I grew up in Oklahoma and there was a lot of stuff named after Native Americans, so in the south it shouldn’t be surprising to have stuff named for confederate soldiers.
One of the few "concessions" the Yankees gave the South during Reconstruction was to allow statues of their soldiers. To honor their sacrifice and valor, so they haven't died in vain.
