For those who didn’t know, the escapist forums were one of two places (can’t recall the other one) that allowed discussion of Zoe Quinn and Gamergate after the big crackdown. The site was run by Alexander Macris at the time. Sort of an interesting dude.

I spent a lot of time on that forum but was eventually excised in one of their inevitable purges of right wingers. From there, we went to KIA1, then KIA2, then here - from niche site to confinement board to internet ghetto.

I would have said the moment it died was when that guy from RedLetterMedia who is also with The Escapist started spouting lefty drivel on their game streams. But I'm kind of an oldfag who hasn't followed them in over a decade, when The Escapist was an "alternative" ezine.

Escapist owns Zero Punctuation

Oof.

Who have both been appearing less often on the channel.

Almost like lefties ruin everything.

Amusingly, I just briefly confused his appearance with the gay dean from Community. Rather appropriate I guess, lmao.

I was heavily on escapist forums pre-gg and actually ran their unofficial minecraft server for a while back in when minecraft was in beta. And, funny enough, got booted from my position by a tranny crybullying against me.

Back in those olden days it was mostly anita-style feminism that was the current thing and boy was it better than what we have it now.

Yahtzee hasn't quite gone full NPC but he has to slide in a couple of jabs wrapped in gay commie talking points in almost every one of his newer vids. His original dev diary was what first motivated me to get into game development and his more recent versions of that series are really insightful for anyone who wants to try their hand at hobby dev.

I mean it's the transition phase from exclusivity to artisinal that every industry that has technology revolution goes through.

There IS a place for gaming websites but it's NOT what they used to be, the old ways die. They're not useful as gatekeepers and filters like they used to be when it was hard to disseminate information.

If uou couldn't watch a game play video the next best thing was a trusted outlet 2atching it and then publishing an article. Now that distance between developer and consumer has shrunk and that role no longer exists.

There is place for a taste maker, trusted curator, artisanal reviewer. And the people that do that are successful still. But it's a fundamentally different structure than these old sites

Basically the niche that youtube reviewers fill now. People who put their own personality into their content as much as they do the games. You're following them for their opinions and entertaining presentation as much as the gaming content. You may not always agree with their opinions, but even in that you learn enough about their tastes over time that you have an idea whether you would like the games or not.

Correct, and it wouldn't be difficult to build a stable of a couple people with overlapping taste that diverges in specific, known ways to have a variety of content, including point and counterpoint stuff.

There you go, you have a gaming site again.

Hell there's webcomics with more active forums than most gaming sites. Its not hard to have a niche community exist if you aren't actively trying to murder it in the cradle.

Crap, this might go the way Machinima did and end up with a wide scale deletion (except Zero Punctuation since he owns that) hopefully archivers have learnt from that and work fast to download as much as possible.

Lost a lot of good mailbox content when Machinima went suddenly.

Inb4 "Slightly Punctuated" where everything is shouted thereby requiring the use of exclamation points.

Good fucking riddance (to the forum regulars). Bunch of senile circle jerking armchair "expert" libtards. There was maybe one regular poster on there who wasn't a total idiot or a total hypocrite.

I still read Ars basically only for their space/rocketry coverage. I get the distinct impression that their audience has shifted to Bay Area tech workers.
