining Force 2 on a genesis emulator.
I'll play a brief bit of Dwarf Fortress if I'm multitasking, it's the ideal level of idle game for me: Not idle at all, but you can let it run if wanted.
And of course, some Sengoku Rance. Because Rance is not the hero we need, but he's the one we deserve.
Depends on the game. For nexus it was double imperial echocasting knights.
Imperials were nerfed in Nexus, yes, but class-split-skilling returns with a LOT more classes, which more than makes up for losing a bit of their raw power with some of their combinations. Their ultimate weapon is also available fairly early on compared to most classes in Nexus. With them, I ran a buffer-medic, a mixed debuffer, and a full-tank. Just the two damage dealers was sufficient: Imperials are BEASTS...
In 3... That's so many moons ago. But I do remember my going-through-the-game party, because it was an RP party. I had a Prince and a Princess (both Shogun subclass), a Wildling pet caretaker, a Zodiac/Arbalest chaperone, and a Buccanneer/Hoplite who captain'd our ship. The Royals shared healing duty while using Blitz Command to force the entire team to attack. I had to use some items to make up for not even subclassing into Monk, but items exist to be used. My area kill was the Wildling using the venomfly... If they could be poisoned. Otherwise, brute force.
I would level up using the Ship quest battles, and use encounter-down items in the mazes, so mana really wasn't an issue, as sufficient blitz commands takes down basically anything. These were royal siblings on a hired adventure experience, they weren't there to muck about in the mud with common encounters! (If I needed more money, I had a team of 5 high-level farmers).
How do you like other titles in the series? Love the game, but could never get into 1 or 2 of the others I tried.
I've played Rance 3 and Kikoku Rance, and thought both were okay, but inferior to Sengoku.
I finished Yakuza: Like a Dragon the other week. It was really good, and I loathe JRPGs. LAD is still a JRPG so it had many things that annoyed me (like having to grind for levels, slow combat, etc), but the Yakuza-ness made up for it. Don't know if I would play another Yakuza JRPG, but I really enjoyed it.
Now I've got nothing to play until the Yakuza Collection drops on the 28th. :(
Dead or Alive Venus Vacation hit me hard in early 2020. I never understood the appeal of gacha, but sexy weeb shit is right up my alley and DoA is the best. Eventually got over it and had a relapse when there was a collab between Azur Lane and DoA.
This describes me so hard... Terraria is still my #1 game played on Steam despite last touching it at least 2 years ago, though mostly because I'm bad at playing the games that I have. Great game!
Thanks for the heads up. I have way too many things on my plate right now, but I'll see if I can fit it in sometime later in the year. If not, I'll revisit it in 2022 -- barring death by COVID-20, 21, or 22.
Even when I stopped playing Terraria, I had a massive amount of in-game content that I hadn't gotten to yet. Not having to deal with doors anymore sounds neat.
Been getting my ass handed to me in Escape from Tarkov. I'm fairly new to the game and there's a fairly step learning curve but there's nothing as exciting as extracting from a raid with tons of loot. Also been playing Dungeon Warfare on the side. Pretty simple but well done tower defence with good music to boot.
Been trying to 100% (maybe 106% if I haven't killed myself by then) Crash 4 and slowly losing my sanity. The type of challenge that makes you feel actually incredibly good at gaming and then still calls you not good enough.
I've played most of the "mega difficult" type games and came out fine, but this one is head and shoulders above it. 20+ minute levels where a single mistake costs you the entire run, putting the hard part near the end coupled with the above, dozens of obscurely hidden boxes to memorize throughout the level, inconsistent hitboxes on some levels making complete mockery of you.
Its almost a perfect example of how a single thing (the perfect relics) can ruin an otherwise 10/10 game.
I was playing Kingdom Come Deliverance until earlier this week. I think I got a little bored with it and somewhat frustrated with being shit at the combat.
Now I'm looking at what else I have that I want to play. Little takes my fancy that I haven't already played so I was thinking of starting with the recent freebies from gog.
I've gained an interest in racing games and got myself a setup for that, now I'm mostly playing assetto corsa and F1.
I think they're starting off fairly conservative in terms of new communities, but if they start expanding then I'm definitely on-board with that, preferably with weebery.
That said, I doubt they'll ever allow NSFW content...we'll see, but "free speech" usually just means "(a little more) free speech".
Even if the owners are fine with it philosophically, they'd probably avoid it as an attack vector or would eventually just cave in to the registrars / DDOS service / other infrastructure provider inevitably threatening them (see Capitol Hill "violence").
It's less cucked, but it won't 'ever' be wholly free. Again, just my prediction. Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised one day; announce such a community here please if it ever comes to fruition.
Mostly I lurk on sites. I'm strictly treating WIN as 1 of my few posting places, but I still keep that qualifier in mind.
Been mostly rotating between FFXIV, Destiny 2, Hades, and Pokemon Shield. Hades is really fun and has a really good visual design on top of it. And I just like Rouge-lites in general. Pokemon Shield has been super frustrating, they found a way to make it easier than Sun/Moon and even more handholdy. Like, every other battle they throw heals at you, all the route designs are straight lines, the gym puzzles are braindead, exp gains are through the roof. It's just kinda frustrating as someone who's grown up with the brand see how much it's fallen. And the rumors of Sinnoh re-releases are worrying me, as Sinnoh's probably my favorite region and I don't want to see modern Gamefreak ruin it.
Swsh is so disappointing Zelda and mario got massive banger games pinnacles of their series and Pokémon gets a crappy last gen feeling game that has genuinely good ideas ruined by the crap. Like the gym challenges some of them could’ve been very cool like Milos but because the game has to be balanced for the brain dead it’s just walk in a straight line turn slightly one direction or another to avoid a battle.
I played the original Pokemon (Red) and 1 of the GBA games. I find modern design aesthetics to be really off-putting. Dodged a bullet by waiting for reviews on Shield, the franchise seems disappointing.
Everyone raves about Hades so I'm looking forward to it. I don't see any point in buying it anytime soon though, since I already have a massive backlog on multiple platforms....might as well wait for a major sale 1+ years from now.
If you like roguelikes, I assume you've already played Streets of Rogue; if not, strongly recommend it.
Currently cycling between Risk of Rain 2, Heroes of Hammerwatch, Door Kickers: Action Squad, and Nexomon Extinction.
Thinking of grabbing Monster Sanctuary if I can find a review I trust.
13 Sentinels was supposed to have a Vita release, but they cancelled it. Perhaps I shouldn't begrudge them intellectually, but I do. I don't want to pay Sony money...maybe I'll bite the bullet and order it 2nd hand for PS4.
I haven't seen any PC or Switch news unfortunately, and that would be very surprising in the 1st place considering it's Vanillaware. Games like Muramasa, or at least Odin Sphere and Dragon's Crown should be exposed to more platforms.
Just played Yaga cause it was supposed to be a Slavic "Life is pain and so should our games" but even on hardcore it was never difficult.
Still a decent game anyway
Been fucking with emulators mostly, I got Rpcs3 running so I can play Demons Souls at 60fps but I can’t get any Xbox emulators working for the life of me. I want to play Gemma Onisha, damn it!
As for new stuff I pretty much gave up on Cyberpunk, poor performance is the least of it’s issues. Baldur’s Gate 3 ea was pretty good, thinking about getting wasteland 3 but I never finished the second one so I don’t know if I should.
The re-release of Dragon Quest was pretty good, you can finally marry Jade so we have a true ending at last. Really looking forward to Nioh 2 ultimate edition, been playing some Stalker and Subnautica, that’s about it.
Did you have to tweak much for Demon's Souls? Lollipop Chainsaw didn't run well, but that was 1+ years ago and it might just be game-specific if it's still ongoing with newer versions (though there was at least 1 major rendering/performance update since then).
Yeah there were a couple shader related options Iand things I had to turn off for ds to run well, I think it’s all up on the wiki. With the 60fps and widescreen patches it runs great. There’s even a few mods for it on the nexus.
Thanks!
I've been trying to pick up Guilty Gear Xrd this week. It's kind of daunting given my deteriorating reaction time and terrible execution, but damn if it isn't just fun to play.
The citadel very fun retro shooter with a very solid core combat and good variety in weapons.
Action Taimanin. The well known series of raped ninjas, but this time it’s an all-ages Mobile action game.
Good qualifier. I had no idea there was anything but ninja sex (and NTR, let's not beat around the bush) for the series.
Rattan Man has assiduously translated a bunch of Lilith games. I still haven't played them yet. Started Annerose but need to finish it.
Hoping for a Christianity.win, so there can be somewhere that isn't beholden to the Rainbow Legion.
I don't think a day goes by where a frontpage post on /r/Christianity doesn't include someone paying lip service to sacred cows of the left.
I'm more than half way through Danganronpa 2 atm.
Not a new release but I'm still big on the Metro series, particularly the first two games.
And for newer things Blade and Sorcery is a damn fine game.
Made a new raid group for FFXIV so I've got a bunch of babby's first raid to look after for a bit. Besides that I've been making a 95% BT PCSX2 memory card for Star Ocean 3, only 4D left to do on that one.
Finished Yakuza Like a Dragon. It was an excellent RPG.
Still playing Hades. Amazing game.
Been playing more Dragonball FighterZ as well.
Waiting for Yakuza 3-5 collection coming later this month.
Out of curiosity I went back to try Dead by Daylight. It's improved but a lot of the old flaws are still there. Playing as a killer is still rough. Career survivor players still use the same tired old tricks and troll tactics, but it beats queuing as a survivor and hitting a 10m wait time.
FFXIV raiding two nights a week. We just started blind progging on E11S. Took about 2 weeks each to clear the first 2 fights this raid tier, not too bad given half the group is real casuals. Other than that I got Factorio for Christmas and its been eating all my free time in conjunction with Total Warhammer II. Just finished a Vampire Counts campaign, might try my first campaign on legendary difficulty now
