Australia/NZ-specific subreddits, in particular, were always absolutely fucking awful (everything from city subs, to politics, to finance), but this is worse than even during ‘Rona…
For context, this week the Australian Tax Office (ATO) essentially declared war on small (but not big) business, and said that they will use every tool at their disposal to squeeze every unpaid tax dollar out of said businesses, no matter what consequences that has for insolvencies, the economy, and hell, everything that follows that.
I am not kidding when I say that they literally said “Well, if this destroys more businesses than the GFC, that’s too bad.”
In a normal world, such an announcement would have been treated with… At least some degree of disgust, but not on Reddit. On Reddit, people were literally saying they wished that the ATO could employ lynch mobs. In the AusFinance sub (the irony), they were saying they hope small business owners kill themselves over this, because they clearly deserve to…
It’s pretty crazy to me, to see how toxic this discourse has become.
That place is… Well, it’s probably worse than I ever expected it would become, honestly. And that’s just with me lurking, not even wading back in to discussions again…
Its been like that for a while ever since they started hiring mentally unwell admins who'd selectively enforce the websites rules against dissenters against lefty politics.
I was perma'd from r/movies because someone was asking why writers/producers not caring about the IP or source material is a -bad- thing. I mentioned DEI and one of the subreddit mods went full sperg mode perma'd me then dropped some comment about KiA being full of shits.
I usually just lurk or stick to KiA(2) because you can at least get some decent discussions there about topics i'm interested in. The bigger ones are all modded by basement dwellers who have nothing else in their lives to do.
I gave up on r/KIA2 when it became clear that the tranny topic is too locked down to really discuss anything.
My account was banned by admins because I criticized the trans movement. They never gave a reason for my suspensions, but all of them happened shortly after I criticized it and the disastrous effects it's having on society.
They went after me for calling out Spez's feminine penis addiction.
I got banned for posting the nashville manifesto. The admins love trannies too much
My account was suspended for posting "the age of women is over, the time of the women+ has come"
Hey! Same here. I made a comment on a post in a default sub about how I'm not a "transphobe," because I'm not scared of people with mental illness.
Knew the ban hammer was coming as I typed it. Totally worth it.
Ah, the secret rule. Good times! They kept banning anyone who called any tranny mentally ill (even for different reasons), but also anyone who explained that this was against the rules.
So comments were removed with the comment: "this violates the secret rule".
I can't lie, I burst out laughing now that I'm reminded of it.
That's probably what got you whacked. The spirit of their rules is "disappear anyone who blasphemes the Church of Girl Dick and don't tell them why". People were able to infer what the secret rule is, especially once this site got going.
I liked the response from people who were so pure and innocent that they were genuinely confused by it all.
What? You're just going to remove one of my comments and not tell me why, because the reason is a secret?
I think I may have said that to you at least once, on there, I won’t lie…
It was extremely annoying, lol.
Well, you weren't exactly wrong... it is very illogical and Orwellian.
I forget what post I made, but I was banned because I posted on The_Donald
I gave up on it when it became more interested in circlejerking about the same handful of shilled videos, and would pull the classic reddit move of "mass downvoting" you for daring to say maybe something that goes against their little echo chamber.
Even sites with "no politics" rules will allow political post if it's the right politics. I sub to mostly picture subs and you will find politics inserted. If you try countering those claims you get the ban.
Yup. I’ve had that too, with sports and other hobby subs… It’s gotten to the point where one major Australian sport, AFL, has a completely pozzed, politicized subreddit (which banned me for simply being subbed to LockdownSkepticism, lol), but then they also pozzed all the off-Reddit discussion boards, too, to remove that outlet for the rest of us.
Which leaves, like, Facebook..?
It’s fucked.
These people don’t want us to have anywhere on the internet to talk, where they don’t control the narrative/talking points…
I'm a Baltimore Ravens fan and the subreddit has become nothing but BLM and Lamar Jackson dick sucking.
That sounds obnoxious. Lamar is a loser.
Baltimore needs to bring in Nick Foles as their playoff QB.
I think Lamar is a good QB but the stanning is unbelievable. They bitch he only has two MVP awards, the same number as playoff wins.
I can't stand the Lamar fans who are crazy about him because he is black.
I was a big time poster/commenter on /r/MLS 2011-2015. Even was on the official podcast once. I feel like that sub succumbed earlier than most. Early 2016, I think.
Lol I got banned from there when someone posted a photo of some fruity “All fans welcome” tifo with the intention of starting a political circlejerk thread, and I responded by asking if “all fans” included people who felt that existing immigration laws should be enforced and government intervention should be minimized.
Hard being an MLS fan when 99.99% of the fan base is irredeemably cuckolded, but fuck it. I grew up playing the sport, and I’ve been following the league since 1996, so everyone else can eat shit. Congrats on being one of the 0.01%.
I gave up on being an MLS fan when my team's owner, Del Loy Hansen, made negative comments about kneeling during the anthem, and the league made him sell his team (RSL) because they were so butthurt about it. That was the end for me.
Yeah, the RSL sale and everything else that happened in the fallout of the 2020 clown world revolution has been hard to take. It’s somehow even worse now - not sure if you heard about this one, but last year a player got suspended for 6 games because he called the (white) ref a “dumb monkey” (apparently a fairly standard way of calling someone a dumbass in belgian, which was the player’s native language) and a black player in the general vicinity heard it and got all butthurt bc he thought it was directed at him.
It’s sad, because there was some pretty funny, edgy shit going on in fan culture during the early days of the league. Two classic signs I remember seeing in the crowd back in the old days - one, in New York, where they hated this opposing player named Mamadou Diallo who had broken the NY goalkeeper’s ribs on a really dirty play a while back, and where there had recently been an NYPD shooting of a guy named Amadou Diallo, read “They shot the wrong Diallo”, and then another, in DC, that read “DC is Jaime Town”, in reference to their star striker Jaime Moreno, and also Jesse Jackson’s comment about NYC being “hymie town”, in reference to the large Jewish population. I can’t even imagine the pearl clutching if those signs saw the light of day today.
It’s a lot like every other fandom. In the old days nobody cared about MLS, and there was weird, interesting, organic fan culture. Then the money and the normies came, and now anything that’s not palatable to soy cucks and 15 year old girls is strictly verboten.
It was a real shame, I met some really cool people through /r/MLS, and through the fandom in general. I lost track of most of them, unfortunately, and it really isn't what it used to be. You summed it up very well at the end of your comment.
Their politics are not politics, your politics are a hate crime.
It's not politics, it's human rights.
I tried pointing it out before, and it turns into you are the one bringing politics into it.
Be a conservative in any political sub? Banned. Go to a conservative sub and it's full of leftist mosquitos buzzing around, some with severe downvotes, and never a fear of being banned. And other posts that start with "radical leftist here." getting voted to the top.
SOmeone posted a gay wedding pic once, and I was like clearly you just posted that to see what people will say, so I'll bite. Told em what I thought. Then got banned.
They've been on this path since Chairman Pao's day, and the site has been unusable for well over 5 years outside of the saner subs. I gave up on even the saner subs in 2021, and I was late to the party.
I haven't known about any sane reddit subs since 2016. You can go talk about video games or whatever your hobby is. Sports is not my hobby, but you probably can't even talk about that because it's so wrapped up in politics now.
Any institution that isn't explicitly based will eventually become cucked.
Neutrality is a lie we tell children to keep them from becoming disillusioned about the world before they are ready for the truth.
Gay commies only feign neutrality until they feel comfortable enough to start imposing their will. They can't not do it, not attacking the enemies of the revolution however you can is the only sin in their "religion".
When I am weaker than you, I ask you for freedom because that is according to your principles. When I am stronger than you, I take away your freedom because that is according to my principles.
-- Frank Herbert
That quote is a perfect description of the left.
It's close enough. Though they don't act out of any principle. What characterizes them is the complete lack of any principle.
They act on principles even if they aren't able to articulate them.
The highest principle is "my whims are the apex value and anything that intervenes between me and the manifestation of those whims is 'evil'".
example: social expectations that I don't sleep with the hot guy from the gym because I am married are "evil"
The next one down is "the only 'good' that exists outside of satisfying my whims are the feelings I get when I attack and cause harm to 'evil'."
example: Growing a garden and using the harvest to suppport the less fortunate isn't a good. Protesting the 'evil capitalist' supermarket for 'price gouging' is a good. Supporting candidates who promise to 'crack down' on 'predatory retailers' is a good.
More like the whims of the TV.
I only read reddit when it's found as a search result. The site is 100% bots, trannies and NPCs. Accidentally stumbling onto the unlogged-in frontpage is vomit inducing - they live in a completely separate reality of their own creation.
Curious how much worse it'll get when they IPO.
Remember when they briefly lost control of the algo and the entire front page was T_D?
Reddit usually lies to advertisers claiming more human trafic than reality for all their subs except The Donald.
Imagine underselling ( lying ) your platform to advertisers because you'd rather suppress people for their politics.
In real life or online? I have only seen it online. david-me being the most notorious example.
A lot of responses are some variant of "ur dumb." Sometimes I just respond "no ur dumb." What are you gonna say?
Of at least two dozen times that Reddit appeared in a search result for me, only two of them were ever useful. The rest were either abandoned threads or filled with troll posts or "yours is a stupid question" posts.
I never posted there but I had already moved away from the site by the thirdish banwave. The bullshit included:
Manipulating r/all because of r/the_Donald and meme magic
Banning r/CringeAnarchy and r/fatpeoplehate for being too based.
Banning various pro-White subs, claiming they were promoting "white supremacy" (the beautiful white women subs and the fragile black sub, which was just a mirror to r/FragileWhiteRedditor, a racist sub which still exists)
Banning r/theredpill and leaving a notice instructing visitors to seek psychiatric help from a group that doesn't actually respect men
And this was before mods nuking entire threads on verboten subjects had become commonplace, and before r/the_Donald was taken out. The place was already too insane for me to tolerate by late 2019 and COVID combined with the opening of communities.win created an out. I explored some other reddit alts but .win was the only decent one.
Reddit will be 100% bots and astroturf eventually, don't look back.
Damn I miss cringeanarchy.
That's when i left reddit.
No offense but this place doesn't even reach that level of fun.
I'm getting old aren't i
Cringeanarchy was the shit. That was when I left too.
I feel like I'm getting old too -_-
I've been trying to keep some of the subs alive:
/c/fatpeoplehate
/c/smuggies
/c/churchofcurrentthing
The problem is that everyone here mostly agrees with each other and there isn't really much of a reason to create very specific niche topics when those posts are appreciated everywhere.
I subbed to fatpeoplehate but there's not a lot of content yet
Cringeanarchy was great. Cringeanarchy will never die.
This will make it sound like I'm defending the admins, but rest assured that this is definitely not the case.
FPH was modded by trolls. They baited a ban and when they got it, they said they were happy because it resulted in lulz. You have to at least pretend that you respect the admins and their edicts, as hard as it is. This had negative consequences beyond FPH, because it's a ratchet which gets worse every time there is a ban wave.
It likely would have gotten banned at some time. But any delay would have been an improvement, because it would have saved some measure of free speech for just a little while longer.
I wasn't entirely aware of the inner workings of each sub, but I just remember that they were part of the earliest banwaves. I assumed it was because of Reddit admins promoting body positivity and didn't know about the snarky mods. Things were extreme enough at the time that I could easily believe the ban was natural.
My recollection is that they weren't part of a ban wave. It is not exactly inner workings. They were banned after they were doing things the admins told them explicitly not to do. Now, you can argue whether that is good or bad if they are taking a stand on principle.
But if they're just getting their sub banned "for the lulz", as they were (or at least argued retrospectively), I think that is a very bad reason.
Obviously, and sub like FPH is going to have a target on its back. But you can make it difficult or hard for them. They made it very easy.
it's simply because all the sane people left.
I got banned for calling a jannie a retard so when I go to browse the path of exile or printsf (and even that's full of shitlibs, the Starship trooper is fascist kind) subs I get the standard front page.
Wall to wall commie liberalism, enviro nuts, antowork/cars, Ukraine bullshit or whining about Trump. The biggest echo Chamber on the Internet, except for maybe twatter.
Ps. The best part of it all. They'll perma any sub that's right of Stalin and Mao but there's a sub dedicated to helping sex offenders find jobs. Literal convicted pedophiles are fine for the jannies.
That's not strange at all. They hate political oppositions. They don't hate pedophiles and rapists.
if you own anything (either a house or a business) you are hated by reddit
Being an entrepreneur is practically an unforgiveable sin to them. Doesn't matter if you treat your employees with respect or donate to the local shelter.
Well yeah, they spent the better part of the decade banning anyone with right-wing views who stray away from the controlled opposition subs, they filled the admin and moderator positions of the bigger subs with mentally ill degenerates, who in turn banned even more people who disagreed with them on anything. So all that's left are the freaks and toadies.
oh man, you should of been there for the few years before "the last couple of years" when all this bullshit started.
It's all bots and trannies, what do you expect?
Just like a human body's immune system has to constantly fight off infections or it dies, the people who run websites have to constantly stop leftism from taking root.
Best summary of reddit I've seen.
parasites and looters.
Ausfinance and the like have been bastions of the braindead for years
You, me and the handful of Aussies on this site I reckon swing between disgust and "just can't help but laugh" at train wreck this country is heading towards
Everything is pozzed, zogged, and whatever else you can think of under the sun. I can't make jokes about faggots or niggers or abos that are completely dry humour but people are allowed to treat the "uninjected" with utter hatred and spite?
People can talk about everything in the lens of Left-Right politics but when I say that it's all bullshit I get crucified? "Nooo it's only liberal vs labour. My side is correct. You are just a stupid, bigoted old-fashioned cooker"
Laugh at people trying to dodge the ATO grift but complain about the cost of living and less opportunities in work, buying a home? Complete retards.
Every day on news.com.au or 7news, 9news, ABC news, SBS news and on all radio stations just either braindead or when they do talk about good things they are years behind. I listened to RN yesterday about how Australians "should" start to get used to end end of the middle class and think of intergenerational wealth.... When the writing's been on the wall for over 20 years and so obvious as recently as 2018-2019
This CUNTry is all about dumbing people down (surprising given how dumbed down most of the population is already) and normalising an idiocracy-style slave colony, where the retarded slobs will mobolise on you for calling out all the bullshit
