It's also that, as they do it, they have managed to convince themselves - and tons of others via their indoctrination machine - that they are somehow the righteous/virtuous ones, even when everyone can see the results of their policies with their own eyes.

I think it's partly how detached we are from the struggle of life. Nothing seems like a real threat so social validation is all that matters. This nonsense mainly seems to get big in comfortable societies, and among the demos that are more likely to at least be middle class.
