"This woman is not ugly enough! Too much cleavage! Too much eye candy in the face! Think of the female players! We must protect their fragile sensibilities! And that's why we need gender quotas in game developing!"

Uglies hate pretties. Losers hate winners.

One either grows up from it and accept their humble lot in life or remain resentful until the coffin.

It’s just rent-seeking. They will have something negative to say about any game unless they are literally working on it. The only way to silence a leftist’s criticism is to hire them. This is by design.

Who are the experts of video games? The people being paid to begrudgingly trudge through one a week, or the people who clock 100+ hours a week in games, who all their social circles are in games, that mod their games, and are always both seeking the new best thing while respecting the old classics?

Video game journos as video game experts are like anorexics as buffet experts. They hate the thing they're reporting on, and would have nothing to do with it if at all possible.

TBH, I can't recall how bad PCMag was as far as being a propaganda outlet and uncritical corporate bootlicker. Is it possible this is a bad thing?

He says things like "it's killing our ability to regularly have the intelligent and meaningful conversations that help games and players grow" and also things like "fanboy misinformation" and also "muh capitalism bad' and he calls his own opinions "expert criticism" . He's woke

The second part, of course, is that game journalists did this to themselves. What do you suppose the distribution of actual gamers to activists is? How many articles have we seen that are just people attempting to limply apply critical theory to games? Game journalists developed an extremely distorted view of their worth, and they decided that they could use the platform to bully developers, players, and basically anyone who didn't toe the line. Now they're being replaced by YouTubers and individuals who actually like games. Good riddance, nature is healing.

From the comment section. Spot on. The industry dove deep into the excesses of critical activism which is actually incredibly unpopular among your average Joes despite being the going thing among academics and self-described “sophisticated” people. When their product became incredibly unpopular as a result, the activist-journalists retroactively claim they were just doing normal journalism, and since they’re so deep in the critical activist cult, some of them might even really believe that, while others are more cynical and know that’s a lie. But people whose money is actually on the line in relation to the product weren’t going to hemorrhage money forever, and I’m sure the activist-journalists will blame them for not being awake to the value of activist journalism, even as they claim elsewhere to have only been doing standard informative journalism. What a mess.

Classic motte and bailey.

We honestly need real journalism now more than ever, given the state of information control and media manipulation. But I can count the number of real journalists on maybe one hand, and one of those fingers is literally imprisoned by the global cabal.

I trust an aggregate user rating system more than any single “expert”.

And I trust my own opinion more. I can get more out of watching a YouTube video of a game I’m interested in than any expert shilling for their payday.

I'd be wary of any aggregate as it's been shown they're willing to manipulate those. You've no doubt heard about how "The Woman Kang" was revisionist history bullshit, but it also proved rotten tomatoes manipulates their user scores. I can't think of any other way for trash like that to get a 99% audience approval.

Without a doubt. I don’t trust movie aggregators like RT, though occasionally they do slip up and forget to “make corrections”

In terms of games, most indie games won’t be influenced by this because they aren’t big enough to be worth the effort.

Still, I’ll go watch a let’s play video to get a better idea for gameplay and quality. “Experts” are relics of the past.

It's the angling and added caveat that makes this otherwise correct statement completely wrong. Everyone suffers without criticism, yes. No need for "experts" (which aren't experts), and jornolists have shat in their own bed with corruption and bias for too long not to expect backlash. "Let them eat cakes".

The left’s obsession with credentialism coincided precisely with their capture of virtually every institution involved in issuing credentials. When our institutions were more traditional/conservative, the “experts” were to be ignored because they were “the man” and “patriarchy”.

Mate, I'm going to be direct here and it's not (at least solely) to dunk on game journos: Most of you are not experts. And I only use most because I'm sure there are a tiny fucking handful of independents out there that have some handle of what they're talking about, but they're few and fucking far between.

And this shit gets shown time and again. From Dean Takahashi and his infamous Cuphead bullshit, to Polygon with Doom 2016, to just recently with IGN playing Redfall, game journalists have a prolonged history of being absolutely inept when it comes to gameplay.

You're not experts. And the funny thing is that nobody expects everyone to be experts at gaming. Yeah, yeah, git gud and all that other meme-y shit, but you're not even fucking proficient half the time. "Expert" is not a word I would EVER describe a game journalist as.

Maybe you should have made yourself have a bit more skill and rep and you wouldn't have gone the way of the fucking dodo if you didn't have some sort of industry connection to get exclusive bullshit from. Maybe if you weren't the most abrasive and egotistical subhumans on the planet, general audiences might want to still give you some attention.

But that would require being principled human beings and not consumerist shills hoping they get some cushy publisher job they can leech off of.

Here’s the thing: the crossover between woke game journos and skilled gamers appears to be literally nonexistent. Like if the game journos had a single “champion” who could produce video footage of proficient gameplay, then the entire game journo industry might have a leg to stand on. But based on what we’ve been shown, that champion doesn’t exist.

I'll just torrent a game to see if it is good since a reviewers personal opinion may not match mine, even thought the game might still be good it may just not be for me.
