They drove up this driveway for a very short time, realized their mistake and were leaving, when Mr. Monahan came out and fired two shots," Monahan "refused to exit his residence to speak with police." & the cops had to call the SWAT team. Missouri law allows for deadly force if there is an apparent attempt to open the home via an intruder, it doesn't even have to be a proven attempt. The homeowner just has to think that someone was attempting to get in. There is no requirement of actually crossing the threshold either.

I think shooting through the door makes sense in several cases. Including if someone on the other side is screaming "I'll kill you", or if it looks like they are trying to break down the door, and if you are a physically vulnerable person like a pregnant woman, disabled person, or fragile old man.
When you're that old, there's a real good chance that a physical confrontation with a 50 year old could kill you, let alone a 16 year old.
Or if its a glass storm door.

In reality, the white militants were already riotous thanks to journalism, and it was an exchange of gunfire that killed both police, black militants, and white militants.
There was no "black mob" at the court house, because there were a few dozen black militants that were trying to evacuate the man the police were trying to release because the alleged victim refused to press charges. Those black militants were at the courthouse because they assumed that the black suspect would be executed by the white lynch mob that had already formed, was in the thousands, and was demanding an execution of an innocent man. It wasn't a mob, because they were within the law to help get an innocent man to safety. Whatever "protest" may have initially been intended after being spurred on by insane and psychotic newspaper men who demanded terrorism and lynchings as the appropriate response to the made-up accusations in their head, was lost as those protesters brought weapons and threatened to kill the police if they didn't turn the suspect over immediately, without trial, and without charge. That makes that 'protest' a mob. The white mob was also under an insane impression that the Federal government had, some how, ordered the Tulsa police to free the suspect and/or endorse a violent purging of all white citizens in Tulsa... which is far removed from any aspect of reality.
After that, all sides retreated. The police to the court house, the white militants to the white neighborhood, and the black militants to the black neighborhood.

Including declaring that the federal government was attempting to purge all of Tulsa, and all surrounding communities of whites in a violent genocide. The insanity of the claim of a federal & black invasion was so hysterical that during the riot, they fired on a train car filled with innocent travelers who didn't know there was a riot; because the militants assumed that the train was filled with National Guardsmen.

At around 3am, I had an average-sized 20-something white guy start trying to break in the front door of my apartment, shouting a mix of "Let me in!" and "I'm going to kill you when I get in!"
I got my gun out of my bedside safe, chambered a round, and found my phone and called the cops. I talked to the dispatcher. I put it on speaker, and had the dispatcher confirm she could hear the threats to my life and the pounding on the door. I informed the man on the other side that he was at the wrong fucking apartment and if he managed to make it inside, it would be his last mistake (with the dispatcher off speaker and on mute). He got tired before he made it through the deadbolt, and left. At 7am when the police showed up to take my report, I showed them the cracks in the wood from him throwing his weight against the door, made my statement, and that was the last I ever heard of it.
3am, "I'm gonna kill you when I get in there motherfucker!" and it took over 20 minutes for him to give up and go away, and not a cop in sight, with dispatch listening to the threats the whole time.
I assume he was drunk, believed he was outside a friend's apartment, and they were fucking with him by locking him out, and it was bluster, but I had no way to be sure. I was glad I didn't have to defend myself. I didn't get any more sleep that night, and to this day I'm not sure whether I would've been able to make a call and react in time if he had been armed and serious.

I walked up an extra flight of stairs by mistake, and spent what felt like 10 minutes trying to get my key to work in the lock. It wasn't until I dropped my keys and bent down to pick them up that I realized I didn't have a welcome mat and was at the wrong apartment. I wasn't loud, wasn't making threats, but I was trying to get in to somebody else's apartment after last call.
I'm quite glad I didn't get myself shot. If somehow I had, and had survived it, I think I would've been a witness for the defense, not the prosecution. I shouldn't have been there, and I shouldn't have been drunk enough I wasn't paying attention to the numbers by the door. On the upside, dwelling on this low moment helped me reign in my habit of occasionally seeking oblivion. A lot of people have found rock bottom in much worse ways.
The old man probably should have waited until the door was forced open, because evidence of forced entry would work in his favor in a court of law, if not a court of public opinion.
We don't get the benefit of hindsight in the moment, though. If you're going to be armed, and I recommend it, spend some time thinking through what you're going to do and what you need to do to protect yourself, not just in the moment, but after.
I don't typically care whether he was up to no good or not. You go to the wrong house and you find a locked door, the answer is never to start shaking the door handle to get in. Back away, re-assess.
I've gone onto other people's property when I know I'm not an invited guest. Normally I'm turning around in someone's driveway by backing back into the street on the edge of their property. However, if I'm trying to get their attention, I keep my fucking hands in the air and call out to them. I stand back from doors and I make myself clearly visible.
Regardless of the law, you can't know how the other person will respond, so stepping onto another person's property is extremely risky.
I've had people (of a specific demographic...) come to my apartment door (after getting through the front door), knock on the door and say "Hey it's me, lemme in" as if I wouldn't look through the peephole first.
It was more than likely an unfortunate accident in that he thought the kid was trying to force the door open and the dumb kid was trying to get into the wrong house in the worst possible way.

At 10pm at night, anyone near my door is suspicious on principle. Trespassing is a crime, though a minor one, and doing so in a suspicious manner is absolutely grounds for being treated as a threat from step zero.
This is operating on that hindsight that he is alone and you are capable of juggling the phone call, arming yourself, being prepared to unload it, and watching him perfectly all at the same time. And during that being absolutely certain based on no evidence that he is completely alone and they aren't breaking in multiple avenues while you "wait."

From everything I've read, it's perfectly legal to knock on a door or ring a doorbell and it's not considered trespassing. Some exclusions may apply if you have a "No Trespassing" sign, a "No Soliciting" sign (and you're soliciting), if you have gates/fence that the person must open to reach your door, or if the person's intention was to harass.
I don't want to get into a long-winded debate, so I'm ending it here. If you think it's about avoiding debate, I'll just say that I'm wrong and you're right.
With that said, for anyone reading, don't risk going to jail by shooting/killing someone who knocked on your door or rang your doorbell to get your attention and notify you of their presence. There's not a law against it and there's no judge/jury who's going to see it your way, either.
